  1. In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren't good for the environment. The woman apologized to him and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day."

The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. The former generation did not care enough to save our environment."

He was right, that generation didn't have the green thing in its day. Back then, they returned their milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But they didn't have the green thing back in that customer's day. In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks. But she was right. They didn't have the green thing in her day.

Back then, they washed the baby's diapers because they didn't have the throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts - wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right; they didn't have the green thing back in her day.

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house - not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn't have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, they didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised by working so they didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; they didn't have the green thing back then.

They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But they didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or rode the school bus instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful the old folks were just because they didn't have the green thing back then?

    Field Modifications

    Dear Pilots,

Today we would like to show you some surprise items coming to ROF that you will be able to experience on your computer soon. It's fun to work with such an enthusiastic team because they always put in extra hours and sometimes this extra effort is spent researching new technologies or ideas and surprise breakthroughs are the result.

One such idea is the creation of WWI Gunsights! Since the creation of the British S.E.5a, many of you have asked us to create an "Aldis" sight for it. We never ignored this idea and we knew that we would be able to do it at some point in the future. For instance, attachments points for this sight have been installed on the aircraft since its first release. Amazingly, the future arrived sooner than we thought and soon you will have the opportunity to add the Aldis to your plane. This simple idea, combined with an interesting engineering solution, allowed WWI pilots to have a more accurate aim. We tried not only to reproduce the look of the instrument, but also accurately convey how it works.

    1.jpg 2.jpg 3.jpg

Certain German planes will also have a special gunsight available to help them aim. It will be available in two versions, for day and night use. The day sight will be equipped with an additional filter that allows the reticule to be seen even in bright light. The in-game execution of this filter will be simulated in the project very realistically.

    4.jpg 5.jpg 6.jpg

After finishing principle work on these sights, we decided to expand the work and adopt an idea that was first requested on the forum. Some of the guys decided to put in extra time to make even more equipment available and for many more aircraft in ROF. As a result, we will offer you additional purchasing options on our website to equip your favorite aircraft with what we are calling “Field Modifications”. Current ROF policy is to provide airplanes in a factory fresh state. This means new aircraft come to the front with equipment options our research has told us equipped these planes as default. As has been pointed out to us on the forum and from widely available data regarding the history of aviation technology of the First World War, we know that many aircraft were fine-tuned by mechanics and additional equipment was added to front-line aircraft. Talented individuals created many small improvements that made piloting early combat planes much easier. These changes were adopted based on hard won experience and often at the cost of a pilot’s life. But even more lives were saved with the help of these modifications and they helped bring glory to victorious to pilots who were able to use these enhancements in combat. The most common modifications in the field was the installation of additional devices such as altimeters, temperature sensors, clocks, compasses, fuel level indicators and lamps for night lighting – some of these items were even taken from downed enemy aircraft and were installed on friendly machines. Sometimes these were trophies, passing from one pilot to another or items purchased from mechanics or traded for with other squadrons. For instance, German fighter aircraft often used RAF gunsights. Our Field Modification program gives an opportunity to experience a similar system by outfitting different planes with their respective Field Mod kits.

    7.jpg 8.jpg 9.jpg 10.jpg 11.jpg 12.jpg

You will soon be able to buy these filed modifications in our store. They were created for each aircraft individually, based on already installed equipment and therefore will have different prices. For some aircraft in the package there will be up to nine items and for some only a single item. The cost of the most expensive field modification for one aircraft is currently $5.00 and the lowest is just $1.00.

We will also offer Field Mod bundles so you can outfit many planes at a time for a reduced overall cost.

You can choose which devices to install on your aircraft before each mission in the hangar. You can install all modifications for an aircraft or combinations of them. The exceptions are gunsights, some planes were able to use a couple different gunsights, but you can use only one gunsight at a time.

    13.jpg 14.jpg 15.jpg

We hope that such attention to detail will please you. If this idea proves to be popular with our community, we can develop some more cool stuff in this direction and in the future we may be able to offer you different options for modifying weapon load outs for aircraft including some rare options. An example of this could be an additional machine gun on a top wing for several planes, or rear-view mirrors or cutting out sections of the upper wing to improve visibility and many other unique engineering solutions invented during the First World War.

