Server?
PG_Raptor posted a topic in IL-2 Series / Pacific Fighters / Cliffs of Dover: General Discussion
Does anyone know if it is possible to have a dedicated server for PF? I might need to set one up to get some interest for my squad... -
look cool chief! good luck with it!

Wow... What a weird season. I just got done watching K-State vs Iowa State. Iowa State scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to win the game. That brings K-State to 4-7 on the season (how pathetic!), Nebraska at 5-5, and if Iowa state beats Mizzou, they will be North champions Now how the heck did that happen?

Yeah, I was getting some error like "IE could not open this web page, operation aborted"

I guess I should update... when I originally posted that, I thought Handy_Randy was Randy Pitchford, the developer. However, I've seen some of that guys other posts, and there is NO WAY that is the developer, unless he feels like he needs to screw his project and company over. So take that with a grain of salt.

For all of those new to Biohaz, welcome! I would like to invite all of you to visit the Folding@Home forum way down at the bottom of the page. There are many interesting forums down there, so please don't just stick to the pub and the LOMAC forum. Become an active member of the community, and you will be glad you did! I would also like to invite join in our effort to make the top 100 in folding. You can find out more about folding here. In short, it uses your extra CPU power not used by other programs to help find cures for many diseases. There used to be some promotional videos, but I don't know where they're at anymore... Someone still have those? Anyways, please join us!

Wow... WWI... I didn't think there was anybody left. They'd have to be at least 104 years old by now. Wow

Are there any new updates worth mentioning? I read that the damage model is getting worked on (if not finished). Any other news?

I'm sure some of you have seen this before, but I found it going through a pile of papers today, and it made me chuckle, so I thought i'd share it with ya And I got this when my professor passed it out during class (accidentally, which made it even more funny)

F4F Screenshots

I just got done flying a mission in PF, and took some screenshots. Enjoy! On the carrier deck getting ready to go... And one of my formation on the way to intercept. I'm the second one in. In the midst of the engagement, my lead decided to fly straight for a while, effectively giving the Zero's a line up on me, and I got some good shots through my right wing. What really annoyed me, though was that the added drag kept me from going all that fast, and my lead kept yelling at me for not keeping up :threaten: Oh well, I finally got back to the carrier, and landed, albeit hard. -

Oh, and by the way, I'm running PF on a laptop, 1.4 GHz Centrino, 512 Mb PC2700 RAM, and integrated graphics (which has access to up to 64 Mb of RAM). Even with this lower end system, I have all the settings on high-excellent, and the game runs great. the fps meter says I'm getting only 9 fps or so, but I know it's a lot higher than that, it's absolutly smooth. The only time I've seen it not smooth is when A. smoke is loading (once the textures are loaded it runs just fine) B. With all 32 planes going in a dogfight at once, but just for a few seconds. Great game! -
Fs9 update question from Navychief.
PG_Raptor replied to navychief's topic in Microsoft Flight Simulator
Hmm, odd... I dunno about why it messed up. Are you sure it didn't install correctly? Can you still fly the sim with all of your stuff? If nothing anyone else says helps you, I would say you have to reinstall it. Make sure you backup. If you know anything about how the addon files work, do what I've done: I've created a seperate backup file that I keep a copy of all of my addons in, as if they were installed. That way, if I need to reinstall anything, all I have to do is copy the backup file into my main FS2004 folder, and that automatically puts all the addon files in the right place, organized the way I want them. It makes it a lot easier to find stuff too. -
That would take a lot of time, and really wouldn't be worth the effort. However, I do remember from, I think it was Jetfighter III (I know, the king of realism ), that there was a splash screen that showed a pic of the plane in the hanger getting ready to go. I would think, however, with todays technology, that perhaps instead of a splash screen, you could play a movie showing the players aircraft being towed onto the elevator, moved up, and set on to the catipult (or into position for VTOL in the case of the harrier) they could start from there? That would still give the feeling of "getting ready to go," would save time, and would be something more interesting to look at than just some spiffy splash screen while everything is loading.

Aircraft Performance
PG_Raptor posted a topic in IL-2 Series / Pacific Fighters / Cliffs of Dover: General Discussion
Hey guys, I just thought of something. What with all the planes in PF, it would take one person a long time to figure out the advantages/disadvantages to each plane. So when you've flown/flown against a plane, post what you noticed about its performance. P-40 = I've always liked the rugged look of the P-40, but after flying it in PF, I'm not so sure it's as good as I imagined. It seems to stall really easily in sharp turns. One really needs to learn to ease into maneuvers. If you don't, you'll find yourself in the dirt very quickly. I havn't really tinkered much with the plane, so I can't really talk about it's total fighting ability though. P-38 = Again, I havn't spent much time with this plane. However, in the little time I did spend with it, I learned that this plane is VERY fast. Two engines make a difference :D However, I didn't think it was that good in a turning battle, as it also stalls pretty fast with abrupt inputs. F4F-3 = Again, havn't spent too much time with this one. It did seem to be a good turning fighter though, and rather agile. However, I don't think it's got the power to fight vertically. I could be wrong, most of the time I spent with it I didn't realize that I had complex engine managment on, and thus the cowl flaps were closed :blush2: Oh well, you might have better luck. F4U-1C = I really like this plane. It's decently agile on the horizontal, though not the best. It's strength comes with it's power. Unlike some of these other planes, it's got the guts to keep a fight vertical, which can be a huge advantage against some lighter, more agile aircraft. It's also decently fast, so I've been able to outrun some Zeros once I got too wounded to keep yanking with them. Oh, and it's armament is awsome, the cannons are very powerful. Tears a Zero to shreads on the first pass :D B-25 = Gunner positions are fin :D A6M2 = I already knew that this plane was very light, and very agile. And it's modeled into PF well. Fighting against it in my Corsair, I was luckily able to keep the fight vertical, which I already knew the Zero was pretty weak. However, I was not aware that the Zero could climb very fast, although not sustained. Makes sense, I just hadn't thought of it before. So yeah, almost lost a battle because of that :D I know you guys have experience with several of the other planes. Put up what you know and have found! -
I know you're getting tired of me asking about the shop but I'm just wondering, does cafepress make case badges? That would be cool to add to the list of stuff we can buy.

I heard about this a while ago, and I just found this mouse. Sounds like a good idea, but I don't think I'd go for it personally. Just thought some of you might find this interesting MonsterGecko PistolMouse FPS

Awesome

Yeah, see, that's my problem, I'm concentrating too much on one plane, the F4U-1C. I could probably start kicking some butt in that plane. But put me in a P-40, and you'll see me stall out many times before I learn to handle it right. Put me in a F4F-3, and you'll see me try to go into a vertical battle without the necessary power. I've tried the P-38, man is that thing fast, but it also stall's really easily, at least from what I've seen of it, it's not a turning fighter. So we'll see how it all ends up. Someday I'll master all of them, but for now, I'm pleased with just the F4U-1C :D -
First P40 Impresions
PG_Raptor replied to Fates's topic in IL-2 Series / Pacific Fighters / Cliffs of Dover: General Discussion
Yeah, it took me a while before I could take off too. The P-40 also stalls really easily, you really gotta learn to coax it, though it's not too bad once you do. -

Man, I am so out of practice... All I've been doing for the past several days is doing 1 on 1 dogfights. I've gotten back into the sqing of things, I think, so I've been trying to find different planes capabilities and such. There's so many planes to figure out though... I've mainly only used the F-4 Corsair, but I've touched on the hellcat a little too. But man, I'm having fun doing it. I'm gonna have to practice a LOT, but I think in the end it will pay off.
