Sweet! I'm flying in August '17 right now. Can I integrate this without interrupting my current campaign? Edit: Nevermind, just read the included readme in the download. Cheers Bletchley, I'm off to finish August 14 using the new mod

OT: What else are you playing right now besides OFF?
Javito1986 replied to Javito1986's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Still at it eh? How far long are you? I left off on my Baldur's Gate Trilogy playthrough in January about 60% of the way through Shadows of Amn. Still waiting to get back to it, have to finish it before I'll allow myself to play Fallout New Vegas, Dragon Age 2, or any new RPG really... -

You ever just zone out while in the air?
Javito1986 posted a topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I just got to spend a few days in the hospital because I decided to play OFF and brainstorm about work related topics at the same time. Here I am, flying about, minding my own business and thinking of some research I'm working on. Then I remember to look behind me, OMG ALBATROS, rat-tat-tat rat-tat-tat, I'm hit and in a spin and crash. "You have been hospitalized for x days...". Whoo lucky dice roll! Morale of the story: If you want to play a game that doesn't require you to pay attention, go play XBox Live multiplayer. Do not use your 70-hr pilot. Edit: You know what really grinds my gears is that Boche probably went home and told all his buddies "Hahahaa, you guys won't believe this noob I just boom & zoomed. He didn't even see me!" Edit 2: HPW's new main gun mod works Edit 3: Next time I want to unwind and play something that doesn't require thought commitment, I'll load up Red Orchestra/Darkest Hour. Tuning out of OFF is a recipe for tears. -

Here's my current workshop settings: The RSS standard for AI gun range is 'Easy', and this is the only realm in which I divert from RSS because, as you can see, I fly with Normal on. Reason being that with Main Guns set to 'less accurate' I don't like the idea of limiting the AI's gunnery too much, and I agree with what Bullethead said a while back about exaggerating the inaccuracy of these planes. But at the same time I just got made swiss freaking cheese by a DV firing from above and behind at 300 meters. Least I think it was meters. Whatever that numerical measurement next to the object name when you have labels turned on. In the heat of the moment I expressed frustration at his accuracy. (I believe the exact words were "HOW THE F*** ARE YOU ABLE TO HIT ME YOU GERMAN SON OF A *****! GRAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!) But in retrospect I'm not sure if the shot was that hard to make. I was below him after all, and going slower as I was just coming out of a turn, and I hadn't seen him. Now, I've made similar diving attacks and have set fire to enemy machines under very similar circumstances, but I never fire from as far away as he did. And he pummeled me, I was hit over and over all around the kite's fuselage and tail. That said, he didn't hit anything vital. No meat or metal, I remained in the air at full engine power and was able to make it home, though I couldn't make much altitude and she was sluggish as all hell (this is an SE5 by the way). Still, it troubles me! He was excruciatingly accurate from that range, and frankly with the amount of bullets I was hit with I am amazed I didn't light on fire right then and there. And I know I would never, ever, ever shoot from that distance. I would land hits, sure, but only a few, no way I could bring the pain the way he did with me. Still, as I said, he hit nothing vital which is expected. I dunno. Thinking about changing to Easy AI Gun Range for the duration of this campaign, lest I lose my favorite pilot under potentially 'gamey' circumstances. Or maybe I just need to keep my damn eyes open next time. What do you all think? EDIT: Ignore the 'hard ground accuracy', I'd just finished balloon busting when I took this workshop and always crank it up for those.

Interesting. Y'know, some of the best maps in Red Orchestra / Darkest Hour are based on trench warfare. I'd like there to be more of it, it's extremely intense. One of my favorite maps is Courland in RO, where the Germans are defending a very thin line in '45 against a massive Russian attack. It's always a desperate defense for the German side, trying like hell to keep their MG42s in action and praying a random artillery shell doesn't splatter you. How this will work in single player i really don't know.

Well consider me blown away. I've had OFF a year and haven't seen this before. Attacking German ground positions at Ypres on August 10, 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele. Except this time they weren't dug into their trenches safely, hell no! They were out on the ground advancing on British trenches on the other side of No Man's Land, and they had freaking tanks backing them up and emplaced MG positions. Artillery blowing up everywhere, it was wild. I got scared for our British infantry and had our SE5s hang around much longer than they should have, bombing and strafing as much as humanly possible to force them back. Felt like something straight out of The Blue Max. I took the camera down to their level and watched our SE5s roaring in from the German soldier POV... gosh it's loud down there! Gunfire and explosions galore. So glad I'm not in the infantry.

