  1. Expolsions upon impact...

Remember the rules of Hollywood.... 1) All films have a happy ending 2) All cars in accidents burst into flames (even if they go over a cliff into the sea) I suppose rule 2 applies to aircraft as well
  2. OT--Stalingrad question...

IIRC the invasion of Russia would have worked if it had started on time. But a lot of the German forces had to go and help Musso who was losing to the Greeks. Operation Barbarossa started a few weeks late and so they hadn't taken Moscow by the time the winter came. But taking Moscow wouldn't have won the war as Napoleon found out. So maybe it made no difference in the long run.
  3. Arrrgghh....Avangate!

Or, as in my case, my credit card account with the bank. I like PayPal because it doesn't mean I have to transmit my credit card no. I did that once only on registration over a secure line. If a US company (or Chinese for that matter) doesn't support PayPal I don't buy from them. Most do.
  4. Arrrgghh....Avangate!

I paid using PayPal USA which is linked to my South African Credit card. My PayPal account has no money in it. And I only had to give my credit card details once over a secure line.
  5. *Sigh*

OK guys, what sort of fps rate would you consider at low, medium and good rate? This depending on the graphics cards that are used...
  6. Question for our historians...

Here is an interesting discussion of exactly how the cross was changed on orders from the top. But nobody seems to know exacty why except a guess that it made German aircraft more recognizable from the ground - rather like the D-day stripes. http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/2001/10696-changes-concerning-german-aircraft-insignia.html
  7. *Sigh*

I have a decent CPU (AMD Phenom 965 @ 3.8Ghz) and 7Gb of memory (4Gb new, used to be 4 x 1 Gb, now 4 + 3 x 1Gb) BUT only an HD6450 1Gb graphics card. WOFF runs (with one Be2c) at 28-30 fps, but smoothly, with no stuttering or jagged lines. I'll keep on running WOFF with this setup as I can't afford a better graphics card now, but it seems ok to me
  8. Install Order

You have to give it the CFS3 DVD to install (as usual) and it runs it in a different folder (subdirectory) so the two do not even know about each other. You don't need to install CSF3 at all, just insert the DVD when required.
  9. Install Order

WOFF is a separate install and they don't fight with each other. You can have both - the csf3.exe file for WOFF is in a different folder than that for OFF. I know this because I couldn't get my TrackIR 3 to work with WOFF so reinstalled OFF to see if it worked there. It did. Now I am using the version 5.2.2 final software and TrackIR now works fine - I get the blue LED.
  10. No..No..NOOOOOOOO

Errrr... does that Snipe not have the markings of no 139 squadron which was a Bristol Fighter squadron in Italy? Barker won the VC in a Snipe, but that was back in France.
  11. WOFF is now available!

I know you cannot be rich from this. I have met Mark here in Joburg a couple of years ago, I have no problem in paying 60 US dollars for WOFF even though our exchange rate is now so horrible. I am still downloading WOFF and cannot wait to try it. Maybe there is a way of publicising WOFF more? But I would not know how to do this. Anyway, keep up the good work :-)
  12. WOFF is now available!

Mine says it has 2 days and 18 hours to go. ADSL is pretty slow (and pricey) here.
  13. It is interesting to read what Captain (RN) Eric 'Winkle' Brown had to say about the Me109 vs. the Spitfire. Remember he is a small person - he had to fly the Fw190 with a custom-made cushion. He found the Me to be claustrophobic and wondered what a large pilot would make of it. The major disadvantage of the Me (all marks) was the automatic slats that tended to deploy in turns causing what he calls 'aileron snatching' and ruining its ability as a gun platform. Don't take my word for it - read "Wings of the Luftwaffe" if you can get hold of it. I got my copy from the US Amazon. Published there by Airlife. Sorry, just noticed that 'pips' has obviously also read that book!
  14. Hi Olham, I have been too busy recently to fly OFF much but intend have more practice. The aircraft in my Avatar has changed from an FE2b to the Armstrong-Whitworth Argosy in which I flew all over the Far East in 1968-9. The photo was taken at Gan in the Maldives. I was not aircrew, but an engine fitter as was my father. He started on Vickers Vimy's back in 1922 the same aircraft that flew the Atlantic. He left the RAF in 1958 and I joined in 1966 serving until 1973. My main time in the RAF was spent at Wildenrath in Germany with the first NATO Harrier squadron, no 4. I loved it in Germany and in fact left the RAF because they wouldn't send me back there! I then went to Saudi on Frightenings and came to SA doing my last aircraft work in 1976. I do miss the aircraft technical business which was my first love but eventually got educated and then into computers. More or less retired now at age 65. The only problem I have with OFF is that I can only fly at night as there is too much light where my office and computer is for TrackIR. And often at night I have had enough of the computer. I do see that I am now in the Royal Air Force again. Thank you whoever changed that. Not that I have any objections to the USAF having wanted to join them at one time
  15. I lost my password and have spent ages trying to get a new one. This 'Capcha' software is supposed to fool computers and it certainly fools me I had to have quite a few goes to get the 'word' right - and of course it is not a word at all but a random collection of letters. I have had trouble on other web sites that use this program. Anyway, hello to you all - I just wanted to see if I got a medal. As I never got one in my 7 years in the RAF (no wars going on at that time) I wonder what I will get - if anything. Hmmmm. I see it says I am in the U.S. Air Force which is a lie....
  16. I may well be the oldest - I will be 64 on Christmas Day (if we are still allowed to call it that).
  17. Merry Christmas, Friends!

