  1. Finished DH-4 package released

Nice as this model now looks with Quack's excellent skins, unfortunately, it's all but unusable for me due to the frame rates, which with any more than one plane in my flight, appear to be something in the region of one frame every ten seconds! D'you reckon there's anything we can do about this?
  2. Finished DH-4 package released

Okay TS, here's my (as you American's say) "two cents worth": The subject of DH4 engine installations is bewildering to say the least, but I've looked through the following references: 'Airco DH4' (Windsock Datafile Special)...By J.M. Bruce. 'British Aeroplanes 1914-1918'...By J.M. Bruce. 'The Aeroplanes of the Royal Flying Corps'...By J.M. Bruce. 'Airco, the Aircraft Manufacturing Company'...By Mick Davis. 'DeHavilland DH-4, From Flaming Coffin to Living Legend'...By Walter J. Boyne. Most of the early DH4's were powered by the 250hp Eagle (I-IV), and had an average top speed of 113mph, at 10,000ft. Although deliveries began in January 1917, by the end of March, only 50 odd had been delivered. So I would use March 1917 as the 'ServiceStartDate' in the DATA.INI file. The 375hp Eagle VIII version, which saw very limited use (especially by the RFC), appeared around August 1918. It had a top speed of 126mph at 10,000ft. The 400hp Liberty engined version was also introduced in August 1918. It had an average top speed of 117mph at 10.000ft. I think that'll do it...Any more versions would be overkill, IMHO. Hope that helps. Bucky

Most excellent! Love the Klinkerrumpf fuselage! Great work, 101tfs.
  4. My FE wish

Well, let's all make a big wish and hope that Jan Tuma makes it come true... http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showt...t=0&start=0
  5. D.H.4 progress

Could it be because you have it as "DH4", rather than "DH-4", or "DH.4"?
  6. D.H.4 progress

The phrase; "Silk purse out of a sow's ear" springs to mind. Stellar job, Quack! Bucky
  7. Regarding the service start and end dates, this might help. Scroll down to the last post. http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showt...mp;#entry183396

What MOI numbers are you using guys? On the 130 Camel, The adjustments I've settled on (for the time being anyway) are: MomentOfInertia=-18.10 (Which gives a half decent pull to the right, yet still allows you to take off, just so long as you use full left stick and rudder.) Also, after a bit of testing, I decided to go back to a slight restriction of the left turn by using these settings for the rudder: MaxDeflection=32.0 MinDeflection=-18.0 I've tried changing the "GyroscopicInertia" settings, trying to simulate the "nose up" left turn and the "nose down" right turn, but not been able to get that to work. I'd be interested to hear what settings you're all using. Bucky

Ha!... The Camel (or any rotary a/c) gets a throttle by inserting the double 'forward slashes' on the two 'BlipSwitch' lines. Thus: // Engines --------------------------------------------------------- [Engine] ReferenceName=Clerget 130 HP SystemType=PROP_ENGINE InputName=THROTTLE_CONTROL //BlipSwitch=TRUE //BlipThreshhold=0.95 Or you could just delete 'em of course. It's still well tricky taking off though, but it can be done with the 'MOI' set at around -25.0. Thanks for that, Tailspin.
  10. Camel FM

Yeah, keep at it TS...A decent Camel's in there somewhere, I reckon. Unfortunately the (very nice) blip switch, full-on or completely off effect is not applicable to ALL Rotaries. The Camel (for one) did have a throttle. D'you know if there's any way to get the throttle back like they were when the game was first released? It'll probably make all the difference to successful take offs.

As it happens, over the last couple of weeks I've been re-reading that sublime piece of literature; 'Winged Victory', by V.M Yeates. As you no doubt know, Yeates was a Camel pilot with 46 & 80 Sqns from February to August 31st 1918, and although written as a fictional novel, his book is actually a semi-biographical account of his wartime flying. I only realised this recently, but Chapter 3 (pages 30 to 37) contains the most beautifully graphic description of the Camel's flight characteristics I've ever read. I'm not gonna type out the whole eight pages, but here's a small section where Tom Cundall (actually Victor Yeates) is given a "preliminary lecture" by Baker, his instructor, before he goes solo on the Camel for the first time: "I suppose you haven't run a Clerget engine before. (It was a Clerget Camel.) You'll find it just like a Le Rhone; you've taken up the Le Rhone Pup, haven't you? You'll find it a bit fierce to start with: you've got another forty horse-power and plenty more revs. You'll soon get to like that. Be careful with your fine adjustment, they're a bit tricky on that. Ease it back as much as you can as soon as you're off the ground, and the higher you get the less juice you'll find she wants. I expect you've heard all about flying them. Be careful of your rudder. You may find it a bit difficult to keep straight at first. Keep just a shade of left rudder on to counteract the twist to the right; when you're on anything like full throttle you can feel the engine pulling to the right all the time." Anyone into WWI aviation that hasn't read this book, should buy it now...Today! It's cheap too! http://www.amazon.co.uk/Winged-Victory-V-M...3072&sr=1-1 http://www.amazon.com/Winged-Victory-V-Yea...3274&sr=1-1 Can you believe they put SE5's on the cover? Bucky
  12. Camel FM

