  1. Beware the Strutters

Hello, i might as well say "beware the Brisfits" ! They do not only fly on patrolling with their observer shooting at you, but break formation and attack ! If you're in front of him you'll be peppered by the front mg, and as soon as you're behind ... And they even outturn an Albatros even if they don't look as if they could turn very well - but according to the witness reports it was indeed a very good turner ! After an initial catastrophy, when the first squadron of brand-new Brisfits flew straight on after a german attack, they were all shot down. However strategy was changed and the pilots were now told to actively attack - after this the aggressive Brisfits became the horror of the german scouts. I guess this will be THE plane if flying for the crumpets - and i like its bizarre design very much. The "Harry Tate" is not that vicious, i found if attacking from above with great speed the observer did not hit me - but as a general rule: Never stay behind a two-seater, not even for a moment ... Greetings, Catfish
  2. Hello, you know what i would do with a squadron "mate" who does not answer my questions regarding claims and how to fill in the claim forms ?!! 18.30 does not work. 6.30 does not work either. 6.30 o'clock ? 6.30 pm ? 6:30 ? Or better 6h30 p.m. ? Or 6h 30 ? Or 6h 30 pm ?? or p.m. ??? or p. m. ???? See the difference ? There are so much possibilities i do not believe OFF was programmed more permissive than Windows regarding text entries. And what about regional settings ? P3 was said to be independent from regional settings set to English (and if - english(US), english(England)? etc.) - is it independent from these settings? I usually entered the altitude in meter - not one claim acknowledged. From the tableaus i take it your german is far from perfect, most times it is just ridiculous. There never was a "Snicklgruber" (maybe in the US?), there is no "Wetterschriftesatz", and "Weitemachen" is written wrong. So if you expect non-english people to use the claim system at all ... Guys if you want to sell this sim to new people who never played OFF in its former incarnations, a little bit of information - not only about this - would be a nice feature. The readme is still much too short, and the FAQs are far from explaining basic things of the sim. Even if i read the CFS3 manual it would not really help me. Greetings, Catfish
  3. Hello, well knowing how bad those Nieuports behave close to the ground i went right in as usual, but was surprised that those bl**dy nupes now did not start their nose-up dance. Instead they kept glued to my back - 2 of them, while two others went for my comrades. I even managed to shoot at one, but the side-slip was too much for my already damaged Halberstadt D.II, and "sadly you have died in combat" . n another mission a Nieport now did shoot at me although i was hugging trees and tried to escape. Seems one of the few issues left seem to have gone with this patch. Cudos ! Thanks and greetings, Catfish
  4. Hello, i always write 8h45 pm for time, since 18.30 did not win me any claim. A typical report from me is like this FE2b, 1, Encountered flight of 4 FE2b from RFC-22, near Cambrai at 6500 feet, at 6h30 pm fired 200 shots (you can say rounds, but makes no sense in german planes), observed plane smoking and spinning out of control, and crashing at 6h32 pm near aerodrome. Oh, and do not forget to enter your comrades as witnesses in the field above ! Only forename and name, no rank and no second forename. I would say 3/4 are being acknowledged this way.. but i would also like to know what is expected in terms of writing time (h, :, ., o'clock, pm/am ?), altitude (feet, meter ?) etc. Greetings, Catfish
  5. Hello Olham, I am always delighted when my Jasta finally exchanges the Eindecker against the Halberstadt. You know it happens quite often, because after my pilot dies (he does it frequently, must be his 16th incarnation) i try to re-enter the same Jasta at the same time and try again. Since i am an - if always been inavtive/retired - member of Jasta5 (green tails) i am certainly with this Jasta in OFF. My pilot Heinrich Mathy would have liked to get a Zeppelin as in reality, but there was none to be found - YET  . I will instantly paint its tail green as soon as the OFF team delivers (hint hint) Hrrm. The Halberstadt is indeed a very nimble plane in OFF - i have no idea how it behaved in reality, but the short wings and the rudder without tailfin certainly propose such a behaviour. As well it climbs like crazy, rolls well enough, can turn with the Nieuports, and dive at speeds of 250+ km/h without problem, AND take quite some punishment. It is not as fast as the Albatros, and as well she is almost too nimble for me or my joystick - you need a steady hand to keep your target in the eyesight - if there only was an eyesight that deserved that name lol. In comparison to how the D.II behaved in Red Baron 2 (not 3d) it is certainly a winner. There is a general problem with OFF or so i think, the Halberstadt and the Albatros have problems to do a looping. When you glide down to gather speed, and finally raise the nose the speed bleeds away much too quickly, even with 300 km/h starting there is less than 40 km/h at the highest point, and the planes fall sideways in a strange manner - just does not feel real. Reading Udet, and Jentsch, at least the Albatros was well capable of loopings, indeed it still reacted positively to rudder and ailerons at the peak of a looping, and still had speed enough to fly on reversed from that position for some time. Its plywood fuselage was indeed not very heavy. Thanks and greetings, Catfish
  6. Hello, thanks a lot, your support for this simulator, and us, is the best ! Seems you really listen to your customers, something which is not at all standard in those days. Or to say it with highest australian praise: "Not too bad ..." Thanks for this great sim - i can only complain this is now so hard, i am really done after one or two missions ... phew ... Greetings, Catfish
  7. Poooooor Pfalzer's

