Can't see it in another thread, but I've just been told that the first ROF patch comes with a free Alb DV and Nieuport 28. Yes, I said free. Good news eh? Still waiting for my RoF to arrive................... Lets hope it comes with an Se5. (Just kidding.... well, not kidding, but you know what I mean.)

AC Cobra. Never owned one, never will, but first saw one on a beach in Majorca 20+ years ago, and never forgotten it. "....The Cobra was perhaps too successful as a performance car and reputedly contributed to the implementation of national speed limits in the United Kingdom. An AC Cobra Coupe was calculated to have done 185 mph (298 km/h) on the M1 Motorway in 1964...." If I had one, I wouldn't care if the top speed was 50mph. I'd still get bugs stuck to my teeth because I couldn't stop grinning. Beautiful, just beautiful.

Got mine on order from the US. Reserve judgement until I see for myself, - there are always bugs with new stuff. CFS3 looked crap out the box, but led us to BHaH. RoF is just at the beginning. Got a curiousity though - This video would seem to be a RoF Fokker DR1 flying in FSX. Err, can we do that????

List of available keyboard commands
Flyby PC replied to SGCSG1's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Nice idea, but don't forget the Il2 factor. Lots of guys fly both, and it makes sense to build a comfy configuration which works with both Sims as far as you can. (Assuming you fly both of course). Makes it easy to switch between Sims. Also, if you're still learning and progress through to multiplayer, the advice people can give you won't be as helpful if you've altered your default codes. Folks will tell you what to press, but it won't happen. I also used to make a few Fraps vids, and had lots of weird combo's to get rid of tags, huds etc. My rig config would make no sense to anybody else, but it's amazing how quick your fingers find their way around the keyboard. (Maybe not that amazing when I recall my spelling....). -
Nothing clever, just Googled the error code. You're not alone... Maybe let us know if the fix works. http://www.vistax64.com/vista-mail/173610-...92a0-0x000.html As for the blue meter, you could try the three fingered salute, CTrl Alt Del , - check the list of what's running and see if you can at least find out what it's called. Just an idea, I don't have any suggestions. Never seen it before.

Enough to make you weep!
Flyby PC replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I had a friend on a working holiday in Oz maybe 20 years ago, who got himself a job with skip/waste company for a few weeks. One job they had was to clear out an old garage after the proprietor had died. There were authentic Model T engine blocks, fenders, mudguards & all manner of parts just thrown away. My mate tried to argue the stuff was worth money and that some people would want it, but it didn't do any good. It all went for scrap. He hadn't the money to save it himself. My mate was also keen on restoring old motorbikes, he had a Matchless lying in bits at home, so I expect he was thoroughly miserable to see it all happen. - A peculiarly close fitting torture. Such is life, but I've learned not to judge too quickly. As a stonemason, it regularly does my head in to see quality stone buildings being left to rot through neglect. Bad enough, but even worse if you see 'monkeys' repairing it on the cheap with cement mortars, - it's tomorrows tragedy happening today. Most of the time, it's not the people who own the place at fault, nor the workmen doing it, (most of whom are not monkeys), but it's often the specification from a so called 'consultant' not doing his job properly. Our stone built environment won't be replaced when it's gone, and the world would be a sorry place without it. (For your info. a cement based mortar will very often destroy the stone you're trying to maintain and also causes all sorts of weathering & dampness problems. For stone, always use lime mortars & people who know what they're doing.) -
Could be a RAM memory issue. As you fly, your mission data gets recorded, and once you're file is full, you crash to desktop. I was told your virtual memory should be about half your RAM, - but advice on this varies. My other suggestion would be heat. Because you can start CFS3 and fly for a while without CTD, it suggests the problem occurs after your PC reaches a critical threshold then fails. Because CFS3 is a demanding beast for memory and graphics, your components might be getting hotter and hotter until they don't function correctly. Unfortunately you're describing a problem which might be a number of things, (but it's also one of those problems which lets you get to know your PC a lot better). There was a very full and informative thread posted here a while ago, and I'll post a link if I can find it.... http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showt...amp;hl=graphics

OT Anyone play a Musical Instrument?
Flyby PC replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
As a kid, I got lessons in piano, trumpet, drums, bagpipes, and recorder. None of it took - not a note. I'm not tone deaf or anything, but playing music has always been an up hill journey for me. Paradoxically, I love to listen to music, but I can listen to anything provided it's good (8gig Ipod = full). I've no preference by type. Similar with books. I can read instructions or textbooks 20 times, but it just doesn't stick. Show me once and I'll get it. I've nevertheless got 2 University degrees in Academic subjects, but apart from 7 wasted years of torture, these mean absolutely nothing to me compared to my practical 'hands on' City & Guilds in Stonemasonry. Found my niche, never looked back. If only they'd given me a hammer and chisel when I was 4, I might have been rich by now too. Seems I'm a taker not a giver when it comes to music, but I do know exactly where you musical folks are coming from, and you have my greatest respect (and no little gratitude) for the colour you bring to our lives. -
I believe us Brits are all 'Island Monkeys'. (Perhaps it loses something in translation).

