Problem with modern weapons
MiG Master replied to Uhu's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Only time I've heard the QAAM acronym used is in Ace Combat: it was an uber-'winder in AC04 and damned near useless in AC5 and AC0. Where did you get the QAAM for TW games? -
So There I Was.....

I tried modding the ejected pilot in Fighter's Anthology to do the same thing. I could never get it to work... -
Logitech joystick 3d extreme
MiG Master replied to dsawan's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Ditto for mine. I've had my Logitech Wingman Extreme 3D Digital for 10 years. Worked like a charm up till yesterday when it gave up the ghost. For ten years of near constant use and abuse, I'm not complaining. One caveat with this stick is that the potentiometers (the devices that measure the stick's position) collect dirt over time, which will cause erratic performance. By carefully diassembling the stick and dipping the potentiometers in 91% rubbing alcohol (don't use anything else!), you can clean them up. This happened to me two times with the rudder twist on this stick, and the alcohol bath did the trick. -

Where to add aircraft/bort numbers in SF2
MiG Master posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I've downloaded MF's Soviet MiG-29 to SF2 and it works fine. However, the bort (aircraft) numbers don't show up. I know you add mods in Vista to the "Mods Folder" located at C:\Users\<username>\Saved Games\ThirdWire\StrikeFighters2\, but I don't know what folder the numbers should be located in. I can't find the folder location on TW's forums, either. Would they go in the Decals folder, or somewhere else? -
Where to add aircraft/bort numbers in SF2
MiG Master replied to MiG Master's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Ok, they're working now. Here's what I did: During the install, there was a separate "Decals" folder with some bort numbers in it. I simply added them to the \Objects\Decals folder. Some of the MiG-29C skins use these. For skin-specific numbers located in "d" folders, I created an aircraft folder under \Objects\Decals, then a skin folder, then dropped the "d" folder into the skin folder. So, for a path to the bort numbers for the MiG-29A of the 119th MIAP: \Objects\Decals\MiG-29A\119\d The 119's decals.ini needed a tweak; other skins' decals.ini files did not. [Decal001] MeshName=RightEngine DecalLevel=2 DecalFacing=RIGHT FilenameFormat=Mig-29A/sov2/d/rbn <======change to Mig-29A/119/d/rbn Position=0.100,-0.250 Rotation=0.0 Scale=1.3 DecalMaxLOD=3 [Decal002] MeshName=LeftEngine DecalLevel=2 DecalFacing=LEFT FilenameFormat=Mig-29A/sov2/d/rbn <======change to Mig-29A/119/d/rbn Position=0.100,-0.250 Rotation=0.0 Scale=1.3 DecalMaxLOD=3 And now my MiGs are numbered. Thank you both for your help. -

column5: Thanks for the tip! I think I might give that a try. Wrench: I'm not at home right now, but I did something similar to what you said to get decals in the "d" folders to work for my other MF aircraft. I didn't have to create a new decals folder but a new folder that matches the aircraft name, then dropped the decal folder into it. I'll have a look and see what I did. I think the MiG's numbers were pathed differently than the "d" folder decals. As for why the mod folders are where they are in Vista, I think I read somewhere on TW's website that it was supposed to simplify modding by keeping mods separate from the stock files. -
Strike Fighters 2 Europe
MiG Master replied to Gr.Viper's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Well, that seals the deal. There go another $20. Can't wait to try it with the Saitek HOTAS I'm getting! -

I'm digging the new RWRs, too! I haven't seen an RWR that can identify threats since Jane's F/A-18 (I've been out of the flight-sim loop for a while). -
Su-7 Bandits like a negative 2 G push over
MiG Master replied to zzHOOTERzz's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I know. It also breaks locks easily. At around 300ft. AGL, they'll lock you up but won't fire. I fly NOE anyways, it's one of my favorite things to do in flight sims. I'd just think it'd be a little more exciting if you had a bandit daring enough to follow you. Case in point about the AI, I was trying to gun down a MiG-17 in my F-8C at low altitude. I went vertical and eventually got on his tail. The MiG split-Sed to the deck in full burner and I followed it. I figured we both had just enough room to pull out safely. Once it went below around 400ft., it started to porpoise and dove into the drink. Had it just stayed with the split-S instead, it would have cleared the water easily. -
Su-7 Bandits like a negative 2 G push over
MiG Master replied to zzHOOTERzz's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
The autopilot and your wingies do that too in SF2/V at low altitudes. For whatever reason the AI is deathly afraid of flying less than 300ft. AGL. Slightly OT, but while playing a SEAD Instant Mission in A-7s, my flight was bounced by two Su-7s. Apparently, CAP is listed as a secondary mission in their .inis. They're fast and turn pretty well, but they don't last long before running out of fuel. I killed one and let the other go when it ran out of fuel; I still had AAA sites to bomb. -

I added a post TK made on the TW boards to the Knowledge Database about the locations of the SF2/V mod folders in Vista. I think he listed most of them. Can't wait for this one to come out! It'll be nice to have some modern jets to add to my stable without having to tweak .ini files (note: I am new at adding mods, so cut me a little slack, mmkay?). -
Your Nemesis...
MiG Master replied to Lt. James Cater's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Guns jamming in SF2. The M39, Mk.20, and some Russkie guns suck in this regard. I hate it when I have an enemy lined up perfectly, but if I so much as hint at turning my plane, the guns instantly jam: "Colt Mk.20 20mm cannon jammed!" "Colt Mk.20 20mm cannon jammed!" I've had a lot of potential kills slip away because my damned cannons jammed again and I'm out of missiles. It's messed up a strafing run or two as well, including once where I was in a duel with a ZU-23 (guess who won?). I've begun adapting my flying style with planes equipped with jam-prone cannons. I try to shoot only when I'm close to straight-and-level and in much shorter bursts, but I've often ended up Swiss-cheesed by the victim's wingman because of this. -
SF2/SF2V Knowledge Base
MiG Master replied to Dave's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - Knowledge Base
I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this or if it's been posted before (search comes up with no results for me), but I figured it would help other SF2/SF2V n00bz using Vista like me. I've never played a TW sim up till last week when I got SF2. Anywho, this post is from TK himself on the Third Wire forums and shows the default SF2 "Mods Folder" file structure. This is helpful when adding mods originally intended for earlier TW games. http://bbs.thirdwire.com/phpBB/viewtopic.p...mp;hilit=Sounds -
Flight stick or Keyboard?
MiG Master replied to i fight by 1's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Joystick. I have an old Logitech Wingman Extreme Digital 3D I still use. It's getting long in the tooth, however, as the potentiometer that measures the rudder twist is wonky, even after I've cleaned it. I have rudders mapped to the left/right arrow keys for now.
