The Barmy OFFers Club: Have you what it takes to be one of the daft, the touched, the Barmy?

I've never loved grammar as much as I do right now at this very moment. -

I say just keep it as is. If anyone ever asks, just tell them the name is part of the tradition and continuity of the series. -
Rise of Flight is a great game. Amazing attention to detail in the flight model and the multiplayer is great. I do like multiplayer quite a bit in flight sims; the more hardcore the realism setting, the better. I'm the guy flying IL-2 Cliffs of Dover with ATAG, which may well be the most accurate "you are there" feel to WW2 air combat that's ever been done in a virtual setting. Communicating and coordinating with other pilots in the unfriendly skies is awesome, all the better when there are no indicators for diddly squat and you have to eyeball everything. RoF can be the same way, although communicating over Teamspeak is rather awkward/frowned upon considering pilots back then didn't have the luxury! So for multiplayer purposes, RoF's great and I'm looking forward to the dev's new IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad game. Hoping it takes Cliffs of Dover's authenticity and improves on it further, although I'm worried it won't have CoD's complex engine management. Also, DCS is great. But I digress. If you love multiplayer and appreciate truly detailed flight modeling, RoF's pretty awesome. That said, I'm from the old breed Red Baron 3D school, and I like nothing better than immersing myself in a dynamic WW1 campaign and watch my pilot's trials and tribulations as he attempts to survive the war. If I had to take just one flight sim with me to a desert island, it would be OFF/WOFF. As an aside, I think my dream game is a massive multiplayer online game that's EXACTLY like OFF except everyone is a real pilot. Permadeath, 1916-1918 air war, each day recreated meticulously but nevertheless dynamic (Bloody April may or may not occur, or maybe it becomes Bloody March/June/whatever). Every two years the servers would reset themselves and it'd start all over again, but it would keep track of how many times the Axis or Allies win the war. Add my HOTAS and a slightly less bulky version of Oculus Rift and I'd basically never leave the PC again.

"Moya" is ready for WOFF. I think. Windows 7 64bit i5-2500k @ 4.5Ghz GTX 770 2GB 8GB Corsair Ram 750W PSU Asus P8P67 MoBo 1xTB WD Black In addition, I have a 240GB Intel SSD and a 3TB Seagate Barracuda on the way. Figuring I'll store the entire contents of my life for the next decade or so on the 4TB drives and use the SSD for my operating system and important games (WOFF and Steam titles). I'm a whee bit worried that my CPU is getting on in years, but thus far she's done well and the i5-2500k is known for having a long lifespan. Also have a X52 HOTAS and TrackIR5, but I believe my TR5 is dodgy and I may need to get a new one. May have to resort to hat switching, at least at first. It's not optimal, but I survived 99% of OFF via hat switching. How's everyone else doing? If you need upgrades, now's the time to discuss options!

Yea this was hilarious. I've missed Lou's write-ups! "Jawohl, unt velcome to hell, Herr Dummkopf." If anyone even remembers that reference, they're indeed Barmy. And have been here too long. -
A very good new Feature in WOFF
Javito1986 replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
The fun in Flanders Fields, and Red Baron before it, is in amassing a monument of failed pilot careers and histories in your dossier. Immersion is the best way to go about that IMO! -
This intrigues me. What device do you use in particular? I googled "full hd flatscreen" and came up with quite a lot of options.

A very good new Feature in WOFF
Javito1986 replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
It's such a seemingly simple thing and yet I suspect it'll make WOFF all the more immersive. In Red Baron 3D I automatically opted to fly in the Red Baron's squadron. Every. Single. Campaign. And while I know I'll be able to do that in WOFF if I so choose, I suspect I'll be leaving that consideration for my superiors to decide. Transferring from 2-seater squadrons to fighter squadrons would be pretty nice though. -

You're Welcome! ("WW1" podcast for resident Barmies)
Javito1986 posted a topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Linksies: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/dan-carlins-hardcore-history/id173001861 Just wanted to let you guys know that Dan Carlin, the host of the Hardcore History show on iTunes and one and someone who is in my Top 10 list of most awesome living Americans, has started his long awaited World War 1 series "Blueprint for Armageddon." In case you don't know, DC operates the best history podcast out there, and has created magnificent audiobooks/series' about the Punic Wars, the WW2 Eastern Front, fall of the Roman Republic, the Mongol invasions, etc. He usually puts out one (outstanding) episode every two months, and the most recent episodes (Roman Republic and on) are available for free on iTunes, while older episodes are also available for purchase. I really wouldn't pimp it to you fellows if I didn't think you'd love it as much as I do. Blueprint for Armageddon I is a three hour episode covering the assassination of the Archduke, July Crisis and the invasion of Belgium; expect part II in January/February. p.s. As an aside, a lot of you fellows would probably really like episode 42 "Logical Insanity" that basically covers the entire history of air power in WW1/WW2. -
WINGS Over Flanders Fields - Development Progress