early war suggestions for Phase 4
Flyby PC replied to Waldemar Kurtz's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I've got an odd idea for Phase 4, though it's not really a progression so much as a whole new direction. With the well developed excellence behind the scenery building, ambience, and features, I reckon one possible new direction might be something along the lines of Jeff Waines War of the Worlds. You have appropriate 19th C (ish) ground units already, battle simulations, the scenery can even go 'red', and I'm sure somebody could come up with a serviceable fighting machine, heat ray and all.... If anybody else already has the War of the Worlds game, you'll know it could do with a good makeover. Downside is the Martians were undefeatable, (though the Thunderchild nailed one). Not good odds if you're a humble artilleryman. I need to read the book again, - I'm not even 100% sure the Thunderchild was in the book. Been years since I read it. I do know WW1 fighter aircraft weren't in the book, but there is potential for some epic struggles. Maybe mankind could have made a better fight of it if only he'd had aircraft. Just another idea for the pot.... One with a twist. -
I'll drink to that. First class job.

I'd like to volunteer myself for testing. Woooha!!! $16,000 ??? - Test failed.

I only contribute a fraction of what I used to. I lost faith in the old SOH forum, round about the same time that real life went a bit insane work wise. I used to enjoy making flight sim movies too, but finding the time is very difficult nowadays. Add to this the sound copyright issues, and the latest youtube carry on, and well, maybe it's not just the lack of time available... What brings me back into forums is the desire to help others. I'm no expert, nor can I afford the best hardware, but other people were good enough to talk me through my difficulties and help get the best out of my limited machines. If I can pass even a little of that along to someone else, then I'm happy. For me, that's the whole point of a forum. Once somebody has gone through a problem with a forum, the discussion often becomes a troubleshoot guide for others for months and even years to come. If you lose your database, (as can happen), then future help depends on the right people being there to contribute all over again. If those experts have moved on, the next best thing are the regular 'browsers' (bit like me), that maybe don't know the fixes, but do recall the threads and know where to search. Lurkers, or folks that want help but don't want to register can often self help and do their own searches, and long may that continue.

FAO UK OFF'ers - TIMEWATCH SAT 21st BBC2 8.00pm
Flyby PC replied to Davy TASB's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I was interest by the damage issues - sort of topical too. The 303 rounds didn't start fires unless they hit the fuel or oil tanks. Pilots tried to kill the pilot or 'saw' each others aircraft with rounds fired to cause structural damage. It would seem this was more effective than going for the fuel?? - Can that be right? I know Mick Mannock met his nightmare in death in flames, but I wonder how frequently planes went on fire. With regards to 85 squadron, it is a disgrace, but that was the way back then, and still is in some quarters though much less brazen. The 'priviledged elite' were still dying in their thousands besides their fellow men. Despite the slap in the face, at least Mannock was spared the chore of leading a bunch of 'hooray hendry's' into battle. Things were different after the war. In some ways it was a great leveller. Fighting men wouldn't go back to the subservient livestyles they'd left. The massive country estates became a shadow of their former selves, many beginning to fail and fall into disrepair. If we think privedge and elitism is an issue today, just imagine what it was like before the Great War. -
Huge cache of WWI records discovered
Flyby PC replied to tttiger's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
What an excellent story. If only they'd found the records sooner, just think of the closure it might have given to so many people directly effected. I wouldn't be too hard on the Red Cross. They secure access to do their work in some very dodgy quarters with some very 'iffy' regimes. I suspect they can only do so precisely and specifically because they don't get involved, or rock too many boats. It's beyond their remit to get involved with anything which might prejudice their 'impartiality' - (if impartiality is the right word). It's not that they refused access for anyone to see these documents, it's simply that nobody ever asked to see them, nor understood what they were. Begs the question why no researchers found it sooner. Peter Barton has proven it COULD be found, and all credit to him for doing so. -
I liked it Red Dog. Funny, but I always 'kinda' thought pilots would have favourite aircraft, and others they were glad to see the back of. I lost count after 30 different aircraft, so I doubt there was time to get over attached to any one in particular. Seems like your plane was just another piece of equipment and not something you got too fond of. Quite a contrast with all the personalised aircraft flown by the Germans. (Or maybe I'm reading too much into it. Planes would be getting damaged all the time too...) Imagine jumping into the same cockpit where someone had already been killed or injured.

