  1. Werner Voss inaccuracy?

Thanks for the replies guys. I knew Voss was an intense and tremendously brave pilot, he must have really got in the zone after a kill. I imagine ground fire and even the men he shot down could have been plinking at him with sidearms, that would be enough for another couple passes. His final flight taking on 5 planes alone and damaging all of them has to be in the top 3 if not the top of all air to air combat. Hard to imagine the bravery and confidence he had in that DR1 to take them on.
  2. I just flew a mission in my Alb. DIII in 2/1917. I got lost and seperated from my flight in thick cloud cover at 9000ft, was getting vertigo inside the bank it was so thick. Came out the other side and there was a flight of 5 strutters about 1500 above me. Wingman #5 drifted out of the clouds no doubt lost too and as I attacked the strutters he joined me. (amazing AI) I shot 3 down and took some rounds in my engine and left wing. I put down at the nearest German air field white knuckled and actually survived. I defy another game to challenge that type of experience.
  3. I bumped up the flight density to medium for a new campaign I started to see the effect and there are definitely alot more enemy flights out there. What is the historical aspect of this setting in the workshop? Is the low setting the standard for realism? Thanks.
  4. Enemy flight density

I think I will keep it at low. Survivability in a DiD campaign is tough enough, running into 3 flights of 12 enemy fighters with 600 rounds on board will make it almost maniacal!
  5. Exposure for any flight sim is nice as the development of them has seem to really drop off. What I have read and heard about ROF is not very good. I personally feel that making people PAY for more aircraft is greedy and not fair when you do the initial software purchase. A later release of a mission pack, plane pack, etc and charging is fine, but releasing it with only a few planes is odd. The dynamic campaign is the key to a realistic and immersive flight sim, something else "the other" one cant touch.
  6. I tried a new career flying with Oswald Boelcke starting in 1915. I found flying the EIII to be a weird experience. In my first mission we engaged some Bristol Scouts, I shot one down after diving down and we were holding our own. I was doing pretty well managing energy in it then it started to fly sideways. The physics in the plane were all over the place and I was able to rotate 360 keeping the plane level just by applying full rudder without energy loss. Needless to say, I was shot down and think I will steer clear of the EIII for campaign for now lol.
  7. OT/ We Choose The Moon

Last night I saw an interesting special on the lander they sent to Saturn's moon Titan. It was amazing it took 7+years to get there, but more amazing was the still shots and data it sent back. The scientists involved with space exploration seem to firmly believe that the answers to the origins of life are out there. Apparently the atmosphere on Titan is forming its own types of molecular structures that are long strings similar to biological molecules that formed life forms here on Earth billions of years ago. If the exploration is stopped, that one thing they may stumble on would never be found. The cure for cancer? The answer to the origin of the Universe, and possibly indicators of its demise? Time will tell.
  8. I find the claim of the EIII's climbing like rockets to be hard to believe. All campaigns I have flown since I bought the game have been Allied during the time period that most adversaries are EIII's. They do seem to fight me alot in the vertical, they kind of BnZ, diving for speed and climbing until they lose alot and then winging over. I have never seen them rocket up, and alot of my kills on them have been catching them at the apex of their climb where many even appear to stall and I can dump lead into the cockpit with ease. Maybe you difficulty settings are low? Try some instant missions against the different types of aircraft and watch the tactics the AI use closely, you might be surprised. Hopefully you can find the pleasure most get out of this game, if not there are plenty of others out there. (good luck with that).
  9. OT/ We Choose The Moon

I know the topic has morphed a bit but I finally watched the playback on that site in its entirety. It really is astounding to see how complicated the stages were and the millions of things that could have gone wrong on the mechanical level (let alone the human one). Then to think three men were sitting inside those modules and going through all the phases, then returning to Earth safely. Truly mind boggling....they were some amazing pioneers.
  10. Are you a hunter or a shooter ?

