This shot shows what happens when a landing goes bad. The F-4B in the center of the frame background landed but the wire snaped as the plane was slowing down the pilot tried to steer away from other aircraft in his way and instead steered himself into the port side (left) catwalk. This aircrew were rescued and the plane was stuck there for about two weeks until the ship pulled back into Subic Bay and the plane was lifted by a pierside crane from the ship.

This one off paint job came from the fact that during joint flight operations between the USS Forrestall and the HMS Ark Royal, this F-4B had landed and suffered a major maintenance discrepancy which prevented it from being flown back off. Unfortunatly for this Marine Phantom crew the Forrestall didn't have the parts needed right away and had to be guests onboard the Ark Royal for an extra week. At which time the Ark Royal was going to make a port call to Malta. At the time Malta wasn't on friendly terms with the US and since the RN battle group commander didn't want to mess up his port visit. He had the tail repainted and stuck in the middle of similar looking FG.1 Phantoms. All was good and just a few days after the port visit a USN helicopter came onboard to deliever a maintenance crew and the parts needed to get the airplane airborne and back "home" to the Forrestall.

The EF-10 was the Electronic Countermeasures version of the F3D Skywarrior. It served in this role from the mid-50's until it was replaced by the EA-6A in the early 70's. EF-10's flew across the DMZ and through out South Vietnam in support of USMC strike aircraft.

The EA-6A was an out growth from the need for a larger and faster electronic attack aircraft to replaced the old AD-5Q (EA-1F post 1962). It had a two man crew, an elarged tail blister, a six inch plug in the front around the nose and a pair of addtional pylons. This aircraft served in the United States Navy and Marine Corps inventories until the 1990's. When they were phased out of service.

In March of 1946 the USS Midway and CVBG-74, composed of the following squadrons: VF-74, VBF-74, VT-74, VB-74 went north into Hudson bay and began to see if flight operations could successfully be carried out in an Artic climate. After one month a number of lessons were learned and saved for future operations in such places as off Korea during the Korean War and later on during the Cold War as US Navy Carriers began to push further and further into the Norwegian Sea for operations agains the USSR.