Hello, i feel with you all, the Pfalz is one pretty plane, and a good and stable one, for civilian purposes lol. But it is not even especially faster in spite of its aerodynamic design. When i am over enemy territory (a shame that OFF demands it from me, because only german reconnaissance planes and the low-flying "Schlacht-Staffeln" made it into enemy territory, apart from lone wolfers who mostly did not suvive the war) i usually turn my nose in direction of the fatherland before i attack - and only from above ! Then i go down, gathering speed, and even more speed, for one strafe, and then dive on over the lines. As pilot Klien from Jasta 5 said "Now run you pilots vigorous and brave" lol. Greetings, Catfish
  8. Hello, there is also this on youtube, 5 parts in all, on Udet, showing some stunts, but also how he got involved with the Nazis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxXrkBiVE1c...feature=related If there is a film that sums it up pretty well, this is it. Greetings, Catfish
  9. Hello, there is a lot more about Ernst Udet, not only Guynemer, and not only WW1, but also what happened then until Udet committed suicide. From the stories of my father i take those history channel episodes with a grain of salt, especially when this is only a look from "outside", and decades later, but the series is well worth watching anyway. Greetings, Catfish
  10. Hello, i do not know how it would run with a "Null-modem" cable simply connecting the serial ports ? Anyway i think the usual network cable cat5 and up will be better performance-wise. One thing is the routers here in Germany sometimes do not have the 192.168.1.1 ip (1und1 with Draytek routers and a lot of others have - ok), but e.g. the T-Com routers have an 11, or even a 101 as last digit (esp. the common speedport routers). Then you can work with dynamic IP, so all PCs going online receive a random IP every time, or you change that to a static IP, usually being e.g. one PC gets the 192.168.1.10, and the other the 192.168.1.11 - but as said before probably not with the T-com routers because the 10 or 11 may be the router's own IP. And the installation of OFF certainly has to be exactly the same on both machines .. Greetings, Catfish
  11. Next airplane for OFF?

Hello, bump ! I am still for Zeppelins, and a Taube, and Gothas, Handley-Page 0-400s, maybe some seaplanes (hint hint !). Then in some previews of OFF there were mechanics shown, repairing planes at aerodromes, and already a Morane-Saulnier Bullett in apreview video - where has this gone ? - but planes, more of them, two-seaters Greetings, Catfish
  12. OT: My Great War Library

Hello, woa, thanks for posting this !! I have been looking for charts like that, there are only a few in Robinson's "Naval airships", and small. How i would like to manouever a Zeppelin ... there are phantastic stories about the airships and their technical advantages and issues - guess i will have a look-out for this book ! Thanks and greetings, Catfish
  13. Hello, nice screenshots indeed ! The skies look beautiful, and those clouds are phantastic ! Well, no clouds here .. I almost felt some pity with him Greetings, Catfish
  14. I have my @$$ kicked!

Hello, yes, welcome to the club lol. But i must say i never had so much fun getting my a$$ kicked Greetings, Catfish
  15. Hello, thanks, i knew this one already, but i usually save it under "Favorites" only to forget it then ... Great site, also Stahlgewitter ... There is also site about airships (something i'm interested in) at http://www.german-army-airships.org/arkr.htm The FAQs are interesting, and somewhere in the links there is a whole book as pdf, if only in german, about the german army airships. Thanks and greetings, Catfish
  16. O/T WWI for IL2

Hi, "OOF" ?! "Over Oleg's fields" ? While i would have liked that a few years ago i think the IL2 engine is a bit dated. I certainly still agree that there cannot be enough WW1 sims, but if i remember right there were some serious issues with the WW2 flight model and a WW1 sim when the Gennadich team first tried to program their WW1 "Knights of the sky" sim (now RoF) with the IL2 engine - as well Oleg Maddox forbade the team to use the IL2 engine, maybe because they wanted to make money with it ? Now if this Oof is a free mod, why not - "Koa v. Deutschmark" is no beginner in the scene, let's wish them luck. Greetings, Catfish
  17. Command Key Card for OFF