HPW, as I note in the thread I just started, I just christened your new mod! Got bounced by an Albatros again like I did at the start of this thread, but this time he fired from 100m or less and shot me down fair and square. Was using Easy AI Gun Range but -normal- main gun accuracy with your mod installed. He got in close and sent me down with two bursts. Can't complain, he did it right Thanks for fixing this issue! No more robo Huns, that was the most legitimate bounce as I've seen yet in OFF.

There's really not much of a framerate dip either. It's not like the infantry are exactingly modeled or anything, bounding for cover and providing overwatch and the like! I did get some fps hits just from being down so low near all the artillery fire and explosions, at times my entire screen was filled with ground smoke. I would really like to be able to hang around and see how those battles play out after a while but those MGs can just as easily be turned on you and one hit to the fuel tank is all she wrote. It'd be interesting to have to land in the middle of that. I once forced down a DFW and he made a crash landing in the middle of an area being targeted by artillery. Last i saw he disappeared into the smoke being kicked up by the 'splosions. Wish i'd hung around to see what became of him but the DIII fighters that had been escorting him were being most distasteful. Looks like a tank. The kind I'm not sure of. It should tell if you if you turn on labels. When i was over Passchendaele the German A67 tanks were clearly designated.

do you chaps realize how freaking hard it is to make a virtual environment like that? Just having 'passable' rays of sunlight is incredibly difficult. This is a work of brilliance right here

Let's compare shall we? Here's what CMFS 3 terrain looks like: Now go look at P4 terrain. I say again. OMFG!!

This. Works best as you fly away after a strafing run, you can really see a lot down there as your SE5 flies by.

My mistake! I thought the OFF Manager said 500lb but now that I double checked it says 25lb. Oh my, I don't know how I've been misreading that all this time.
-
That's good info uncle. I didn't know that, will keep in mind once I start looking into getting my own TrackIR system.
-
There's a few I recommend: 1) HPW's damage model. He also said he's about to release a new mod for gun accuracy of scouts and observers, might be out by the time you get your OFF CD. 2) Olham's ViewUI file for nicer, less obtrusive labels http://combatace.com...__1#entry480590 3) Louvert's new OFF medals 4) Creaghorn's Sound Tweaks & modifications to tracers and smoke effects. 5) Hmm. What am I missing? Feel like there's more! 6) Survival In The Air settings are highly recommended. Visit the forum dedicated to it for details. 7) I use hat-switch instead of TrackIR. Leaves some blindspots but it's workable. I'm thinking of getting a webcam and experimenting with FreeTrack. TrackIR is definitely, definitely preferable. Also you're going to want a way to use your rudders comfortably. I have them set to the shoulder buttons on the Sidewinder Freestyle (http://www.amazon.co...01590073&sr=8-2) I've flown with for eleven years now. Not that I recommend it to you, it's positively ancient but I'm used to it, have used it since I got my first flight sim! Left & Right rudder are crucial, you need them or you won't be able to turn fast enough to avoid the Hun in the sun before he swats you.

I'll be sure to have FRAPS loaded up next time I do ground attack at Ypres. Honestly I wasn't expecting to see anything like that, figured it would be a routine ground attack mission so once I saw what was actually happening down there I was too busy. The Germans were pretty close to our trench lines, they'd actually advanced quite far and I was concerned they'd overrun our defenses there. So I swooped in and sent the whole squadron into action, and didn't think to take screenshots until later. It helps to turn labels on. I was using Olham's ViewUI file (http://combatace.com/topic/62903-smaller-tac-softer-label-colours/page__p__480590__hl__viewui+olham__fromsearch__1?do=findComment&comment=480590) to keep them unobtrusive. So then I saw "German troops attacking", "German A7V Tank", etc and when I zoomed in, sure enough they were out in the open in the middle of a storm of artillery and MG fire. I suppose they were mounting a counterattack. Artillery was blasting everywhere, it was dangerous for our SE5s to get down so low. Once we dropped our 500lbers we had to get down real low to strafe those troops. I shot up a whole line of them. Couldn't get those tanks but them's the breaks. Feel bad for the PBI that has to live down in that hell day in day out. Really brings home the advantage of flying home to a cush aerodrome some miles off the Line and sleeping in a cozy officer's lodging with hot food, warm showers, and clean sheets.