Dunno. All that Gyroscopic precession, and torque physics business makes my head hurt, but Camels definitely pulled to the right. Good work you're doing there Tailspin. I think I'll await your next bout of testing before I go any further with it... I s'pose to be strictly accurate, ALL the rotary engine a/c should have a bit of torque added
  13. Camel FM

OK, I could go on testing this for hours, if not days, but I think it's all gonna come down to personal preference. So here's what I found after 20 minutes: To make the Camel pull to the right quite strongly, I altered the 'Moment OfInertia' line to: -60.10. Make sure you insert the hyphen ('-') before the number, otherwise it'll pull to the left. I'm not sure if I'll settle on that high a number, but it's a start...See what you think. Not sure if the AI Camel pilots will be able to handle that much torque either, but we'll see. I also reverted the rudder deflection to 32.0 left AND right. (Previously, I had it set at 32.0 right, and 10.0 left) Any help or feedback with all this would be good (is Peter around? )
  14. Camel FM

Well hush my mouth!...You're right fella's. Actually, in the 'Engine' section of the DATA.INI, apart from the 'MomentOfInertia' line, there's also a 'GyroscopicInertia' entry. The Camel's is set at 350.0. All I know is, with 'MomentOfInertia' set at 8.10, and 'GyroscopicInertia' set at 350.0, the Camel flys in a straight line, hands off. Think I'll do a little testing...
  15. Halberstadt CLIV - Released

Lovely model this...A fantastic joint contribution. Well done fella's! Bucky
  16. Camel FM

Hi Wildfowler. I brought this up before...Have a look here: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showt...23&hl=Camel Basically, you adjust the deflection of the Camel's rudder to simulate the restriction of a left turn, and the enhancement of a right turn. As far as I'm aware, engine torque isn't (can't be?) modelled in the game. Here are the numbers I settled on after a bit of experimenting: [Rudder] MaxDeflection=32.0 <-Right turn MinDeflection=-10.0 <-Left turn I haven't adjusted the rudders on Peter's latest Camel FM's yet, so I can't say how they handle. Hope this helps. Bucky
  17. Some Rarer Plane FMs

Hi PR. Many thanks for the revised DATA.INI's. Sorry for the delayed reply, I've been away most of this week. Bucky
  18. Some Rarer Plane FMs

Hi Peter. Excellent stuff!...I've been hoping you'd have a go at those rarer Pfalz'. I really don't want to put you to any trouble, but I'm wondering if there's any chance, at some time, you could supply a few existing DATA.ini's that differ from the standard versions? In no particular order, they are: Nieuport 17a. (The one with the single upper wing Lewis) Sopwith Dolphin. (two versions, with and without the Lewis guns) Bristol Scout C. (The one with the obliquely angled Lewis on the fuselage side) SE5a. (The one with no headrest) Totally understand if you can't find the time, of course  Thanks again. Bucky
  19. Nieuport 17: ghost guns

Hi Christian. Thanks for the amended files. However, since adding them into my Nieuport 17a folder, the cockpit windscreen intermittently disappears, then reappears. This only happens when in 'Padlock' view. Do you have any idea how to fix this? Thanks again. Bucky
  20. Welcome new posters....

  21. Float planes

BOOM CHICKA WAH WAH!! Man, I can't believe these have been stashed away all this time! Are there any other unreleased gem's in those WoW Max files, Laton? Regards. Bucky
  22. Modable planes in campaign

And a very good method it is too, I might add!
  23. Fallen Eagle

Right here: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autoc...p;showfile=2678 Bit of a learning curve, but once you know its little foibles, you'll be creating missions in no time at all Have fun!
  24. Fallen Eagle

Sorry to hear 'bout Fanshaw & Hall, old boy...Rum deal that, having outlived such a long stint on Quirks! Let's hope their replacements are made of the same stuff, eh? Nice idea, regarding the 'Single Mission' Campaign. Might have a go at that myself, but with the slight difference of using the KMD mission builder in order to utilise historically accurate units/skins, airfields and plane types. To add the "random" factor, there's the aircraft 'X percent chance appearance' box, which should make it a bit more interesting. Thanks for the inspiration! Bucky
  25. Jasta Boelcke Alb DIII's pics?

Sorry, man...It didn't even occur to me that they were one and the same machine.
