The number of planes you have installed in FE slows loading on startup somewhat, not much. If you have long load times for start up and getting into missions, it could be due to setting the "Shadows" graphics option too high. I do have a good computer, it takes 10 secs to load game, 5 secs to load mission (maybe 10 if many planes), with all graphics maxed out except shadows on medium - high is a killer.

Mike, just installed Spad 12, modded gundata files and all is okay for me. Here are the gundata files for you to try if you like, and it works with my current FMs (just added 37mm gun). GUNDATA.zip If you are using the Spad 12 in your game with my FMs, I'd also suggest that you copy the AI stuff, aidata and skill levels near beginning of file, from my Spad7 180.
-
OlPaint, my Morane FM uses a Lewis. If other Lewis guns are working this should to. If you have modded it to use the Hotchkiss (its in the data ini, but commented out), you need to add the Hotchkiss to the soundlist file, I think. I just tried it in my game, with both lewis and Hotchkiss, and it works fine, so maybe you could try this one, put in your "Flight" directory. Backup your old one first. SOUNDLIST.zip Mike, its not trivial, hardly fun if you can't hear the gun sound. My guess is its something to do with the gundata files. But then again, if the gun actually fires, that seems strange as well. Let me know if you checked this file and seems ok. If still a problem I'll have a go installing Spad 12 and update the files to see if it works. If it does I'll post the files here.

"Unfortunately, they neglected the rest of the sim. Terrain bordered on poor for the day, AI was almost nonexistent, and mission/campaign options were anemic." You may have the wrong impression about RoF, thats not the case with this game. In fact terrain, AI and missions/campaigns are excellent. It will have many more flyables, certainly AI. There must be 30 or so models, many with cockpits that have been seen over time. See http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2678372/1.html. The Fokker Dr1 for example was probably the first developed, featured in many videos some two years ago - neoqb could indeed have many just waiting on the shelves so to speak. RoF does not really seem to have any basic game weaknesses (including immersion), other then it can be tweaked/improved over time like all games, and of course additional content after release. Doesn't sound like the game you describe, Back 2 Baghdad. And RB2 was a disaster on release.
-
Absolutely. Maybe in terms of content, even several months. But you'll still have to pay for flyables I'd guess. It depends on definition of great. I understand your point, yet based on the quality, IMHO, its not only great as the most advanced flight sim currently available, its a miracle that as a ww1 flight sim development of that quality it ever saw the light of day.