Good luck in your flights and keep watching our News blog for more news!

Some details about the new Сareer Mode

    Dear pilots,

We would like to give you some details about our new Career Mode that we have been working on so diligently over the past several months. This has been one of the most complex and challenging features we have every made. Below you will find a tentative list of the features it should include when released. To be honest, this has taken longer than expected, but we also added some more items that we knew the community wanted to see. Again, this list is tentative and some items may not make it due to poor test results or bugs, but this is what we hope to include.

    • Covers 700 days of the Great War. More days may be added if we build planes from even earlier in the war.
    • Continued promotion through the ranks.
    • Changing Weather with Seasonal Textures (Summer, Autumn and Winter).
    • New Titles and Awards.
    • More than 15 different types of missions.
    • New types of gameplay, such as adjusting artillery fire or photo reconnaissance, with new interactive elements and equipment such a wireless radio and/or camera added to your plane. You can also watch real-time changes in the world based on the results of your actions such as corrected artillery fire.
    • A higher level of interactivity and randomness during missions, for example, flying close to an enemy's airfield could trigger enemy fighters to intercept you.
    • Combines your personal statistics, events and achievements with real history.
    • Interactive map of hostilities with information about current operations at the front and the location of various units and squadrons.
    • Historically correct squadron’s location and re-locations.
    • Historically correct automatic mission completion by A.I. pilots in missions not involving the player using a new technique we developed.
    • Historically correct awards and conditions for awards.
    • Realistic calendar of European Weather
    • Virtual "Newspaper", depicting timely events at the front, new inventions in science and technology, and list of important aces published on a regular basis.
    • All virtual A.I. squadron mates have their own names, grow in rank and abilities, go the hospital if needed and receive awards for their actions.
    • Ability to meet historic allied or enemy aces in combat situations. If you kill a famous enemy ace he will not re-appear and his kill total will stop in the press.
    • Ability to be transferred to another squadron with promotion in rank.
    • Realistic attrition of personnel and material in your squadron.
    • Repair of damaged aircraft and hospitalization of wounded pilots.
    • Ability to use a custom paintjob after 5 kills.
    • Opportunity to become a squadron commander and plan missions.
    • Planning includes the selection of pilots and aircrafts, which will participate in your flight.
    • Editing a route: choice of range, move waypoints, a height indicator, buildings types, speeds and altitudes.
    • Many new villages, town and industrial areas added to the map along with windsocks at airfields.

These are the basic elements of the new Career mode we hope to include. Not only are we are trying to create aninteresting Career for you, but also trying to add some interesting information about the squadrons that participated in the Great War. So you will have an opportunity not only to read about the history, but also to participate in it. Arobust system with the ability to model all the activities and sorties of a particular squadron on an everyday basis during WWI was just a dream until now. In essence, when we combine the historical aspect with the new Career mission generator we will create something more, in our mind, than just a game or simulation. To us, this has the potential to become a kind of “interactive encyclopedia” or “interactive atlas” of aerial warfare during the Great War.

So we are now proceeding to the testing stage of its development and we hope to have it ready for release soon. Since this is such a complicated feature we cannot give you a firm release date yet. And we apologize for that, butwe don’t want to make any empty promises. As soon as we can give you a date for release we will.

Also, we invite you to participate in helping us add some historical and fun biographical information to thebackground portion of the new Career mode. Please check out this thread. (http://riseofflight.com/Forum/viewforum.php?f=315).

  5. So, for the implementation of Photo Reconnaissance flights or missions involving the Correction of Artillery you'll need some new equipment. This means a Camera and an Airborne Telegraph. As it often happens, it’s the little details that set ROF apart and we know you could not live without them so we have decided to work hard on these new elements. As always, we decided to try and not deviate from the principles of high detail and maximum accuracy in the reproduction of these new missions, so the camera and the telegraph became full-fledged 3D models and consequently, new equipment which you can outfit your plane with before flight. The camera and telegraph will make their debut in Version 19 on the DFW C.V. and the upcoming Breguet 14B. The camera was also mounted on SPAD aircraft. So the SPAD will get it as well. The in-game mechanics and interfaces of these new interactive mission types are still being worked on, but so far in testing they have proven to be great fun and add even more immersion to ROF. More on this as we move closer to Version 19 release.

