Beta 20 ... And Counting
Growler67 replied to GhostDog's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
F-117 by MicroProse. Gameplay was at an alltime high eventhough graphics weren't what they are today. I had a blast with that one and emmersion was there as well. Granted, realism suffered (you can't land one on a carrier and it has no internal gun in RL) but it was from box to disc drive a complete product. -
Beta 20 ... And Counting
Growler67 replied to GhostDog's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
Continuing support has always been a pledge as far as I can recall. I've seen Stormin' post those very words a couple of times at least. I appreciate that, however it manifests itself. -
My fondest memory of the good Doctors show has got to be "FishHeads". Great stuff he has aired over the years. Thanx for the link.

Beta 21 Now ...
Growler67 replied to finiteless's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
Here is the latest: posted Fri June 04 2004 11:35 AM Almost there. We have tested Beta 21 and are generally very pleased. A major problem with memory and crashes in multiplayer has been eliminated. No additional serious problems have been found so far. It would have been a mistake to release the patch without addressing this problem. We want to continue test over the weekend since the earliest that Ubi Soft can begin the process of submitting a Release Candidate for distribution is Tuesday. That gives us a few days more to make sure. Ubi Soft has conducted their review of the V1.02 patch and there are only a few very minor problems that Ubi Soft has asked us to address. Therefore, we will attempt to fix them. They are very minor: 1. In the new Mission Scoring window the scores are not reset properly if the user flys the same mission again without reloading that mission. Very minor but since it is a new feature we want it to work properly. 2. Pilot names are incorrect in a few training missions. A simple fix using the Mission Editor will solve this problem. Again, a very minor problem. I don't believe that either of these problems are going to require extensive code changes. We will continue to test Beta 21 over the weekend and then we expect Beta 22 with the two issues above addressed. If Beat 22 passes muster on Monday then we will submit it as our Release Candidate. Again, a word of caution: If we find a serious problem over the weekend with 21 or if Beta 22 has problems on Monday then we will have to have another version and another round of testing. After we submit the Release Candidate to Ubi Soft they will then place it on their servers for distribution and distribute it to the various mirror sites. Eagle has no control over this process so I can't say how long it will take. I hope that they are able to turn things around right away but it will depend upon their schedule and their workload. I have lots of confidence that we are there, but as the past has demonstrated, anything can happen. I still remain very optimistic. Have a good weekend. Cheers, Carl My fingers are still crossed. -
Reported by the Sun 18 May 2004: OUTNUMBERED British soldiers killed 35 Iraqi attackers in the Army’s first bayonet charge since the Falklands War 22 years ago. The fearless Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders stormed rebel positions after being ambushed and pinned down. Despite being outnumbered five to one, they suffered only three minor wounds in the hand-to-hand fighting near the city of Amara. The battle erupted after Land Rovers carrying 20 Argylls came under attack on a highway. After radioing for back-up, they fixed bayonets and charged at 100 rebels using tactics learned in drills. When the fighting ended bodies lay all over the highway — and more were floating in a nearby river. Nine rebels were captured. An Army spokesman said: “This was an intense engagement.” The last bayonet charge was by the Scots Guards and the Paras against Argentinian positions. **************************************************************** Similar type of story here, in case no one's heard it: It was a year ago on the march into Baghdad. Brian Chontosh was a platoon leader rolling up Highway 1 in a humvee. When all hell broke loose. Ambush city. The young Marines were being cut to ribbons. Mortars, machine guns, rocket propelled grenades. And the kid out of Churchville was in charge. It was do or die and it was up to him. So he moved to the side of his column, looking for a way to lead his men to safety. As he tried to poke a hole through the Iraqi line his humvee came under direct enemy machine gun fire. It was fish in a barrel and the Marines were the fish. And Brian Chontosh gave the order to attack. He told his driver to floor the humvee directly at the machine gun emplacement that was firing at them. And he had the guy on top with the .50 cal unload on them. Within moments there were Iraqis slumped across the machine gun and Chontosh was still advancing, ordering his driver now to take the humvee directly into the Iraqi trench that was attacking his Marines. Over into the battlement the humvee went and out the door Brian Chontosh bailed, carrying an M16 and a Beretta and 228 years of Marine Corps pride. And he ran down the trench. With its mortars and riflemen, machineguns and grenadiers. And he killed them all. He fought with the M16 until it was out of ammo. Then he fought with the Beretta until it was out of ammo. Then he picked up a dead man's AK47 and fought with that until it was out of ammo. Then he picked up another dead man's AK47 and fought with that until it was out of ammo. At one point he even fired a discarded Iraqi RPG into an enemy cluster, sending attackers flying with its grenade explosion. When he was done Brian Chontosh had cleared 200 yards of entrenched Iraqis from his platoon's flank. He had killed more than 20 and wounded at least as many more. Don't care how you slice this one up (pun intended), courage and bravery are just a couple of words that come to mind. I met a few Brit Paras in the first Gulf War, very unassuming chaps. Very proffessional to boot. I had the utmost respect for them, the French Legionaires and all the other multi-national coalition folk I came across. This latest shows what happens to a bunch of punks when they pick on some blokes with BIG BRASS BALLS THE SIZE OF CANTALOPES!!! <SALUTE>!! BTW, Brian Chontosh was awarded the Navy Cross for the above mentioned action taken. <SALUTE>!!

