The Canadian fighter pilots did very well in WWI, partly because they were better trained before they arrived in France. I think a lot of British pilots hardly knew how to fly when they first went into combat. The RAF learnt its lesson which is why so many pilots were trained overseas in WWII in Canada, the US and in South Africa. Also the weather is better in these places than in the UK so more intensive training can take place. Even now courses are offered in South Africa at Port Elizabeth to get your PPL in a few weeks. You get a holiday in the sun and the pilot's licence! I did read somewhere that in 1918 a third of the RAF fighter pilots were Canadian. And the American pilots in the RFC were enlisted and trained in Canada, like Bill Lambert of 24 sqn and others.

Barker was not a 'forgotten ace' at all. No VC winner would be. And at least he got his VC in the proper way with many people seeing his famous fight. Bishop was 'given' his VC without anyone seeing what he was supposed to have done. And as he had a reputation of inflating his exploits he has gone down in history as a fake. But the media wanted a hero, so they got one. In Barker's last fight he shot down a Rumpler and then was bounced by two Jastas of Fokker DVIIs (about 15). He shot down 3 of them and was wounded many times but managed to land his very shot about Snipe inside the British lines. For that he got the VC. And before that he shot down 40 aircraft with one aircraft - Camel B6313 which is still considered the record for one airframe.

I thought it might be Raymond Collishaw who did a lot of airfield attacks. But he certainly wasn't 'forgotten to history' so it must be someone else. Corsaire, according to my records Salmson went bankrupt in 1957 and were bought by Renault. Which company makes bits for Airbuses? They seem to have been the only engine manufacturer to make water-cooled radials - a rather strange idea as the advantage of the radial layout is that it makes air-cooling efficient.

I have 2 x 500 Mb DDR2-800Mhz cards knocking about from an old scrapped pc. pm me your address if you want them. They are from a pc that stopped working - mobo problems? But I kept the case and drives and replaced the mobo, the CPU (new mobo has a different Intel socket) and new DDR3 memory. It wasn't that expensive with a 2 core CPU - remember that WOFF does not use more than 2 cores anyway... Yes, old memory is always more expensive as nobody really wants it and they stop making it.

Germans not interested in WWI anniversary?
JimAttrill replied to JimAttrill's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I am with Hauksbee on this - I was taught that the German superinflation of the twenties was done deliberately in order to pay reparations in worthless marks. Not right, so it seems. And yes, we should celebrate the END of the war (as in Remembrance day Nov 11th) not the beginning of the war. Although the more I read about the way people thought in 1914 it seems that both sides were looking for an excuse for a 'lovely war' which would be over by Christmas with medals given out on both sides. And the Archduke (who dat?) in Serbia (where dat?) provided good reason to start blowing the bugles. Real war-weariness came much later. -
Nungesser's skull, crossbones, coffin and candles are all Masonic in origin. At least that is what I have read, for I am not a Mason myself. Of course it isn't very secret if you paint your aircraft with it all.

Maybe that was the only colour they had in stores

The Camel was easy to recognise in the skies of WWI because it had a 'tapered gap' between the wings. Theory of the time was that the gap should always be the same and about the same as the wing chord. But the designer of the Camel wanted to make the top wing in one piece with no dihedral. So they just doubled the dihedral of the bottom wing And even when they started to make the top wing in three pieces they left the arrangement as it was. (Useless information department)

anyone read this book? : http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0297859943/ref=s9_qpp_co_p14_d99_i4?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=left-2&pf_rd_r=0S5GRZFXYHS8A1E5NZAM&pf_rd_t=3201&pf_rd_p=466496393&pf_rd_i=typ01

I noticed that in 1915 (in WOFF) I was warned about enemy 'flak'. This word should be changed to 'archie' which is what the WWI RFC pilots used. 'Flak' comes from the German abbreviation for Flugzeugabwehrkanone, or "aircraft defense cannon". 'Flak' was rapidly adopted by the Allies for obvious reasons, but it was not used in World War One at all. Let's get the immersion right!

