Albatros under the looking glass
Herr Prop-Wasche replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Personally, I get a better experience if I reduce the chances of hitting the aileron cables when a round goes into the hit box from 100% to 90%. You can do this by editing the .xdp file for each plane. OR, you can download my DM! -
A little program I am working on...
Herr Prop-Wasche replied to Herr Prop-Wasche's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
That's my main goal of the program: to avoid forcing the user to find all of the important files in all of the directories. Additionally, some files have identical names but contain different contents: for example, there are three different copies of both ViewUI.xml and UnlimitedPilots.xml. And, only one of them is effected by player changes to his setup! The trouble is figuring out which one! Better to just make copies of all of them. I have also found another file which should be backed up: ConfigOverrides.xml holds the graphic settings you choose when you press the Graphics button inside Workshop. If this file is saved and copied into your re-install of OFF, you don't have to set up your graphic overrides again! You can also use this file to avoid re-configuring all of your graphics settings when you install a new video card or driver. -

Is that the folder where OFF is installed by Vista? You should also have some OFF files somewhere in your Documents folder. Can you post that directory structure, too? That would be very helpful. -

Frack, I forgot Vista! How does OFF get stored in C: on a Vista machine? That may require three programs! Someone needs to tell Microshat to settle on ONE way to store documents and stick with it instead of changing it with every new OS! -

A little program I am working on...
Herr Prop-Wasche replied to Herr Prop-Wasche's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
@UncleAl: Not sure exactly what you are saying, but the program is not intended to be used for nefarious purposes--just to give players a way to back up a few critical game files in case OFF goes toes up. @Olham: I am unaware of Acronis Backup. Is that freeware or payware? Another problem I now see is that different operating systems have different paths in their C: drive. For instance, my XP setup stores OFF in the C:\Documents and Settings\ComputerName\Application Data\Microsoft\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields Folder, while Olham's Win 7 stores OFF files in the C:\Computer Name\Application Data\Roaming\Microsoft\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields folder. Thus, it looks like I will have to prepare separate programs to work in XP and Win 7. I also need to know if anyone else who has Win 7 has a different directory arrangement than Olham's. Also, is it different for 32 vs. 64 bit Win 7? Don't forget ViewUI.xml which stores your HUD gauges and HUD color settings. It is found in several locations: the C: drive location, the main CFSWW1 OFF folder, and two sub-folders. Mine.xca and CFS3.xca are also located in the C: drive. Those files store your joystick settings and button assignments and should also be backed up. Okay, so unlimitedpilots also needs to be saved. Any other files? -
Quick scenario - camels and DR-1's
Herr Prop-Wasche replied to tdacon's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I have found that if you press Pause after the black and white screen with MvR and other pilots show up but before the game screen loads, the game will pause immediately. While paused this way, look around and see who or what may be shooting or crashing into you. Note: sometimes you have to press Pause twice quickly in succession after the game screen shows so all of the graphics are loaded. Then you can look around and see what may be lurking about! -
EXTRA! EXTRA! BREAKING NEWS! News Mod Released (AP) (Reuters) In celebration of the release of Hat In the Ring, HPW is pleased to announce the release of an updated, expanded, revised, and corrected set of news reports for the years 1915 to 1918. These reports are based upon the "stock" news reports that already come with BHaH. However, all of the reports have been substantially revised, with numerous spelling, punctuation, and grammar errors fixed. In addition to these substantial cosmetic changes, many reports have been updated with more facts and additional content. Finally, a number of "new" news reports have been added, each containing additional historical information about the daily events of WWI. The result is a more interesting, more informative, and more easily read set of news reports, IMHO. Acknowledgments: I would first like to thank OBD, on whose original reports this mod is substantially based. Thanks also goes out to RAF_Louvert, who graciously allowed me to reproduce his "A Story for the Season" in the news reports for December of 1916. Also, thanks to Stiffy, for scanning and posting articles from "The War Illustrated," a few of which I also utilized in creating this mod. Finally, a big shout-out to Creaghorn, for giving me the inspiration to start working on this mod. Thanks guys! Installation: Simply download the attached files below and copy into your OBDSoftware\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields\campaigns\CampaignData\News folder. Be sure to back up the original News19**.txt files first! IMPORTANT: These news reports are incompatible with Creaghorn's German language news report mod. If you install this mod, you will replace Creaghorn's news reports with mine and be no longer able to read his in the game. Be sure to rename his news report text files before installing my mod if you wish to use his in the future. Enjoy!

