  1. I got cocky :-(

Reminds me of a saying from my early military career: "There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots."
  2. Tony-God Bless you. You are in my prayers.
  3. I'm having a problem getting Track IR to work with OFF. I previously had it working with OFF, then re-installed OFF after a hiatus. Track IR works by itself, but when I'm in OFF, I'm not getting any response from it. I've checked the Track IR forums, and haven't seen any solution to my problem. I have confirmed that Track IR5 is showing up in my device manager, so that is not it. Does anyone have any bright ideas on possible solutions? I'm running Win 7.
  4. Track IR issue

Thanks for the responses. I'll give them a try this weekend, and let you know how it goes
  5. I think it must be FIFI. She is due in Dane County/Madison WI. http://www.airpowersquadron.org/#!madison-wi/c1122 Javito-You live in that area, don't you?
  6. B-29 just flew over my house

I just uploaded some video of the aircraft to Youtube, for those that are interested. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRFm3kS73y4
  7. I believe that is the SPAD that is at the USAF Museum at Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. Great Museum if you ever get a chance to visit it.
  8. Bloody great Russian...tanks?

I would think that the ground pressure from those two big wheels would have it bog down a lot.

  10. OT: Fixing Lunch

I would hate to see what you do to your enemies.....
  11. OT: Music

"Fields of France" by Al Stewart: His flying jacket still has her perfume Memories of the night Play across his mind High above the fields of France A single biplane in a clear blue sky 1917, no enemy was seen High above the fields of France Oh she looks But there's nothing to see Still she looks Saying come back to me [ Lyrics from: http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/a/al_stewart/fields_of_france.html ] He tells her just remember me this way Fore here am I more true Than anything I do High above the fields of France Oh she looks Though he'll never come back And the letter that came Was bordered in black She'll find somebody else But not forget Leaving her regrets Like vapour trails of jets High above the fields of France and "Immelman Turn" also by Al Stewart: I always was the reckless kind, I do what I must do I put the danger out of mind, and go on I joined the barnstorm fliers back in 1922 And above those dusty farms , we put a shw on Fly, fly to the western sky Where the fog bank shifts and the danger lies Why, why would you never learn That you won't come back from the Immelman Turn? Fly, fly to the red sunrise Where the cloudbanks shift under copper skies Why, why would you never learn That you won't come back from the Immelman Turn? From aboard a Curtiss Jenny, oh, you see things differently And the farm boys wait for joyrides in the clearing I went out walking on the wing in 1923 And above the engine noise I heard them cheering repeat chorus You won't come back from the Immelman Turn Why, why, why? You won't come back from the Immelman Turn Why, why, why? There never was a one like you Who knew that way to fly But you won't come back from the Immelman Turn Why, why, why? The frost was on your aieleron's, and the wind was in your hair When you went into the climb I saw you laughing When the engine stalls and you start to spin You won't get out of there And a hush comes on the crowd as you go falling
  12. Devil Dogs of the Air

In the 1925-46 period "VJ" was fixed wing Utility or General Utility Squadrons. DUring the 1950's it was used to designate photographic or weather reconnaisance squadrons. See http://www.history.navy.mil/download/dictnry/appendx4.pdf Best, Steve Lohr
  13. Devil Dogs of the Air