Woff uses the word 'flak'
JimAttrill replied to JimAttrill's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
There are four pages of this topic on SimHQ here: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/3915935/The_word_flak_was_not_used_in_#Post3915935 Why we have two forums is a bit beyond me. Politics I suppose. -
The main problem with Vista is that it chomps your memory (which you don't have much of). Ending sentence in a preposition - hmmmm. My wife's laptop was using 1.5Gb after boot with no applications loaded! I formatted the whole thing and installed W7 32 as it was an older machine. After boot it is using about .7Gb and seemed much faster generally.

Perhaps it was better that he didn't survive the war as he was Jewish - as you have read the book I suppose you know that. I'll see if I can find the book. Thanks.

Yes, I read the 'free' pages on amazon and it didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. Does anybody know of a good book on the history of (especially) Immelmann, Boelke and Voss. (MvR has been done to death IMHO). Has to be in English unfortunately.

I have activated both and the screenshots mod definitely does not work. I still get the same old pictures of goggles etc. What am I not doing or doing wrong? edited: I had an 'extra' folder 'screenshots fixed' and under that was 'screenshots'. Got rid of the extra folder and now it works. Could do with getting rid of the watch (as suggested above).

Just installed JSGME to the WOFF folder and the news update into the MODS folder. I have now activated the news and will see if it works. Next up is Hellshades screenshot mod.

Well, I'm just posting here to keep the place alive. I like it here... -
It looks good, but I can't afford it with the Rand/£ exchange rate at over 18 now.

Does WOFF ever go on sale?
JimAttrill replied to MrGoTime's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I have a complaint that my engine keeps on bursting into flames. At this rate my pc will slow down as it will be full of deceased virtual pilots. Is there a way I can land somewhere instantly? -
Recommended cooling fan for AMD 965 or similar
JimAttrill posted a topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Hi folks I have an AMD 965 which is 3.4Mhz stock and is now o/c to 3.9Mhz. It runs WOFF well, but the stock fan is a bit noisy and the temps regularly go over 60°C. The socket is AMD3+ and I wonder what sort of coolers are recommended. The web is not much help as there seem to be thousands of fans available. ps. I am not interested in water cooling as it costs too much. -

I worked on some water-cooled computers in the past. They were big blue things with IBM written on them. Software AG in Darmstadt Germany used to push the water through radiators to heat the building I heard rumours that they were going to have a swimming pool on the roof and heat that as well. -

Interesting topic. Of course WOFF is on sale - you just have to buy it. But somehow I think you mean to ask if WOFF is being discounted at a 'sale' price. It is not. -

Hi tamper, thanks for your very interesting post. My Mobo is a Gigabyte 880GA-UD3H with which I am very happy. I have always used ASUS mobos before but one was not available anywhere in SA at that time. I don't think there is anything about fan speed in the Bios but I can have a look. I upped the voltage on the CPU to 1.45 from 1.4 and tried the multiplier at 20 (it failed) and then at 19.5 which seems to work ok. However, Core temp reports it is running at 200.88 x 19 which gives 3.8Mhz. I see you are running a Zalman CNPS990 which is a bit out of my price range. I have used Zalman fans before but the one I have lying about is not suitable for more than a 945 processor. I did try it and the temps went high, What I have done for WOFF and CFS3 is run them on cores 2 and 3 which might help. The cores are running at 45-49 basically at idle. With Prime95 I saw 69-70 which I think is maybe a bit high. I have tried using the AMD overclocker but it is a bit hard to understand and last time it whacked the processor to 4.5Hz upon which the whole thing collapsed with a blue screen. I thought the Tmax on this processor was 70 but none of the web info seems to agree. Some say as low as 65°C. Anyway, I get reasonable performance from WOFF (but reasonable depends on where you are coming from). I used to run OFF with 4Gb ram and an ASUS 6450 but have at least upgraded to an ASUS 7750 which works ok for me in my BE2c Interestingly only the very high-end and expensive graphics cards on sale here come with more than 1Gb ram. I can't afford any of them .... -

So how much longer do I have to go? I'd better get some practice in with the observer and his Lewis gun. Or will he shoot on my behalf? What would be the trick - go onto autopilot and then switch seats? -

I must say I am a bit confused now that we have two forums. Most of the activity seems to be over at SimHq now. But I do sign on to both every day to see what is going on My 4 sqn RFC pilot has almost made it to February 1915 with over 20 hours so far. But no opposition either ....