News From the Great War
Herr Prop-Wasche replied to Herr Prop-Wasche's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
NEWS BULLETIN!! Updated News Files Available! I have just now finished revising and updating the news reports files for the years 1917 and 1918. A couple of minor mistakes were corrected, along with the addition of some new content. Files for the years 1915 and 1916 will be released next. Installation: Simply download the two attached files below and copy them into your OBDSoftware\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields\campaigns\CampaignData\News folder. Backup your existing News19**.txt files by renaming them to something like "stockNews191*.txt" and then delete the word "English" from the front of the filename you have just downloaded. If you wish to go back to the original files, simply add the word "English" back onto the downloaded filename and remove the word "stock" from the old filename. You can use Creaghorn's news mod for German campaigns and mine for non-German campaigns by following the same basic set of instructions. -
Damage Model Discussion--HPW Campaign DM released!
Herr Prop-Wasche posted a topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I am curious about other users opinion's about the current damage model in 1.46, so I have set up a poll. Overall, I think the DM in BHaH/HITR is very good, especially considering the limitations of the CFS3 engine--the OBD team members aren't miracle workers, after all, even if we sometimes think they may be! However, there are at least two areas which I feel could use a little improvement. However, before I discuss these two areas, please take a minute to vote in the above poll. . . . . . . Now that you are back, my first impression is that entire wing structures are too easily separated from the rest of the air frame by streams of bullets. Too frequently, an enemy plane will be flying along and getting shot, without much apparent damage or effect on maneuverability, when suddenly the whole wing blows off at the root. This strikes me as unrealistic. More likely, bullets would put holes into and rip fabric, but not destroy the entire wing structure. I suppose wings did come off in real life, but more likely from over-stressing a heavily bullet-ridden wing in a dive, not in level flight. N.B. I think the wing-tips are okay, it's mainly the wing-root that bothers me here. Others opinions may differ, however. The second area I would like to improve is engine damage. Several people have noticed that if you pump enough bullets into a quicker adversary such as an Se5a, they will slow down until you can get in close enough and finish them off. In general, this probably did happen in real life. However, I think the effect is a little too pronounced too early in combat. In other words, I don't believe that relatively 'minor' engine damage should cause such a disproportionate loss in speed as we seem to have now. Another current effect of 'minor' engine damage is loss of power, which causes the damaged airplane to go into 'glide' mode because the aircraft can no longer maintain altitude. Again, this effect is fine in a heavily damaged engine, but a relatively undamaged engine should be able to at least maintain altitude. Strengthening both the wing roots and the engine slightly, I believe, will improve dogfights by making both the player's and the AI's craft somewhat less resistant to sudden wing loss or sudden loss of engine power--at least early in a dogfight. This should result in both somewhat longer and more interesting dogfights, as a damaged opponent, while weaker, will still be capable of maneuver and even possible counter-attack. If enough people express an interest, I will most likely go ahead and release an update to my DM. Fixing the wing and engine problems shouldn't take very long. If enough people can agree about any other problems with the DM, I will consider doing something about them in a later patch. I look forward to your responses. -
Damage Model Discussion--HPW Campaign DM released!

Better late than never! Be kind, Unc. I am but a one man operation. Seriously, a lot more testing went into this version than the last, so it took a bit more time. I'll try to be more punctual next time. -

Damage Model Discussion--HPW Campaign DM released!
Herr Prop-Wasche replied to Herr Prop-Wasche's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I don't think you need to delete your .bdp files as long as you make sure to completely exit and restart OFF after installing the mod. To check, install the mod and fly one mission. Then, go into the aircraft folder and open any of the aircraft files. As long as the time stamp on the .bdp file is later than the time stamp on the .xdp file you should be good to go. If not, let me know and I will post a .bat file to take care of any pesky, left-over bdp's. -