Happy Christmas to all of you. I am 64 today (like the Beatles's song) next year OAP!
  18. Well when I was 20 I was working on Vickers Varsites with Bristol Hercules engines - great fun, extremely oily and dirty, and then A-W Argosies, clean, reliable but not so much fun. So I suppose I am an old gentleman. Old, maybe, but don't know about the rest
  19. I notice that at the moment we have 158 views and only 15 replies. Ok a lot of the views can be people who have already voted, but it is a bit strange. I must also apologise for OT'ing my own T. Oh well, not to worry eh? Well if you Ohions (?) want to talk about how you talk, how am I to stop you? You all sounded completely understandable to me..
  20. Hi Mr Prop, well although I have a degree in linguistics I am good at spotting accents, but I found everyone in Ohio perfectly understandable - some of them spottted my ex-British (but now Seffrican) accent but it was never a problem. Yes, he works at Wilmington and it was a disaster for the local population when DHL pulled out. All the Eggs in one basket, I suppose. But it is a lovely area. As for the USAF museum we spent about 5 hours there but I could have wandered around for days and days. My wife who is 4'11" was very impressed by the B36 mainwheel and the B36 as a whole. Luckily she likes looking at aeroplanes otherwise we would have divorced long ago! She was immensely impressed by the B24 and wanted to take it home! All in all a fantastic museum. An aside.... We were staying in a hotel on the Kentucky side of the river in Cincinnati. I went out to get something from the 'minivan' (Ha!) and was wearing shorts and a T-shirt. It was very hot! On the way back in I met a guy in a business suit towing a suitcase. He said "How are you doing" and I replied "Fine, how are you". This is what I mean about people in that part of the world being pleasant. Normally nothing would be said at all. Unfortunately I don't think I will be able to visit the US again. The air tickets cost us a lot last year and last year the exchange rate was R6.5:1 US$ Now it is nearly 9 to the dollar. One thing I do know is that Delta is a cr@p airlline! But unfortunately we had to use them as the only direct flight to Detroit from Europe is via Amsterdam using Delta. Their aeroplanes are old and falling to bits and their stewardesses are older than me! (well maybe not quite) I shouldn't complain about that but their food is also awful. And the movies don't work etc....
  21. Hi Herr Prop-wasche I was in Ohio last year (my only ever trip to the US). Went to visit a friend who lives in Hillsboro and works at an airport close by that used to be USAF, then DHL and now is mostly unused. He is overhauling Boeing 777s (or 767s). We were trained together in the RAF 1966-8 and although I left the aircraft business years ago (1976) he is still in there. We went together to the USAF museum at Dayton, Ohio and I loved it! Actually I loved Ohio and Michigan, even Kentucky as we stayed over the river when in Cincinatti. The people were so pleasant it makes you wonder that we forriners get the wrong impression of the US only seeing (mostly) New York and LA and other big cities on the TV. Went on a boat trip up the Ohio river and loved it.
  22. Not to be confused with "Muff Diving"
  23. I remember him as a much younger man - with hair!
  24. Yes, you are right. But the RAF used Roman numerals when this aircraft was made, so it is a TR IX and not a TR9. The germans and the americans always used 'arabic' numerals so you can't have a Ju LII or a P LI
  25. Windows 8

Ah, but that's an online dictionary and I only believe in paper dictionaries Why else do you think that I am flying around in a BE2c getting shot down all the time when I could be in an F-15? Most computer science terms are illiteratisms - I like that word! I have had numerous fights on this subject with colleagues. But just to annoy everyone I refer to data in the plural