Just a small suggestion - opinions vary, but some folks reckon with framerates higher than about 30, your eye cannot perceive the difference between better framerates. You could try limiting your framerate to 35 max, - your view should be fine, but your PC isn't killing itself trying to deliver higher and higher framerates which you eye can't keep up with anyway. I know it goes against the grain to have the best technology 'under performing' for you, but it might do the trick. Sometimes a 'workaround' is the next best thing to a fix. How are you powering your graphics cards? If they are sharing a single power source, perhaps they are robbing each other of sufficient power to operate efficiently. If your DVD's and disks and video cards are all plugged into the same cable, try spreading the load more evenly. Most power units have 3 or 4 separate sets of the yellow red and black power feeds, makes sense to use them all and spread the load. Even so, gut instinct still says it's a heat issue, - but I'd go with almccoyjr, Over50 and Herr Prop-Wasche. All these guys sound like they know a lot more than I do. I'm just repeating what more learned gents have told me in the past. (I just make a suggestion then run away before anybody asks me any questions or wants me to fill in the details... ).

I hate to go against the grain here...
Flyby PC replied to tn_prvteye's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Ever watch 'Wings'? A 1970's TV series about the RFC. I was just a young kid, but I still remember the introduction of the Eindecker's forward firing machine gun devastating the British Morale, - armed only with pistols and no parachutes as I recall. Wouldn't mind seeing that series again sometime. Sorry tn_prvteye, don't want to take you off topic... -
I have doubts that a new operating system will make any difference. Correct me if I'm wrong, I read you were flying CFS3 on 2 sliders for a while, all OK, then it crashed on multiplayer, but was ok 5 mins later. That doesn't sound like your operating system, but your system coping with CFS3 initially, but continued play taking you over a critical threshold somewhere, then failing. You might be overheating, (and taking the side off might not be enough cooling), you might be out of RAM, or your vitual memory isn't set right. Did you put your own memory sticks? Are they OK or did you touch the copper bits with your unearthed fingers? It might be you CPU - I had a Celeron which defied the laws of physics and drove me up the wall, and it might be your PSU - Power Supply Unit. How many watts is it, and what's it running? I'm reliably informed these power units decay over time, and output may be considerably less than what it says on the label. I'd be very suspicious too if you've been adding new video/sound cards too. Why heat & RAM? If it's heat, naturally something takes time to heat, so the fault occurs after some gameplay, then goes away after a period of cooling. RAM is similar in it's effect, (I'm no expert and getting near the thin ice here...) as you fly, your PC might be recording all your flight data to a paging file, then fails once the paging file is full or you run out of memory. This occurs if your RAM is too small or Virtual memory set too large. I think from memory, your virtual memory should be set to half the amount of RAM you have. Otherwise you divert resources the game needs into recording data nobody needs. I'm not an expert in this, I'm just quoting advice I've been given before. Apologies if it doesn't make sense. CFS3 is a demanding beast on your PC's performance, and while 4 out of 5 things might be working sweetly, it's the one left which nails you. I don't think that's your operating system. Just my tuppenceworth, and I'm sorry I didn't see you SOH thread to know what you've already tried.

Spite feeds on itself. If you bite, and say something provocative by return, the whole issue festers and the seeds of future resentment are sown. For a few, that's the whole object of the exercise, and the internet allows them to do it without risking a smack in the mouth. I've got a pile of games I've never liked, some excellent games but not my cup of tea, and some that were so bad they're only fit for the bin. I don't feel compelled to slag off the ones I didn't like, I just don't play them, then nobody, including me, gets offended. If I've wasted my money, then I'll be more careful next time. I'd also draw a line between criticising the game, criticising the marketing/distribution and 'payware', and condemnation of the need for CFS3. If you don't like payware because it's payware, then having someone explain it to you is still going to hurt. And if this Rise of flight is better than OFF when it comes out, then great. I'll have another DVD on the 'good' pile, -beside OFF.

Sopwith Triplane vs Fokker Dr.1......
Flyby PC replied to Womenfly2's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I'm sure I read somewhere the Dr.1, (and further less successful tri-plane prototypes) was/were developed in response to the Sopwith's exceptional rate of climb and agility when it was first brought into service. (Wasn't there some reference to it's 'climbing like a monkey?' - Sorry, I might be confused with something else) By the time Fokker had developed their Dr.1, everything else had moved forward too - armament, engine power, structural issues etc. It was a better triplane, but still blighted by similar structural weaknesses, and unhappy compromise between flat out speed and excessive drag caused by all the struts and wires.