I am a hunter, but sometimes I definitely get lured into being a shooter. I think in WW1 era planes you need to be extremely careful before you give up a height advantage. If you dive down and get into a turning fight even with even numbers, you can find yourself quickly outnumbered and unable to climb away. That leaves you way out on a limb.
  11. I am flying the N16 for Esc.38 in Sept. of 1916. I had two Fokker EIII on my last mission that went on my current balloon busting one. I got two more EIII's outside Reims and was seperated from my two wingmen in the furball. I began heading home which is only about 5 miles by my lonesome. As I was climbing and got just south of Argonne, I was jumped by 6 EIII of Jasta 6, 1 of which was an ace, Carl something? I turned and fired my last 20 rounds into my first attacker and began turning for life. My only option was a landing in a small clearing that looked like it was made by trees being split in half by arty. I set down in the field unscathed (amazingly) and am currently being buzzed by 6 angry Fokkers. While sitting in the field praying that they dont strafe me, one buzzed a little low and went into the trees when he tried to turn, it told me I shot it down! lol. Hopefully the cavalry will come or they will leave and I can make the jump home. I feel my landing was an act of desperation, but maybe cowardice? It was certain death if I hadnt landed. Either way this missions immersion was unreal and without a doubt the most I have had in any flight sim. Will let you know if I make it back safe!
  12. Unbelievable mission

Thanks for the reply bullet. I contemplated hitting escape and ending the mission, but thought it would not register as completed? I made a new pilot in the Esc. 38 at the same time though, 4 days into the campaign and 3 claims. Tons of Fokkers in the air makes for interesting, but hairy missions!
  13. Unbelievable mission

Had to work the night shift last night and 30 minutes before being due at work the Fokkers hadn't left. My airfield was about 6000k away and I tried to run the gauntlet through some trees and make a speedy getaway. The uneven ground just outside Allied lines was not forgiving. My plane rolled left before take off and that was the end of another promising career. :( I am a bit confused about DiD though. Is it possible to crash land with minor damage and not die? It seems I have had numerous attempts at rough landings that dont appear to be going that badly and the mission just exits and say my pilot died?
  14. Hello gents, I am having an odd problem. I made a new pilot with the RFC (last pilot was cleaned up with a shovel), the first mission was a transfer of the squad to a new airfield. I flew it the first time fine, got the mission success message, landed and ended. The second mission was the same exact thing, did it over again the same. Just went to fly mission number 3 and ANOTHER transfer to St. Lovie. Is this a bug or what?
  15. Field transfer mission repeating itself

Thanks for the prompt replies guys, that did the trick. Was starting to wonder if they didnt see me as fit to be a fighter pilot! S!
  16. To easy?

I just started too and was wondering about the difficulty. See my post from earlier today, I got jumped my two enemy aircraft and blown to bits while thinking about the difficulty. Cruel irony!
  17. S! all. I just received my copy of OFF two days ago and it has been great so far. Reminds me alot of Red Baron, a game I had tons of fun flying solo and doing the online "wars". I just flew my 5th mission as a Sgt in the 28th RFC on the Ypres front in 1917. I shot down two Pfalz. observation planes halfway to my recon target, and two Alb. DV from Jasta 6 about 3/4 of the way to target. I was stoked having 4 kills logged in one mission, but the rear gunner on the second Pfalz did a number on my control surfaces. I lost both wingmen and was doing the 19 minute recon solo. About 10 minutes into the 19 required I was cruising at about 9500ft nursing my damaged crate which needed full right rudder to fly straight. I was thinking "hey this campaign is pretty easy so far". Out of nowhere I got absolutely PEPPERED by two Alb DV right on my 6. While concentrating on keeping the crate flying to waypoints I committed the fatal error of becoming complacent and Jasta 6 got their revenge. It got weird though, I entered a flat spin and was seeing my doom and cursing the fact that I would lose this pilot with his 4 unclaimed kills in 1 mission when a purple message stated "goals complete" and I was put back into the debrief. It congratulated me on my 4 claims and put me back to enter another mission. In the replay when I got jumped it said my plane was unflyable over Saint Quentin and the mission ended. Was this save a bug or something in the settings for my campaign? I feel like I am cheating continuing on with this pilot in a DiD campaign. It never said I crashed, nothing just ended the mission. Please advise if this is common or something odd? Thanks. S!
