Wings of Prey DRM - REMOVED by Devs -
Javito1986 replied to Hellshade's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I downloaded WoP demo. Ran fine and was fun! I couldn't find my joystick though so I had to fly around with the mouse. Inadvertently sawed the wing off a Heinkel with my own wing (love the damage model), but had a great time. I hope Cliffs of Dover comes out with a demo too so I can toy with it and make sure it runs on my machine. -
This has happened to me, and I made a post about it a few months ago http://combatace.com/topic/60618-mutinous-squadmates/

Hmm... it hasn't occurred to me that there might be a WoP demo I could try out and see how it runs on my rig. I suppose I'll download it myself and give it a test. This computer is capable of some remarkable feats sometimes, I was sure it wouldn't run Dragon Age 2 but when I tried the demo last week it ran like a charm. I'm still following through with my commitment not to buy anything new until I clear my own gaming schedule... unless OFF Phase 4 is released! Now if you'll excuse me, I suddenly have an urge to take a Fokker Triplane out for a spin. -
OT: Crazy Busy, But Still Here
Javito1986 replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I can relate Lou. I've been so busy myself I haven't actually flown a new sortie in my RFC campaign for several weeks now, though I browse this forum frequently and contribute when I have something decent to say. I am feeling 'the itch' though, and long to take to the skies once more. However, I must admit I may be procrastinating in recognition that I've become rusty during my time away and am liable to kill my pilot on take off! -

My current rig would die trying to run any of these I'm afraid. But I agree they look great. My heart is definitely in WW1 sims, but WW2 is definitely up there as well, right up through Korea. MiG Alley, love dogfighting in those Sabres. Once missiles are invented though my interest takes a nose dive. Really though, I want to see more damn Pacific theater games. My favorite WW2 plane is the Zero (Spitfire close second) and I never get to fly it. -

Cliffs of Dover sure looks pretty, no doubt. I wonder about the scale and atmosphere though? It'd be pretty tough to beat Rowan's BoB or the A2A sequel for me. It's those epic, massive dogfights involving huge numbers of aircraft that do it for me. I haven't played in over a year now but I still have nightmares about breaking through the clouds and seeing a formation of 1,000 German planes ahead, like a swarm of steel locusts. -

I can't fathom why there aren't more Pacific flight sims. I used to have such a blast flying the Zero in CFS2. Too bad about that paper armor and death trap of a fuel tank but... well, it doesn't matter if you're nimble enough to avoid those .50cals ;-). I remember when I read Saburo Sakai's memoir "Samurai!" when I was 14. Ten years now! To this day I'm amazed at how skilled he and some of those pilots he flew with were. Nishizawa was like a damn poet of the air, the precision of his flying was unbelievable, like that Zero was just an extension of his body. And Sakai nursing his plane hundreds upon hundreds of miles back to Rabaul with a .50 in his eye? Then, with just one-eye in 1944 he manages to single handedly outfly and evade 15+ Hellcats over Iwo Jima without a scratch? Oh man -

What a lovely ceremony. It's melancholic certainly, yet it makes me happy just the same. A great long life, wonderful send-off, and passing of the torch. -
OT: Next Generation of Unreal 3 game engine
Javito1986 replied to Hellshade's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Ohh it's an update to the Devkit is it? I've messed around with Unreal 3's devkit, it's fun stuff. Wish I had more time to devote to it but all my design time is focused on XNA at the moment. I'll get back to Unreal 3 in the future. -
OT: Next Generation of Unreal 3 game engine
Javito1986 replied to Hellshade's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Well, go back a decade to Halo in 2001. Look how far game engines have come! It's amazing to think what this stuff will look like in 2021. I'm actually really looking forward to advances in computer processing power. Bigger scale, better A.I. Take any of the top Unreal 3 shooters right now... Gears of War! Gears of War is hella fun, hella intense... but the scale is limited isn't it? Three squadmates tops, always the same small group of respawning enemies, etc. What I'm really looking forward to is expanding that, opening up the action to a truly epic scale, with independent AI actors fighting it out all around you. That's going to be a real thing of beauty. -
To be totally honest with you, I think Hell's Angels looks much much better than Red Baron. That Red Baron action sequence just bothers me, it feels horribly wrong, and Carrick's right they fly like jets. There's so much appeal to seeing REAL biplanes in Hell's Angel that Red Baron lacks.

Last U.S. World War 1 veteran is dead...

So I've had very very little time for any simming the past day or so on account of fun little events happening here in Madison, where the governor has effectively declared war on organized labor and massive civil unrest is ongoing. As a result virtually all of my typically not political friends have politicized and are "Cairo-ing" up the whole place. Last night we camped the State capitol, today 20,000 protesters converged on the downtown area. National media has slowly started picking up the story and as of about an hour ago the President himself made a little statement on our behalf. Things are happening quite quickly and my time for gaming has dropped to zero! I'm actually completely unsure how in the world I'm supposed to study for the quiz I have tomorrow and write two 1.5 page essays. Kinda banking on school shutting down to be honest, they shut down today on account of virtually all teachers going on strike. Fun times for all!