Day 1 purchase for me. And I just got a Saitek X52 + new TrackIR as well. I'm ready when you are OBD! -
Photos found inside an old French army 3D camera: http://io9.com/rare-3d-camera-found-containing-photos-from-wwi-669397198 And for fun, since I know we have a lot of history buffs in general, I found these neat pictures of Napoleonic war veterans posing in uniform. I'd sure hate to have gone toe to toe with 1000 Old Guard soldiers back in the day: http://www.armchairgeneral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72496

For Olham: A Glimpse at RB3D
Javito1986 replied to CaptSopwith's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I had such great times with RB3D. My dad bought me my first gaming PC in 2000 when I was 13, and I played RB3D religiously for years. Those were good days and I remember vividly all my doomed fliers and their great histories. Had one German pilot who was on Richtofen's wing in early 1917 when Richtofen was shot down and killed. Gasp! So my pilot became the leader of Jasta 11, painted his Triplane all black, and became the Black Baron, the leading German ace! Total history rewrite, was pretty great. He got killed in '18 by some Tommies #FistShake Had an American in one squad where one of the pilots coincidentally shared the same last name as my pilot. So I imagined they were brothers. Then my pilot's brother was killed by Herman Goering. Spent the whole rest of the war hunting for Goering's Fokker D.VII to get revenge, Captain Ahab style. Finally found him in October 1918 and single handedly engaged his entire squadron of Fokker D.VIIs. Just when I was about to get my revenge, I was shot down and killed. Epic fight though, pure Werner Voss style. And many others. I doubt I'll ever return to RB3D now; Over Flanders Fields replaced it entirely for me. But I own it on GOG and it's got a dear place in my heart. Thanks for the post Sopwith! EDIT: Meant he became the leader of Jasta 11, not Jasta 1. Silly typo making me appear historically ignorant. -
Dear oh Dear... We Need WOFF
Javito1986 replied to CaptSopwith's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Yep, I'm still here. I don't post so often, but I do check in periodically. I'm not big on the other forum myself. I made an account there once upon a time, but only posted once. Much prefer CA, and with the exception of UncleAl I know I can find all you chaps here. -
Heya Mudwasp, good of you to remember my girl's name! No Chaser Mk-I yet I'm afraid. I've made a number of upgrades to Moya this summer, including a GTX 770, new mechanical keyboard (cherry blue of course) and a new Sennheiser PC363D headset to replace my the same crappy Turtle Beach ones I'd been using since my first college job years ago. In addition, I also had to buy plane tickets for myself and some $300 dresses for my fiancee's Blythe doll collection. And I've still got her birthday on Aug. 7 bearing down on me! In short, while I'm not "low on funds" persay, I thought it prudent to spend some time working and stabilizing my finances before I spend more on my system. However, rest assured it's #1 on the list and will be coming in September/October. It'll be absolutely glorious.

Hey guys, good to hear from you all. Hope things are good! I've been spending time with my fiancee in Los Angeles since graduating college in December and have been working as a Legal Assistant here. Saving up a nest egg to move back to Wisconsin (probably Milwaukee) in '14 and bring her and her dogs with. And as always, I'm studying the LSAT in my free time to prepare for my (eventual) entry into law school. Just got back from a two-week (family) business trip to Central America; it was a good time. I've been playing a lot of Planetside 2 and Mechwarrior Online this year, but I haven't had too much free time over the summer. The last game I played was in June when I spent an entire weekend playing through The Last of Us, which was amazing and I do highly recommend it. This week I've purchased Bioshock Infinite, Dishonored, Tomb Raider and Just Cause 2 off of the summer Steam sale. I'm not sure when I'll actually have a chance to dive into any of them, but it's nice to add to my ever increasing backlog. I miss Flanders Fields and would like to play it soon. I still have my old RAF Casey Joyce campaign to complete before WOFF comes out!