Is available here http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=9240. Its in the ww1 Flight Model section (it includes an FM Hinchinbrooke's L63 ). Many thanks to all the modders who allowed me to use and/or modify their work. Whats in it ======= An FM for Hinchinbrooke's L63 Zeppelin. Mainly as AI, but flyable. Two 1916 campaigns by me. Simple, mainly so you can fly a number of planes in the 1916 period in a campaign. Update to previous ones I did for Oct 2007 version. These campaigns include Zeppelins (as AI), tanks (yeah, I know, but there is a shortage of targets), infantry. Both use Cambrai terrain. Two great "must have" 1917 campaigns by Charles of the A-team - Bloody April and Cambrai. Modded to include newer plane models, quite a few heavy bombers and some other things. Both use Flanders terrain (despite Cambrai Campaign name). Mobile AAA guns by Gr.Viper. Armed balloons by warlordATF. MGs based on work by Tailspin in Cambrai terrain. 37mm guns based on work by Tailspin and P10ppy, and models by A-team and P10ppy, in Cambrai and Flanders terrains. Modded balloons to be somewhat tougher to bring down, and modded some structures so they easier to destroy - warehouses and bridges, these are targets for the Cambrai Campaigns. AAA is more effective. There are also modded soundfile, weaponsdata and gundata files to make it all work. Installation ======= Trying to make this as easy as possible, by linking other downloads and eliminating any need to mod files. But you do need to download work done by modellers such as terrain and guns and infantry from the original downloads. And install these in the following order, but skip the steps not needed if you already have the files. First backup your current copy of the game, and make sure its patched to Nov 2008 (Lower RHS of main screen in game). 1) Download and install my current FMs and other files ("Game Files") from http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=8064 as per instructions. Note that although you do not need all the planes generally, you do need nearly all for the campaigns. You must have the "Game Files" included in that download. 2) Download and install Hinchinbrookes L63 Zeppelin here http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=3617 3) Download and install Edwards Flanders Terrain. Its here http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=4424. A simple install, just install everything as per instructions. 4) Download and install Tailspins Machine Gunners. Its here http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=6202. You only need to place the ParabellumAAA and VickersAAA in the GroundObjects folder, other changes are done in this download. 5) Download and install Tailspins/P10ppy's/A-Teams 37mm models. Its here http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=6165. Just install files, do not mod any files such as sound files or gundata files as described in Readme - this is done for you in this download. 6) Download and install Charles Cambrai and Bloody Appril campaigns. They are here http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=4888 and here http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=4860. A simple install, just install everything as per instructions. 7) Install this download LAST. Four main folders in zip file. Just drop these into your main First Eagles directory, and when prompted allow to overwrite. Note it will change gundata and weapondata files as well as other things, and that is essential. Sounds a lot. But once you have done this not only will you have several campaigns flying most of the available aircraft, you will also have many mods that will be part of your game, missions as well as campaigns, eg, infantry (from the Bloody April/Cambrai campaign downloads), machine gunners, 37mm guns, Mobile AAA and Armed Balloons. Makes the ground war and balloon hunting much more interesting. Credits ===== 37mm Guns including data.inis, sound, tracers, models and testing by Tailspin, P10ppy, B Bandy RFC, the A-Team. Flanders Terrain by Edward. Machine Gunners by Tailspin using models by the A-Team. Armed Balloons are by warlordATF. MobileAAA are by Gr.Viper. Cambrai and Bloody April Campaigns are by Charles, minor mods by me. Zeppelin L63 by Hinchinbrooke. L63 FM, 1916 campaigns by me, and minor mods to all the rest by me too.

Thanks don, glad you are enjoying it.

Been a while since I looked at this one Mike. Does seem strange. Though this doesn't sound like the problem, you do need this file in the Effects Folder if you don't have that. 37mmSpad.zip Maybe silly question but after adding to gundata file, you "saved as" using the gun editor? And sequence number is correct? Do you hear the gun reloading sound?

LOL Jedi. But it is an valid comment. My feeling is that most people that buy ROF are just going to go WOW! at first, its that good. But then, as it is on initial release, may easliy get bored within weeks due to the lack of content in terms of planes, campaigns, missions. But more then likely, modders will do campaigns, missions, skins very quickly - many people interested in RoF have done similar things for Il2 and there are many ww1 aficionados that have great deal of interest in the game and will do whatever it takes to make it a great ww1 game. The modding future looks bright, the game will probably attract the best modders. Most importantly, neoqb seem very committed to building the game quickly - flyable 2-seaters with artillery spotting, new flyable planes (they have many at various stages of development), new AI planes (the Pfalz D3 has already been released as AI for Russian version). They have talked about new campaigns, better quick combat and a dynamic campaign generator. I think that ROF has got the basics very right - graphics, FM, DM, AI, engine mangement, feeling of flight, great misson tools with triggers - that it will grow strongly and quickly, and probably for many years, it is so advanced. These are just my views, but it is what neoqb has promised, and everything they have done, and seem to be doing, confirms this. In a more general sense, I'm sure you would feel as I did if you played the game, that it is so incredible -way ahead of anything else - and neoqb who have spent a long time and a lot of money, that they would be crazy not to develop this game considerably. And its what neoqb have always stated as their business model ... content over time. Of course those that aren't convinced should just wait and watch developments before they purchase. But I think its a mistake to dismiss the game on its content in the initial release. It'll be one of those games that grow continuously and quickly, and that will be half the fun.

Hi Godzilla1985, Can't post vids, it was beta. If you know me, then you'll believe me when I say that the first thing I checked was the FM and then the AI! The AI are good, not like FE, supercharged, but very effective and ww1 like. It took me a lotta time to shoot one down - combination of stalls, stress (losing wings), physics (they are very light and get thrown around), as well as effective AI. I started off against Aces, and gave up. Couple of qualifications. It was beta, maybe things have changed, developers always tweak AI. And 2-seaters did not take much evasive action, maybe that is how the missions are programmed in those particular missions (as they are in some FE missions) and I didn't have a chance to fly campaigns. And two seater gunners were too effective. I love the damage modelling on crashes, but I'd agree an improvement would be to have some disintegrate or explode. They may have, and its probably easily done in the future. Edit: had a real quick look at some vids on SimHQ, it seems like the guy is flying a german aircraft in some shooting down german 2-seaters. They wouldn't shoot back I suspect :).