    1.jpg 2.jpg 3.jpg

    4.jpg 5.jpg 6.jpg

In Version 19 a new flyable aircraft, the Breguet 14B, will rise into the ROF sky. In addition to the intelligence gathering functions, it can also act as a medium bomber with a range of different bombing options. The B14 was a very interesting plane to build and for the Team, it is one of the most beloved aircraft we have ever built for all of ROF. I am pleased to present to you a few pictures. You can now pre-order the Breguet 14B in our Store for just $8.99 prior to version 1.019 release. Your pre-orders help fuel our development plans so please consider pre-ordering this beautiful bird!

You may have spotted something else new in the images above? We have added a new graphical element to our engine – misty morning fog that evaporates! Its existence and appearance depends on the position of the sun and the seasons. As the sun rises it burns off and as the temperature drops it appears. We think this new ground hugging animated fog may be another combat flight simulation first. Please correct us if we are wrong. The inclusion of misty morning fog will make mornings and afternoons in Western France even more realistic and will add a nice sensation to departures.

Many thanks to all those who have stayed with us! We all know there is another sim out there who is vying for your attention and we know it can be distracting, but the current development status of ROF is at a crucial juncture and we need your support now more than ever! As always, we try to ensure that your support is transformed into new elements in the project and always with the highest quality of work and often for the first time in the genre. We still have some new innovative ideas we want to implement and more content to create for you.

Good luck in your flights and please wait for further news!

  6. I went ahead a copied the blog here. I was actually planning on posting earlier, so many thanks to catch for posting for everyone.

    Dear pilots,

Today we have prepared some good news for you. The first bit of news is about the release of Version 18 which will include the German DFW C.V. aircraft. The final preparations have begun and pretty soon you'll be able to take her into the air. The DFW as you might imagine has some predictable and good performance characteristics. It’s stable both in air and in the run-up with a pretty comfortable landing. It does not spin that easily, but its corkscrew characteristics are very interesting. Depending on the altitude and direction of rotation it will require different methods of recovery. Some spins are more difficult to recover from than others. This plane was a workhorse of the German air force in WWI so you will get a lot of practice on this plane.

Looking ahead to the next update which will be Version 19 we see another large milestone ahead. The main part of this version will be the newly re-designed game mode called "Career" that you have been expecting. We think this will cause you to look at ROF from a completely different angle. As we have mentioned before, this new Career Mode is technically challenging and ambitious and no doubt will have some teething issues upon release, but it is in testing and we are continuing to make solid progress. But before we discuss the Career mode any further I would like to highlight some other new in-game features that are in the shadow of this rising star.

So, for the implementation of Photo Reconnaissance flights or missions involving the Correction of Artillery you'll need some new equipment. This means a Camera and an Airborne Telegraph. 7. no problem, this is the only single player game I truely enjoyed. and with the mods it got to be even better looking. it seemed to take forever to learn that darn norden bombsight,. I will look around my cds and see if I have a copy of the 381st skin, not sure but it rings a bell. I have the 95th in both alum. and OD. I even have the window mods. I'll check to see if I can contact some o fthe folks who did them and ask about hosting them here. A word of caution about that darn second patch, keep a watch on your engines, it was supposed to fix engine management issues, but all it did was make them worse, lots of smokers. oh yeah, here is a link to the manual if you get a copy that doesn't one, but most have it on the disc. MANUAL and here is the key cards, you have to scroll down a bit key cards and for some great screenshots to go with a very good review look at these good review.

Oh yeah, and remember the Square B Lives forever!