Computer Hardware and OFF/WOFF (split from screenshots thread)
Javito1986 replied to Bullethead's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I have a CM Hyper Cooler 212. It's great, the day I installed it I noticed a significant difference in my temps across the board. I know a lot of people like water cooling, but I just can't get my head around the idea of having water anywhere near my hardware. My buddy's GTX 680 FTW was fried in December thanks to his leaky cooling, so I'm too paranoid to ever go that route. So you have a Chaser Mk-I? I bet it's fantastic. For me, it was between that and the Haf X but the Mk-I's aesthetic design matches perfectly with Moya's "blue" theme. The Haf X is just too red for me. Can't wait to get my new chassis, I'm expecting serious cooling improvements over my current midtower case. -

Javito1986 replied to Bullethead's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Oh, are we talking hardware now? Count me in! My rig is my pride and joy, I built her with my own little hands in October 2011. She's my first full-blown gaming computer, since I built her once I was finally old enough to work and afford my own high-end gear. Her name is Moya. Asus p67 mobo I5-2500k @ 4.7ghz with the help of my 3rd party cooler GTX 560 Ti 8GB Corsair ram Seagate HD 1TB I have a nice E-3Lue gaming mouse for her, and I just purchased a CM Storm Trigger mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Blue switches. Typing up my copywriting assignments is such a blast. This month I intend to purchase either a 770 or 780 card, depending on the price. It's not that I'm cheap, it's just that if I'm going to drop more than $700 on a graphics card, it should be for a Titan. But since I don't want a Titan, I'll get the 770 if the 780 is too stupidly expensive. Also I'm going to but a new chassis. Thermaltake Chaser Mk-I. Moya is going to be looking gorgeous in that thing. My fiancée doesn't find my obsession odd at all. Her big hobby is designer Blythe dolls from Asia that cost between $1000 and $5000 each. And she has seven, six of which I bought her. Sometimes when I'm cleaning Moya I can feel her about to say something condescending, and I just quick remind her of her absurdly expensive doll collection to quiet her down. At those moments, I smile on the inside. Point is, I love my computer with a capital L. -

I upgraded my rig for OFF back in 2011. It's currently serving with distinction on the distant battlefields of Planetside 2. This month I'll almost certainly purchase one of the new Nvidia cards to replace my 560 Ti. Either a 770 or 780 should do MORE than fine with WOFF. Game and enjoy life chaps. One of these days WOFF is going to come out, then we won't have time to play anything else. -
Thought I'd pass this along. Sounds very fun for mobile gamers! Should release on the iOS App Store in a couple days. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-05-03-ace-patrol-preview-sid-meier-takes-to-the-skies

OFF2 DEVELOPMENT Screenshots
Javito1986 replied to Polovski's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
My, you lot are a buncha rascals! I know it's been a couple years, but let's get real here. For me, there's a straight line between Wings of Glory, Red Baron 3D and OFF. What do they all have in common? There was years in between them! The forums are quieter these days, certainly. Myself, I graduated out of college, got a job and am studying the law school exam in my spare time. Sopwith has his work. Hellshade's got his work (though I keep up with your YouTube vids!). Olham does his thing. Tranquilo's getting better. Etc etc. But think about it, this community is not going to fracture because we are the hardcore WW1 flight sim community. I've been at this since RB3D, most of you have been biplane enthusiasts since before I was born. Louvert has an entire damn French aviator's uniform in his house, and I believe every single book ever written on the subject in their original editions going back to 1919. That man has his work to do, but trust me, he's ain't going anywhere. Neither am I, neither are any of you fellows. WOFF's going to release when the Devs finish it. They're the crazier about this stuff than any of us after all. I haven't played OFF since 2011, but it's not because I'm not interested anymore. Lord of the Rings is my all-time favorite book, but I haven't read it since '08. Believe me, when the Hobbit released in December I was ass-in-movie-chair on Day 1. When WOFF releases I'll mail my credit card to Pov and let him have his way with it. 'til then I'll keep working, doing my thing, play games in other genres (I'm big into Planetside and Mechwarrior right now), and hang out on the OFF forums periodically. There's my .02! TL;DR, the community's quiet but fine. No cause for concern. When I have a little more time on my hands I'll reinstall OFF, seems my exe file got corrupted sometime in the last year or so. I do miss it! -
Feels like it's been a long time since I saw you around here. Great to have you back, Tranquilo!

Howdy ho fellow OFFers! I was assigned to write an article about eight must-have flight sim controllers. So as I'm sitting there brainstorming, I thought I'd come over here and ask for you fine gentlemen's opinion. What do you all think? Joysticks? TrackIR? Thruster pedals? Input is most welcome!
