No..No..NOOOOOOOO (for an entirely new reason - O/T)
von Baur replied to von Baur's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Oh, for Pete's sake!!! Now the computer won't boot up. I've had two hard drives: a 250GB for the OS, TIR, flight controls, etc. and a 500GB gor games. I installed W7 onto a new 250GB SSD (with plans to get a 1TB SSD for the game itself later) and it didn't go online. Tried restarting and it wouldn't boot. Put the old 250 back in and now I can't even get the POST screen up. Noticing a slight burnt smell from the PSU, an 850W, which should have been enough for two hard drives, two DVD drives, CPU and heat sink fan and two GPU's and it's only about 8-10 months old. At least the PSU will arrive before the game. I hope. -

I have the same problem, Duke. No cable, no DSL. I have a wireless internet connection. It's "high speed" in that it's much faster than dialup, but it's only 500kB, which actually downloads at about 50K-60K at best. Unfortunately, it looks like the skin pack is download only. Hopefully I'll be able to get it anyway. I've downloaded World of Warplanes and RoF, which are four or five Gigs each, if I recall, but the each took two days and had some pauses, hence my trepidation in that regard with WOFF. **edit** I was posting at the same time you were, HumanDrone. How big is the download file for WOFF? I have a fast(er) connection at work, too. Will it fit on a 32GB thumb drive? Can it be put onto a moveable drive? I've tried that before and I could neither save nor copy/paste the zip file to one, making it impossible to transfer home. The IT guy at work said some files have a code in them that prevents that, ostensibly for copyright protection. The hoops we honest people have to jump through because of the dishonest few. -
The release is official!! But rereading the thread some interesting questions arise. Mention is made that ties will be decided based on earliest post. But not clearly stated is whether that means that the first person to offer his guess is the only one to whom that guess belongs, thus nullifying any subsequent identical guesses or if it means that the first three people who submit a winning entry win and everyone else is SOL. Also, it specifically says "Starting from today's date guess how many days will lapse until WOFF will be released to the public.", not what day do you think WOFF will be released. in which case not only is there only one correct answer, there is only one legitmate answer. But I will defer this to the boss. (largely because I'm out either way... )

Widowmaker, the hun only shot it up a bit. It was you at the controls when it crashed. Clearcut case of "pilot error" if you ask me (which you didn't).
-
Thanx for clearing that up, sir.

No resume, eh? Hmmm. Given the skins pack is 4GB and ony available by download that may negatively impact my getting them. I don't mind spending 25 bucks and not being able to get it all at once, but not being able to get it at all.....
-
No rush, skin pack isn't available yet. I'll spring for it when it is. The devs haven't let us down yet and I don't expect they will with this, either. Though it is a little disappointing to have to spend extra this time. I suppose we've all become a bit spoiled. **editted for spelling**

Full HD TV instead of a Monitor - What a great vision!
von Baur replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Hmmm. It appears Oculus Rift may not be the Godsend I was expecting. From what I can make out, based on an email I received from them, it will have a split screen with (and this is based on their screenshots) a significant overlap. Total horizontal FOV may be as little as 45*. And it may not be compatible with CFS3/OFF/WOFF. Damned shame, if that's the case. Will have to wait until it becomes commercially available and see what's what. Oh well. If they don't see the logic of using passive 3D tech to achieve depth perception, thus making the whole screen available for the image, someone will. **editted for spelling** -
I'll be placing my order for the DVD when I get home this evening. I'll start downloading it, too, but as I mentioned in another thread I'm thinking the disc will arrive before the download is complete. I wonder if the dowwnload site supports retries, a la GetRight?

Lots of very good info, Tamper. Thanx.

Whew! For a minute there I didn't know if you were agreeing with me or arguing with me, HumanDrone. -
Or charge Lou for three more memberships. Or include all of them when you're buying rounds.

The cat has savaged my TrackIR...
von Baur replied to Hauksbee's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
LO-F-L, Hauksbee. I have cats (well, cat now) myself. How long did it take to peel Garfield off the ceiling after that? -
"Inserting a virtual drive"? That sounds like an idea, Tranquillo. Being the tech-dullard I am, how would I go about that> Copy certain files from the CD to a thumb drive? And if that's correct, which ones? I wold guess I'd then have to instruct OFF/CFS3 to look for these files in a new location, too. How would that be done?

