I'm sure Creaghorn's recent career has bumped the average hours of all of us up quite a ways though -
Help on "contextualizing" this great game
Javito1986 replied to stefnuts's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Wikipedia is good for fast information on many topics, but I found their section on World War 1 a bit lacking. You can go on there and in an hour become an absolute EXPERT on the Western Front 1944-45 but beyond that... It's like the History Channel really. Wiki is written mostly by Americans and we have a very specific perspective of 20th century history: "Hitler, Hitler, Normandy invasion, and more Hitler" -
I have it set to inform me whenever it goes up for sale on Ebay, so even if I don't luck out this time I'm sure I'll get it eventually... just gotta keep at it

Funny you should mention this, just this morning a new bid for it went live on Ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290558765733&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_500wt_1043). I've got it on my watch list and will be monitoring. Here's hoping!

Were you Wing Commander or X-Wing?
Javito1986 replied to UK_Widowmaker's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
TIE Fighter is still the best all around. Freespace 2 is the best engine, and Wing Commander is my overall favorite. Hard to top Wing Commander's character development over the first four games. Very few of them survive all the way from the first game to the last but whether they live or not they're all well written and defined personalities. -

For sure, let me know what you think of it. I love it myself, I played the first ep when it was released in 2004 and spent the next five years eagerly awaiting each new installment. You gentlemen are lucky you get to play it all in one go. -

If you play it do your best all the way through since outcomes and actions in earlier episodes do influence later ones a lot. Try to stay on the winning path but by all means play "the losing path" too because it's even better in some ways than the winning path, and you see a lot of things and encounter canon characters that otherwise don't show up in the winning path. Plus my favorite mission in the whole game takes place on the ep 5 losing path. "Winning" and "losing" path is a bit of a misnomer though, since you can still lose on the winning path and win on the losing path. There's really three different outcomes to Standoff: 1) The Confederation wins the Battle of Earth decisively 2) Pyrrhic Confederation victory (this is canon) 3) Confederation loses the battle (but the war goes on) Point is, please don't be afraid to try out the alternate episodes 3/4/5 because they are marvelous. -

I'm still running Vista so I'm not sure. Here's a link to their forum (http://www.crius.net...p?s=&forumid=14) where you could ask if you run into a tech problem. My intuition is that it works fine in Win7 since the forum is pretty active and I would think there'd be a Win7 sticky or more posts asking for help with it if there was a problem. -

I've been looking forward to Saga since its announcement ten years ago. They're in final testing now finally and it honestly looks like they'll be ready to release this year. Then there's also this one too: http://standoff.solsector.net/. Standoff is free, already completed, with a complex branching mission tree, fully voice acted cast of characters and large epic fleet battles set during the Battle of Earth. I can vouch for it as being absolutely incredible. They've even got the original Admiral Tolwyn voice actor from 1991 to show up as Tolwyn again in a pivotal moment. Whee! Absolute 100% must play for any Wing Commander fan. If it's not obvious Wing Commander is my favorite game of all time. I first played it on the SNES in 1996 and the games have been a part of my life in one way or another ever since. That said I don't neglect the greatness that is X-Wing and especially TIE Fighter. My favorite of the 90s space sims though was Freespace 2, which I see as the culmination of the genre. The original FS2 was in itself amazing, but the game engine is the star of the show since it can be used to do so much... i.e. just have a look at The Babylon Project, Battlestar Galactica: Diaspora, and Wing Commander Saga. -
I'm resurrecting this epic thread because I have been one busy little bee lately. I have a pretty hot wife but really this is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. RETRO GLORY COMMENCE! More will be added soon as I download and play them.

OT: What else are you playing right now besides OFF?
Javito1986 posted a topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Hullo guys. Got Crysis 2 in the mail from Gamefly about three days ago, was thinking of popping it into the 360 and giving it a whirl tonight. My recent "near OFF-death experience" reminded me that I need something I can play half-heartedly, while I unwind and think about other things. Can't think about other things in OFF, good way to die. Now, I know, the PC version of Crysis 2 is probably better but my comp won't handle it as pretty as I'd like it to be, and I'll hold off on that until I get a new Alienware computer in June. At which point I'll also be locked and loaded for P4 by the way. So what's everyone else up to in their non-OFF time? -
Co-director of Restrepo killed today in Misrata. His last tweet from yesterday: "In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. Indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO."

Haha. Was he just not holding it right? I remember when I was 7 my father let me shoot a .357 Sig Sauer loaded with one round only. I'd been used to shooting .22s so the recoil caught me by surprise. Literally! Smacked myself in the face with the barrel, hurt like hell but a good way to learn to hold the damn things properly. -

So You Really Want To Know What Air Combat Was Like?

4 died in total, and Hughes himself was badly injured filming the an aerial sequence the other pilots refused to attempt because they knew the plane would crash. -
So You Really Want To Know What Air Combat Was Like?
Javito1986 replied to Pips's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
I just made a post here a few weeks ago posting clips from Hell's Angels. Marvelous aerial sequences, watching them sends a chill down your spine because you realize that is exactly what it looked like back then. Nobody has seen dogfights like that since, nor will they again, so Hell's Angels to my knowledge is the only way to see a taste of what those planes really looked like when they were mixing it up in the empty blue back in 1918. I mean, come on. Hughes put the camera up in the real Fokker DVII, SE5s, and Camels themselves and filmed them fighting from the cockpit. No CGI, no matter how good it is, will ever be able to top that. -

That aircraft you're building just blew my freaking mind. I'm not even out of college yet and my only experience with such things is flight sims so I have to ask, where in the world would one even begin learning to build such a thing? -