Full Campaign Damage Model for OFF BHaH HITR v1.0 by Herr Prop Wasche Zip file contents: aircraft folder with 477 individual aircraft folders and .xdp files HITR_Backup_XDPs.bat Restore_HITRXDPs.bat HPW_HITR_CampaignDM_1.0_ReadMe.txt INSTALLATION: Important! Backup your HITR .xdp files first! Backup your HITR .xdp files by first copying the HITR_Backup_XDPs.bat file to your OBDSoftware\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields folder and then clicking on it to run the program. After you have backed up your .xdp files, extract the entire contents of the HPW_HITR_CampaignDM_1.0.zip file to the OBDSoftware\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields folder. DO NOT unzip the file into the aircraft folder itself! If prompted, simply click "Yes to all" when asked if you wish to replace files. If at any time you wish to return to the stock HITR damage model, simply click the Restore_HITRXDPs.bat file included in the zip file and automatically placed in your OBDSoftware\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields folder. In order to re-apply the mod, simply re-open the HPW_HITR_CampaignDM_1.0.zip file and extract the aircraft folder to the OBDSoftware\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields folder. NOTE: This mod is intended to be used in BOTH QC battles and the main campaign. ------------ Thank you for downloading version 1.0 of my Full Campaign damage model for Hat in the Ring, the official extension to Between Heaven and Hell, the already wonderful WWI flight sim modification of CFS3 by OBD Software. In addition to including .xdp files for all of the aircraft in the HITR campaign, this new version of the mod includes many additional tweaks (based on play-testing) made to the .xdp files since the release of the QC version. In particular, hit point values for many of the engines have been adjusted, along with wing root values for several planes, including but not limited to, all versions of Albatross, Nieuports, Spads, and many two-seaters. Minor corrections to the .xdp files for the Bristol Scout, DFW CV, Nieuport 24, and Nieuport 28 have also been included with this mod. Overall, my intention with this damage model is two-fold: to slightly toughen up most of the airplane models in the game in order to slightly prolong dog-fights and to provide the human player with more visible signs of damage so he or she may choose to make their escape and live (hopefully) to fight another day! Depending upon the aircraft and the severity of the damage, aircraft should now be more likely to display not only bullet holes, but also rips and tears, oil and coolant leaks, exposed wing spars, and broken wing tips. Although entire wings may still break off at the root, the mod is intended to slightly reduce the frequency of this event. While all of the aircraft engines in the game have also been made slightly more resistant to early damage, when severely damaged they are somewhat more likely to catch on fire and even explode! Oil and coolant leaks should also be more likely to occur. Finally, both your pilot and your AI opponent are slightly more vulnerable to becoming wounded--perhaps even fatally! I would again like to express my thanks and appreciation to OBD Software for their help and encouragement in the making of this damage mod. Of course, with the exception of the tweaks contained in this damage model, all work remains the sole work and property of OBD software. If you have any questions or experience any problems with the installation of this mod, you can reach me at www.combatace.com at the Over Flanders Field forum. Thank you and I hope you enjoy the mod! -

What was your Fun Car?
Herr Prop-Wasche replied to Duce Lewis's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
When my Dad turned 40 he had a bit of a mid-life crisis and bought a '68 Mustang hard top. The car was a piece of junk, but boy, 380 some horses was the schit! Unfortunately, he SOLD it not long after I got my driver's license. Coincidence? Not likely! -
Quick Combat: Turkey Shoot, Dogfight
Herr Prop-Wasche replied to Toadvine's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Funny, I was just trying Turkey shoot today for the first time. The only difference is that you start out behind and much closer to the enemy < 400 ft., and approximately at a 45 degree angle off his tail. -
ALARM! ALL NVIDIA GRAPHICS CARD USERS!
Herr Prop-Wasche posted a topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
If you have an nVidia graphics card, DO NOT install the 196.75 driver update! Some users of other games have reported that the new drivers have a glitch which disables the graphics card fan, causing some cards to overheat and die! nVidia has withdrawn the latest drivers from their website. Here is their announcement: I have an EVGA card, and they recommend going back to the 196.21 drivers which you can obtain from nVidia's website. To enable overclocking, also download the latest update to EVGA's Precision O/C utility (v1.9.1). -
Unique skin for each plane?
Herr Prop-Wasche replied to trebby's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
If you look in the aircraft.cfg file for whatever plane you are concerned with, I think you will find some settings for FF. For example, for the Alb DIII, there is a section labeled [forcefeedback]. You could try raising the setting for "stick_shaker_magnitude" from 5000 to 10000 to see what happens. However, I don't have FF and I have never attempted to tinker with those settings. If you decide to do so, make sure you back up the .cfg file first! -
Ditto, what Olham said. Hellshade kindly sent me a Trackir4 which I then used with the 5 software with no problems.

Damage Model Discussion--HPW Campaign DM released!
Herr Prop-Wasche replied to Herr Prop-Wasche's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Thanks for the reports. Hmmm, not sure if I like the tail down crashes. Any idea what might be causing that? My guess is that every bullet that goes into the engine results in a small loss of engine power and therefore, torque. Eventually, the engine does not have enough power to sustain lift. OTOH, shouldn't the aircraft go into a spin instead of falling tail first?? Has anyone else noticed if two-seaters tend to spin or not when damaged? Perhaps a compromise had to be made in the FM of two-seaters between stability vs. spin characteristics? Also, your pics are not showing up on my computer. -

Damage Model Discussion--HPW Campaign DM released!
Herr Prop-Wasche replied to Herr Prop-Wasche's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I know nothing, NOTHING!! Seriously, I hope to have the campaign DM ready in just a few days. I have been making a lot of little tweaks lately to many of the planes and think that most of them are just about right. However, I still haven't had a chance to test all of the planes against each other. On the Allied side, any feedback about the Camel, both of the Sopwith Strutters, and the Fe2b would be helpful. For the Entente, a little info about the Fokker EV, the Pfalz, and any of the German two-seaters would be welcome. I'll probably release by this weekend even if I haven't finished testing, as I AM getting a little tired of all of this. I can always release an update or two if anyone finds anything peculiar. Thanks for your interest.