I was flying around in a two-seater again and got smashed (again). This time when I crashed the mission ended and just took me back to the time before the mission started, as if none of it happened. Resurrection! I've noticed this happen sometimes during my Casey Joyce RFC campaign if I land at my field and come to a complete stop I lose all mission progress. 'tis why I land and Escape>End Flight before my kite stops rolling. I just double checked and I have the Workshop Settings 'Auto Exit CFS3' and 'Auto Exit Mission' turned off, hence I'm not sure why it'd be doing this? I suppose it's nice to have a do-over for my German two-seater fellow though. It's literally like traveling back in time 1 hour before his death and getting a chance to prevent it ;-)

Hurry hurry! Each day you delay makes it more likely my pilot will never live to see your mod. Flying is dangerous you know

Is that an actual photograph? Obviously it is. I always get blown away when I see pics of WW1 in color. Black & White makes everything seem so remote, but seeing it in color makes it all so... alive!

I like watching Hellshade's RoF footage on youtube. Some talented fellow on youtube also used RoF to make stellar movies about Werner Voss and Red Baron's last flights, highly recommended. This isn't really the place for me to say how I feel about the sim itself though. Frankly I'm glad WW1 sims are being made at all, and we're fortunate to have both OFF and RoF. I do think, and most RoFers will agree, that Flanders Fields is geared much moreso to the WW1 aviation historians, the people who grew up hearing and reading about Werner Voss taking on Britain's elite fighter squadron single handed. My friends and I were reading and studying the Dicta Boelcke when I was 12 years old because we found it quite applicable to the space fighter pilot themed MUSH (ancestor of modern MMOs) we played on. When I traveled abroad I'd log online to the Aerodrome and read about the aces, or read online copies of The Red Fighter Pilot and Flying the Fighting Circus. RoF appeals more to people who like hardcore flight sims. Flight Simulator X, IL-2, anything with meticulous detailing of flight models. We all belong to the category "flight sim enthusiasts" but differ in the specifics of what we look for. It's like this. I bought IL-2 when it came out in 2001, and that same year I bought Rowan's Battle of Britain. And I played BoB a hell of a lot more, and also read the excellent BoB history book The Most Dangerous Enemy and used to spend time on the BoB Historical Society website reading day to day accounts of the battle. My friend'd give me a hard time. He'd say the damage model in BoB wasn't as good as IL-2s, which it wasn't, and that IL-2s planes were more accurate. Which they probably were. But I wasn't in it for the flight models like he was, I was in it for the experience and IL-2s small scale, scripted dogfights didn't ignite my imagination the way BoB did. That's pretty much how I view OFF and ROF. That same friend btw plays Rise of Flight today, which is very fitting. We both dig flight sims but we differ in what exactly we look for in them.

Mission doesn't end properly?
Javito1986 replied to Javito1986's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Welp, I can't fix it! Not without starting a whole new campaign that is. It's definitely a byproduct of transferred my pilot files over after I did a full reinstall of OFF two weeks ago owing to that "no cd" error I was getting. I'm too far along in this campaign to start over, I'll just have to live with it until I die. It'll only happen if I fail to get a "goals succeeded" message, so I'll just try really hard to complete my mission objectives like a good soldier -
Mission doesn't end properly?
Javito1986 replied to Javito1986's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I don't remember what time it was when I wrote that. Stayed out late last night! Anyhoo, the problem isn't one of the mods. I'm about 99% certain it's related to the transfer of pilot files after a reinstall. I just ran 3 missions: 1) 1 mission as Casey Joyce August 9 with dossier/logs/claims transferred. Suffered the crash at mission end. 2) 1 mission as "Casey Joyce" with the original Joyce's dossier/logs/claims overwritten over this one's. Suffered crash at mission end. 3) 1 mission as "Casey Joyce" with no dossier/claims/log transfer. No crash, mission ended properly. Did any of the other chaps who had this issue transfer pilot files from an old installation?