Don't know about Vids you have seen about AI, but my experience is that the AI are as good or even lots better then other games in dogfighting, eg, even FE which has excellent AI. Heaps better then all ww1 games I play in terms of formation, general flying and doing what they are asked/should be doing. Neat stuff like crashing on landing if damaged etc. Seems like lots of work went into developing the AI. Maybe vids by people of AI are in training mode or using lower skill level AI in 1:1 QC - shooting down planes (and just flying) takes a lot of practise in this game.

In for a penny, in for a pound? Looks like your wife is somewhat like you (with plane models), very productive! But seriously, congratulations Laton, great news.
-
Thanks Firecage, look forward to playing these campaigns.
-
Thanks guys, and I'm happy to say I've almost finished things to the point I can't really see much more I want to do or FMs that I want to improve for this version.
-
Well I can give you a review now. Its hard to compare ROF to other games. OFF has the campaign and many other things, FE has 100 plane models and and is loads of fun. ROF is light on content in its initial release, the user interface is threadbare (but beautiful), requires online single play and a good computer. But put simply, comparing ROF to other ww1 games, or any flight sim I have played, is like comparing a Ferrari to a Ford. ROF is superb. The FM, the AI, the damage modelling, the graphics, the physics. There isn't anything like it, most especially in terms of flying, fighting and realism.

A humdinger of a skin quack. Excellent work. I'm pretty partial to a nice looking Pfalz, so many thanks. -
"No Farman? The farman i did is a lotta fun to bomb in, or shoot down. Its a good addition I think. Yes There is the FE8" Borts Farman.
-
Hi Firecage, Hope you don't mind, but just a few points/questions: I have done a Hanriot italian, the dual won't work well with this patch. Be2? Is that the Be-2c? i haven't ever done a Be-2a, I don't think original FM will work AI-wise for this patch. No martinsyde G100? No Farman? The farman i did is a lotta fun to bomb in, or shoot down. Its a good addition I think. No Dh4? No Fokker D2 or D3? You have the Scouts down several times. Br14 is a bomber. Finally :), I haven't done the N27 FAS and Dual or N24 Bis, nor Fokker D8, Pfalz B1, PfalzE3AO for this version of the game. if you think they work, thats okay, but maybe point out that they need to use a different FM pack (the oct 2007 version that I did for those files). Otherwise it gets confusing I think. I have asked Hinchinbrooke a day or so ago if I could publish a FM I did for his Zeppelin. i use it in my campaigns, with squadron size 1 (too big for formations), with several squadrons. Seems okay but very easily brought down by AAA, its such a big target. If you were to include it you'd need to set resupply on high.
-
LOL. "The Edge of Insanity" Superb mate, you should put this up on youtube.
-
These are freely available for anyone to mod. Even capun and polovski (of OFF fame, who hosted these models at his site), stated that when all this erupted a couple of years ago. Ahh, memories
-
They'd be nice additions Laton.

peter01 replied to p10ppy's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
I'm pretty sure you can make it work. For player too. No takeoff of course, maybe need to change formation.ini, and keep numbers down to 1-3 per formation somehow ... certainly possible in custom missions or campaigns, maybe also by setting Zep to VERY RARE, and running games with air activity on Light. -
Very weird, but good you found a fix. I don't have the LOD or ini files extracted, yet no problem. And all the files I uploaded are the ones I use as well.
-
Thanks guys, its been a long road. Hopefully TK won't change how the Flight Model or AI works too much in the future. With Dagaith and Laton especially producing fine new models, the Voison would be great too, and Quack doing an excellent job on skins, things are humming along nicely. Just need some campaigns and some better terrains I think. Will need to update the FM pack again today, just forgot to include stuff in the Readme about the formation and airfield ini's for bombers.