New Controller - Reactive Grip - Kickstarter
von Baur replied to LEChouffleur's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Very interesting. Not sure it would translate well to flight or driving sims without being placed on a base of some sort though. I think having a handle that you have to hold up rather than one that you place your hands on would detract from the immersion. I was very surprised by some of the other tech in the video. Especially that platform thing that apparently lets you "walk" and "turn" in VR. Thanx for the info and the link, Chouffleur. -

Went after your Track IR, huh? I would have guessed he'd target your (wait for it....) (wait for it....) (wait for it....) MOUSE!! -
LOL. Which one are you?

Great news! Thanx Javito. BTW, a couple more days and it will be mid-December. (December=31 days..early=1-10: mid=11-20: late=21-31)

Widowmaker's favorite album, Lou. Not for the songs, rather the flying dolphin on the jacket. Interesting side note...the dolphin used in the shoot was named Sopwith. Personally I never liked "Life is Hard in the Balloon Corps", mostly because the writer, Kevin Darling, gave up his artistic integrity when he shortened the title from its original "Life is Hard in the Women's Auxiliary Balloon Corps" to satisfy the record producer, Sir Anthony Cecil Hogmanay Melchett. Of course, the real blame lies with the label's owner, I suppose, one S. Baldrick. But hold onto that one. It's one of only a few proofread and approved by the Honourable George Colthurst St. Barleigh containing the misprint "Woosie" instead of "Woopsie" before being caught by his overworked and underappreciated assistant, whose name escapes me at the moment. Once again, your flair for finding rare artifacts from the Great War shows itself.

My point remains that a promise was made to keep this site informed. They continued to post screenshots and videos to tantalize and tease, to stoke the fires of anticipation and desire, to keep interest alive. And all this after the name WOFF was created (i.e. I don't think your semantics-based arguement holds water, Jim). But when the time came for that promise to be kept...when release became imminent..., it wasn't.

HEAR, HEAR!! Wait. Maybe that should be, "READ, READ!!"

Full HD TV instead of a Monitor - What a great vision!
von Baur replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I've seen them online, rjw. First priority will be 3D for the living room (probably at least two years unless my current one breaks before then). Can you imagine the UFC or the NFL in 70", 4000-line, 240Hz 3D? I've already measured out a spot on my wall. At this point I don't really anticipate buying another fixed monitor for flying. Oculus Rift looks very promising. And I've been waiting 14 years since first conceiving (and boring the hell out of my wife with) the idea of a head-mounted display married to a 1-1 head tracking system for someone with the wherewithall to make it a reality. Maybe that is not far off. Until then I'm quite happy with my 2D 32" 1080p. -
Well, I never went to college, but from the sound of it Hauksbee did. It also sounds like he's been indulging in something fermented, whether sparkling or not.

Full HD TV instead of a Monitor - What a great vision!
von Baur replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Lou, I thought about that briefly but discarded it quickly, as the wall behind me is about 8 feet from the back of my head...a bit too far, I would think. Also, that side of the room has become the "looking for a more permanent home" pile. Olham, I just remembered the beginnings of my HDTV adventures, and another reason I bought the 32": it might be helpful. We bought two 37" sets, one for our bedroom and one for our son. Both were HD and both said 1080p on the box. I told Frau von Baur on the way home that ours was making a small detour to the computer when we got it home. I hooked it up and it was amazing...results like you described...seeing other planes from a much greater distance and basically eliminating the use of labels except for identifying specific individuals. And the effect when you're closing for the shot...absolutely awesome. Of course I wasn't about to leave it there. Our couch is comfy, but not that comfy. So I went back to the 19" 4x3 monitor and started counting down the days until our son left for the Army when I could appropriate his . When I did, I found that I couldn't get my computer to see it in anything higher than 720. I couldn't figure out what was wrong. After all, he'd been playing his X-Box and watching TV and DVD's in 1080 on it. After while I decided to look at the manual and when I did I found out it was 1080p capable but only 720 native and apparently that was controlling the way my video card saw it. That didn't bother me too much though, because I knew that once he got to a permanent station he'd get it back. So I started looking for a permanent replacement, keeping in mind to make sure it was a native 1080p. I found one, I bought it and we've flown happily ever after since. So anyone who's thinking about doing this just make sure whatever you buy says it's got a native resolution of 1080. -
I'm a little disappointed the devs have neglected to mention anything at all here, now that WOFF's arrival is imminent. I seem to recall a statement from them that they would. Check that. More than a little.