One minor quibble. The USS SARATOGA (CV-3) wasn't sunk in WWII. It was sunk later at the at Bikini Atoll Atomic bomb tests. She survived the first blast ( an air burst) but was sunk by the second underwater blast detonated 500 yards (500 m) from the carrier. I think it says something about the workmanship that after surviving WWII, it took two A-bombs, and no crew onboard to conduct damage control to finally sink the SARATOGA. Steve Lohr ( former crewmember of her successor, USS SARTOGA (CV-60))
  14. In "War Between the States" the player is in the role of Abraham Lincoln or Jefferson Davis. The player is involved with more of the strategic direction of the war, (and to a lesser extent the operational execution) of the conflict, rather than tactical execution. For instance, the player creates the type of brigades that will form his armies, (infantry, artillery, cavalry and heavy artillery) and uses these brigades to create divisions, corps and armies. He also determines which officers will lead each of these units. He can influence when and how the units move, but once in contact with enemy forces, the combat is resolved by the computer. A video overview of the game is here: http://www.matrixgames.com/products/357/videos/Gary.Grigsby's.War.Between.The.States/#War For more tactcal games, look at the "American Civiil War Battles" series by John Tiller, which has been around for over a decade. See http://www.johntille...WarBattles.html and http://www.matrixgames.com/products/319/details/John.Tiller's.Battleground.Civil.War. An interesting game, which tries to combine the strategic level with the tactical level is "Forge of Freedom." See http://www.matrixgam...l.War.1861-1865. However, in my opinion the War between the States game does a better job of recreating the strategic level, and the John Tiller series is better at the tactical.
  15. Oldham-I personally believe Gary Grigsby's game "War Between the States" is the best strategic level game on the Civil War because it tries to address some of the political and economic factors that were so crucial in the war. You can find some information on it at: http://www.matrixgames.com/products/357/details/Gary.Grigsby's.War.Between.The.States Best, Steve
  16. OT My Favourite War Film

To slightly modify this thread to include bad war movies I like anyway: Kelley's Heros-Donald Sutherland's portrayal of a Hippie tanker is priceless. In 28 years of military service, I constantly heard references to this role Stripes-Using Manfred Mann's "Do wah Diddie" as a Jodie. Worth the price of admission
  17. OT My Favourite War Film

No particular order: 12 o'clock High-Excellent study of leadership Das Boot Battle of Britain Winds of War/War and Remberance (TV miniseries). Robert Michum's role as Pug Henry was my personal ideal of how a US Navy Officer should look and act. The Blue Max Glory-One writer noted that this movie makes the link between liberty and the willingness to fight for it. An apt description Bridge over the River Kwai-Another leadership movie The Man who Would be King (Okay, not a real war movie per se, but still worth seeing) The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (again, not a real war movie, but the discussion of comraderie, brotherhood and morality is directly related to war) Zulu-Military discipline, organization, training and leadership against impossible odds Tora, Tora, Tora-Good History Saving Private Ryan-Great movie. So good, I have only watched it twice, since I have to mentally prepare myself for it. Band of Brothers. See "Saving Private Ryan" Henry Vth (either Branaugh's or Olivier. Both very good) Gettysburg Best Years of our Lives-the costs of war, played by actors who paid it. Galiipoli
  18. old planes

    In terms of "classic" or "near classic" aircraft I've flown in, mostly as a passenger: B-707 B-747 T-34B and C T-2 DC-3 UH-1 SH-3 C-130 CH-47 CH-53 Mi-17 Mi-26 Biggest memory? The C-130, as it was friggin' cold.....
  19. OT: Steam Hacked....

Thanks for the reply. Also, a belated (by one day) Happy USMC Birthday to you and NS13Jarhead
  20. OT: Steam Hacked....

Bullethead-Why do you dislike STEAM? Just curious. I use them, and have had no problems, but this latest incident has me concerned.
  21. OT Radio Listening

One other idea-Many public libraries have audio books. You can check out what you want and listen to them on a CD player.
  22. OT Radio Listening

I don't know of any radio programs, but there are some pretty good historical podcasts. One that comes to mind is "The History of Rome," but there are also others on the Napolonic Wars, military history, etc.
  23. OT: Into the deep Blue

Olham-My condolences to you and your friend's family for your loss.
  24. Javito-I would be interested. I haven't picked it up yet, but have the others in the series. If you want, I'll get it, and we can start a game this weekend.
  25. Interesting. According to the site, Böhme was in his late 30's when he was killed. That is remarkably old for a fighter pilot at the time.