Hello, thanks Homeboy, very good ! Maybe you should post this over at SimHQ, i get questions via pm all the time, how those controls work and which key commands work for what. FAQ and readmes are nice, but ... this is better. Thanks and greetings, Catfish
  18. Hello, i have recently seen the "Red Baron" from Niama films, and i liked it, if only because it is the only film made recently that has anything to do with WW1 aviation at all *sigh* .. i know it is again highly inaccurate. I wonder why those older films have better stories, even if flight scenes and at least some details are correct in modern films, they will not automatically develop into a good film, there is lacking so much older films had. If you are only in for the flight scenes, you will have seen almost all after having watched those links : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIcgfxSP_f4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Er--DLaG7SM...feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-58SS77U84 edit: maybe Uncleal/Gimpiguy already posted those ... Greetings, Catfish
  19. Hello, "nice" paintshop lol ! It looks like one of our german telephone "poles" - all german t-com "things" or official colours have changed from their classic yellow to magenta, or maybe pink some 15 years ago. I do not know which clever marketing idiot invented this - but there was a recent survey which turned out 95 percent of the people did not like it at all, and 3 percent said it does not matter to them. There is nothing worse than a rusty, magenta-coloured pole standing among otherwise nice houses, or trees. This is definitely optical environmental pollution. For your plane I vote for a magenta/violet/pink checquered pattern, so every allied pilot will be instantly blinded, or instinctively turns away from those colours. Hrrm. I am sorry to hear our promising ace has crashed, we are all shocked and hope he's well wherever he is now. With a F1 or later Dr.I i always try to stay above the others, and only go down shortly to shoot - no allied plane is a match to the triplane in climbing, so you can always withdraw vertically. Good luck next time - good there IS a next time here ... S! Catfish
  20. AI collision

Hello, another Wonder-weapon, the two-fuselage monoplane I only saw this once in a hundred plays, two planes of my flight near the aerodrome at the end of a mission. What's interesting is that i waited this time, and the whole flight really landed at the aerodrome. Only problem was they did not stop their engines - but they DO land ! Greetings, Catfish
  21. Hello, picture showing the Bristol scout "helicopter" it flew vertically for some time, along the smoke trail visible. B.t.w. very nice visible wing damage ! Maybe this damage is why it behaved strange ? Another thing in that respect: I saw (2 times out 30 or so) Nieuport 11s, which obviously tried to aim at me, but they were far below - so they raised their noses towards me and went slowly down engine up tail down, until they crashed. Seems they were so target-fixated that they forgot to start a normal ascend - maybe there's a connection with the other observations ? DM to hard, patch 1.28a, guns normal. Greetings, Catfish
  22. Hello, well, it is better than in phase 2, but i also saw this. Especially the Nieuports, and Bristol scouts seem to have problems when closer to the ground. They will rise and fall until mostly crashing. The Bristol scout even hangs on its prop sometimes, and then follows me like a helicopter, made some screenshots When i recently engaged a flight of three Nieuport 17s with a Hl. D.II, i managed to get away, only flying straight, but very close to the ground. The nearest Nieuport followed me, but not in a straight line: going up, falling, going up a.s.o. without ever firing at me. Anyone else saw this ? Greetings, Catfish
  23. DM and Guns Consensus?

Hello, since i am shooting at BE2cs all the time i realized there is almost no damage to be seen - the plane falls sooner or later, but i can empty my whole magazine e.g. into the tail, or the wings, and it will neither show any damage (bullett holes) , nor show parts breaking off before getting out of control and falling - guns normal, dm = hard. Or ... Phase 4 ? You know if someone writes about issues or observations with the sim, it is not clear whether this is an "issue" with the latest patch, a "CFS3 thing" or a complete new feature that has to be implemented in another version, if possible. So Winder's answers are sometimes a bit cryptic when he says there will be no new features before phase 4, and 1.28 is the last patch. Thanks and greetings, Catfish
  24. Letters Home

Hello, high time that this was bumped up again ! I already read this earlier, and always wanted to post how well-done i think it is ! Thanks a lot Dej Greetings, Catfish
  25. Joystick Recommendations

Hello, also thanks to all from me, i think i will need a joystick sooner or later. The X52 is nice, but it fits to the X-52, not to WW1 lol. I would like the aviator, but there's no force feedback Will also look for CH .. Greetings, Catfish