  8. you can fly in any of the positions and the auto pilot will fly the plane, never tried it letting the AI do the bombing. Yes you can mod the entire aircraft. I use the skins from the 95th BG, and all custom nose arts. There's clear glass mods, crew mods, even the briefing room has a mod for it. I would start with the B-A forums B-A FORUMS HERE then look at Joels HERE and probably the best place is Doc's place, he has pictures of all your targets we took when we flew the v7th Recon flights and you can even listen to a jukebox with period music, check it out Doc's v7th Recon

  10. med_gallery_77_565_185555.jpg

    Handley Page 0-400

In the days of Red Baron 3-D squadron "wars", we would fly fighters as bombers. Why? Simply, there were no bombers that were flyable in game. This served the community well and still does, but it still wasn't the same.

Then 777 Studios announced they were going to have a true bomber in game, a real bomber. The first to be released was the Handley-Page 0/400. This was something most WW1 sims seemed to have forgotten about. A brief history of the airplane "The improved O/400 started to enter service in April 1918, gradually allowing the re-equipment of more squadrons, being used for both support for the ground forces on the Western Front, particularly during the German Spring Offensive, and for strategic bombing under the control of the Independent Air Force. In service, the O/400s could carry a new 1,650 lb (750 kg) bomb and were deployed in force, with up to 40 aircraft participating in a raid."

    med_gallery_77_565_46163.jpg

The Handley Page is a BIG airplane, this is a size comparison with a Dolphin on the runway. The modeling is, as usual with 777 Studios, nothing short of breathtaking. The cockpit sits mid line of the airplane, with the nose gunner right in front of the pilot. It is actually pretty cool watching him look around and man his guns when an enemy fighter approaches. If you look back you can see the rear gunner looking also. The only gunner you can't watch is the belly gunner, for obvious reasons, but he is there, and the AI gunner is very good. One of the coolest features of this airplane is your squadron mates can fly as your gunners, even if they don't have the airplane. This will make for some great times in the air. It also will make "war" nights alot more fun.

    med_gallery_77_565_241316.jpg

    med_gallery_77_565_150937.jpg

Remember this is a bomber, and it climbs and turns like one. Take offs are longer than in a fighter, but once airborne just climb out, watch your airspeed, make a few wide circles of your home aerodrome, and then point the nose to the target and just climb as you are on the way. Don't try to climb to fast or you'll find yourself in a spin, a slow and easy hand for bombers. I am no pilot, and have never talked to anyone who flew one of these, but the fight model seems real enough for me. It takes some getting used to, but this is one fun airplane to fly. When fully loaded it is like flying a cross between a bus and a 1957 Chevy, My first car. It took forever to turn, but was so much fun. When empty it is easier to keep your speed up, and it turns some better. Landing takes more room, so keep that in mind when on approach, I start my approach so I can make a few wide sweeping turns to bleed speed, and have plenty of room to correct my approach.

Bombing in the Handley Page takes a little getting used to, but is not to hard with some practice. That seems to be the theme with Rise of Flight the more time you spend with it, the better you get. The bombsight is straight forward, and once you switch from pilot to bombardier seat, remember to switch on the "autopilot" this makes for a smoother and level bomb run. Lining up the sights is controlled by you as you seem to always need a "small" amount of corrections. Once you touch the button to release, you can tell when you are empty by the flag that pops up . I like the fact that you can see your bomb string as it drops, nice touch, and watch the impact.

On this screenshot notice the port lower wing as it took a few hits from AAA you can see the fabric is gone and the frame is visible

The final verdict on the Handley-Page 0/400 is 9.5, for the graphics, the fact 3 of your squadron mates can fly with you(or just friends), and the fact it is a true bomber. I'm not a rivet counter, nor do I have a clue how the real one flew, so the flight model seems good to me. The Damage model is good, and it's just plain fun to fly. If you are a WW1 fan, and like bombers also, this is a great addition to your hanger in Rise of Flight. For squadrons making the move from Red Baron 3-D to Rise of Flight this is a great addition for "war nights".

Good for him, wish I'd had someone to teach me about firearms and hunting when I was his age. He's one lucky kid :good:

He is getting to be very woods wise. I am a hunter education instructor with the State of Va. and he wants to become one of our jr instructors, I'm very proud of that.

Thanks everyone, remember to vote every 24 hours. We never win anything, but maybe this time he will.