Pretty retarded. They keep saying that they are meeting or exceeding their enlistment and retention goals. Do you ever get the feeling they aren't telling you all of the truth?

No Problemo. I recall (back when I was in the Army) it was harder than heck to get anything. My first award recommendation was for an ARCOM (Army Commendation Medal) and it wasn't from my unit. It came from 2/17 Cav at Ft Campbell for running a FARP as a PFC, in marginal weather, alone for 12 hours and working over 400 operations in a 12 hour period. Maintaining ATC services while losing 2 out of my 3 generators. It was downgraded by my Battallion because it being my first award, it shouldn't be an ARCOM. I was awarded an AAM (Army Achievment Medal) instead. I also saw what you are mentioning in the Gulf War (1). I saw people getting awards for: driving supplies to and from LOG (Logistical) bases, providing hot water for showers, and other such nonsence. While these people were performing vital operations and improving morale, I also feel they were doing their jobs. Nothing above and beyond, nothing exemplary or over the top that would warrant ARCOM's or MSM (Meritorious Service Medal) or some of the other inflated awards. That cheapened and soured me hard against my faith in fairness in the Army. I got out after returning to Germany in '91 (my time was up anyway, just had no stomach to reenlist). I see on the news a lot of Bronze Stars going out. Before I judge, I would have to find out the details of the incident(s) the individual was nominated for such award. I'm not going to say they are or aren't justified, or that the numbers and types of awards are unfairly inflated. However, the appearance of all the awards and types is a little troubling IMO. I hope they are all justified and fairly awarded to deserving persons. IMO that isn't always the reality, people looking to get decorated so they can get a promotion, do less work and then retire. I've seen it too often. Hope I answered what you were asking about.

Lomac V1.02 Patch Update
Growler67 replied to SlickWili's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
Not again over here. Weasle and Bard are having a civil discussion and ruggbutt has to chime in with jabs. I realize that you too have your opinions, but IMO you are making this discussion sour. The discussion is bringing valid points on both sides. It is also not enlightening anyone on things that aren't already know. Why can't you just leave well enough alone sometimes? -
I'm not too sure, but the reason for those being rescinded is that those are awards for military personnel. Contractors are not eligible for such decorations, regardless of what actions they perform. Those conditions are specified in the Army Regulations (and I'd bet the appropriate regs for the other banches of service as well).

Have you considered upgrading to XP? It handles higher memory management MUCH better than 98. That may be part of your problem.

Skinning Question
Growler67 replied to fantumfan2003's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
Perhaps you should look in the skinning forum. -
Yes, overall a great show. The testing and everything is very thorough, I especially like the ones with the Smilodon (Sabre Tooth) and the Shark/Crocodile comparison. The Lion/Tiger got subjective at the end with the virtual battle. Maybe in generalizing their hypothisis would have been proved. However, if pitting two individual animals ifn the same scenario, each one would draw from their personal experiences and the result may have been too close to call. Just my two cents.

In ALL fairness, regardless of which team you were cheering for.............it was an Excellent game!! Both teams going up and down, hard along the boards, etc. Props to both clubs for a great series.

Your Aircraft Of Choice
Growler67 replied to SlickWili's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
I prefer the A-10, but when dragged into an A2A mission, I will go with the MiG-29. The next patch has the F-15 mostly fixed, so that may change. -

Try the Thrustmaster website and their forum. I don't own one myself, but I'll bet you can find the answer and a lot more there. -
A-10 Radar Altimeter....
Growler67 replied to Mugs's topic in Digital Combat Simulator Series General Discussion
No Problem Dice. I was using what I had for information (based on experience) regarding this piece of equipment. That has been Rotory-winged aircraft. They tend not to exceed the 45 degree plane (much), and as they are not equiped with lateral sensors, the above is mostly true. [...whispers...(pilots sometimes like to test the limits of their airframes, but you probably know that)]. I suppose that even in a fixed-wing platform that once the 45 is pushed (terrain notwithstanding) the indications aren't exactly accurate for that brief time period, either. Anyway, no harm, no foul.