The Governor exempted firefighters and policemen from his assault on organized labor and collective bargaining, either to create a divide among the people or pay their unions back for their support of his campaign. Therefore, firefighters and police are NOT going to be effected at all. Yesterday and again today, off-duty firefighters and police took to the streets to show their disdain for the Governor and their solidarity with the people. Note the people shouting 'thank you'. The police when they're on-duty are extraordinary professional, but extremely nice. Earlier today I, without really noticing, stepped into a 'restricted' area of the capitol. An officer stopped me, informed me the area was off limits, and directed me in the right direction. "Oh, my bad officer," I said, as I'd just been lost in my thoughts and was wandering without paying attention. He smiled, and in the absolute friendliest tone of voice you've ever heard responded "Not a problem! Solidarity, citizen". Solidarity being the 'watchword' of this movement. My heart just swelled when that happened. SEVENTY THOUSAND people descended on the capitol today. We're practically living there. It's always been public property and 'our' house but now we're taking that literally. At the capitol we've set up garbage collection, recycling, a community food bank, water supplies, lost and found, an information services station, and more. First people came from all over the city, then state, and now COUNTRY to give us supplies. Food, blankets, you name it. I have photographs of signs hanging inside the capitol saying: "MICHIGAN STANDS WITH MADISON" "NEW YORK STANDS WITH MADISON" "PENNSYLVANIA STANDS WITH MADISON. Outside there are thousands chanting 24/7 "Show me what democracy looks like" "This is what democracy looks like!". Cars drive by and people use their horns to go along with the tune. Honestly, I swear to god it is the absolute most moving and emotional spectacle I have ever witnessed. -

So, the vote was scheduled for today but the ENTIRE Democrat half of the legislature plus two Republicans essentially went on strike. They've left the state entirely and are in hiding. Governor tried to mobilize the state police to find them but they refused. Since there's now no quorum present there can't be any rushed vote, which gives the opposition more time to mobilize. The Republicans only announced this last Friday really, their goal was to rush the bill through as fast as possible and make it law before anyone could do anything. That plan's pretty much bust now. Interesting atmosphere here. Signs saying "SOLIDARITY" are springing up all over the city. It's anyone's guess what happens next really. Edit: The AWOL WI minority leader contacted CNN, informing the national media that the Democratic senators are in hiding in different places outside of Wisconsin. In order for them to return to WI and participate in the vote he made a "list of demands" for the Governor, primarily that the provision of the budget bill that eliminates the provision eliminating collective bargaining. -
God I loved MiG Alley. Rowan was one of the great flight sim developers. That spring campaign was so hard though. I remember I'd get to about mid February and have to quit because I had no planes left. But I had a great time with it, I especially loved flying flak suppression in an F-86 Sabre over Pyongyang while other squadrons were keeping MiGs off the B-52s at altitudes unheard of to my little Royal Flying Corps pilot in OFF

Home now. Ahh what a long day. My girl - friend is testifying before the Senate right now, watching her on the TV. And yea, I'm a senior in college studying Public Policy & Administration. So I suppose this is a 'practical' lesson? News just came down that 17 school districts are shutting down tomorrow in protest. Never seen anything like this! -
Yes indeed! They all work on Windows 7. GoG is easily my favorite site for games ever.

That is like one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. I want to do the same thing now! EDIT: My Game folder is relatively sparse at the moment but here's my little slice of retro heaven:

I strongly advise you to get HitR. I did, wasn't disappointed. Best damn flight simming I've had since RB3D.

It all makes sense now! Y'know, to be totally honest the thought occurred to me back when Olham first mentioned his mother's knee, but I suppressed it. The doctor advised me about that sort of talk after that bloody satellite wouldn't stop beaming me messages in summer '06. -
OT: What's your 2011 game "Must Have" list?
Javito1986 replied to Hellshade's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Ohhh that looks great too. I already wrote down Evochron Mercenary and Starpoint Gemini for future buying (still holding to my 'not buy any new games until finish what I have' mantra). Bullethead, which X game do you recommend I play first? The most recent, X3 Terran Conflict, or should I go all the way back to the original? EDIT: Nevermind, i discovered the 'Superbox' on Steam. Funny I've never in my life heard of either of the three space sims you guys have mentioned today. Suddenly I feel richer! -

That's fair enough. I really was WAY too young to experience the DOS age. By the time I discovered Wing Commander it was already 1996,and I played it on my SNES anyhow. I never actually owned any PC games until I got Windows 98 for Christmas '99. I have tinkered quite a bit with DOSBox though to get the previously mentioned games running on it. DOS to me has always been a bit of a mystifying interface. And no Von Paulus, I haven't actually heard of either of those titles until just this moment. I did look them up though and they look brilliant. Particularly Evochron Mercenary, there's gameplay footage on its website that just looks bloody marvelous. I take it they're indie space sims?
