Yeah, good advice, but it'd be sooooooo much better if you could select enemy planes and skins via the 'Single Mission' game menu. -
Hi guys, I felt that the Camel's rudder control wasn't responsive enough...Seemed to be getting out-turned by most, if not all AI planes. So I experimented with changing the Rudder settings in the Camel's DATA.INI file. When flying the DH2, I noticed that it had excellent rudder response, so I copied the following lines from the DH2's DATA.INI "Rudder" section (It's near the bottom), and pasted it into the Camel's: MaxDeflection=32.0 MinDeflection=-32.0 CLiftdc=0.001 CDdc=0.0041 Cydc=0.0225 Cldc=0.0003 Cndc=-0.0315 It'll now turn a lot quicker and feel a bit more skittish. Which is more in keeping with Camel pilot reports. I'm definitely no expert on FM's, but it doesn't seem to have any adverse affects. Give it a go and see what you think... Make a copy of the Camel's DATA.INI file before you make the changes though...Just in case you don't like it. Cheers. Bucky

Nice one, Laton. That does work...Well sort of... I tested it with this setting for the right: MaxDeflection=32.0. And after some experimentation: This for the left: MinDeflection=-10.0 Those settings will slow down the left turn, but it can be overcome by banking the Camel a bit steeper, which kinda negates the restriction on the rudder. I haven't had enough testing time to give any definitive assessment, but with a bit more experimentation and fine tuning? ... Thanks for your input. Bucky -

Hi Ronbo. After reading your above post, you kinda had me doubting myself. So I went back and compared the 110hp Camel again. First with the original DATA.INI, then with the amended, enhanced rudder version. I was slightly relieved to find that I wouldn't have to alter my original assessment. The DATA.INI rudder changes definitely make a marked difference to the Camel's handling as far as I'm concerned, but without making it an uber performer. Not sure if it might have something to do with differences between joysticks?...I use a Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 which is a twist stick rudder control type. Maybe other joysticks or using pedals give different results?... Ultimately though, it's all down to personal taste, I s'pose... Regards. Bucky PS. Cheating?...Personally, I reckon not. It's just a small attempt at more accurate flight characteristics as reported by actual WWI pilots. The following quotes are all from the book 'Sopwith Camel, King of Combat' by Chaz Bowyer. Norman Macmillan of 45 Sqn had this to say about the Camel's turning powers: "I fought in Camels for five months and afterwards was responsible for all the advanced training on a Camel training station, and can say positively that the Camel's lightning turn was right-handed. In 45 Squadron we used to estimate that the Camel could complete three turns to the right to the Albatros D.V's two, but when turning left these two aircraft were approximately equal with one another in rate of turn." Henry Woollett (36 victories) said: "The Camel could dictate a fight and turn inside any scout the enemy used, if it was operating at the right altitude (approx 12000ft)." Major Oliver Stuart, who flew and tested many WWI a/c and numerous Camels said: "The Camel set a new standard in powers of manoeuvre and even today (circa 1936) it probably remains the most highly manoeuvrable aeroplane that has ever been built." Maybe, to achieve a bit more realism there might be a way to slow down or restrict the left turn, but as far as I'm aware, gyroscopic precession can't be replicated in the game so I think adjusting the rudder is the only way. IMO, a faster turn left AND right is a better compromise (and more Camel like) than a slow turn both ways. Regards. Bucky -

Well, before posting the above, I tested the Camel one vs one against the Dr.I and found 'em to be very evenly matched. Then I flew the Dr.I against three Camels and lasted about 15 seconds. Then 4 vs 4 against 150 hp Camels. and eventually brought two down... Like I said,...Give it a go. It's a definite improvement if you ask me. :yes: Regards. Bucky -

The "Read Me" will explain... Aside from using authentic sound samples, in my opinion, the next most important aspect of decent sound within a game is balance. I therefore paid particular attention to this when editing these files. As an example, check out the "WindLoop" sound, just audible above the noise of the engine. New sounds included: "PropLoop" "Lerhone" "RotaryEngine" "Vickers" "Lewis" "Spandau" "Parabellum" "WindLoop" "Tiretouch" "Dirthit" Please note: The game's default volume for bullet hits on AI planes will be heard at the same volume level as hits to the players plane, which is obviously unrealistic. So to rectify this, extract, then open the "SOUNDLIST.INI" file from the "FlightData.cat". Scroll down to "DirtHit", and change the "MaxDist=" line to: MaxDist=010.000000. Disclaimer: I just want to let it be known that these files have been tucked away on my PC for three years or more, and therefore I can't remember where they originated from. Although I've enhanced and edited these samples to the point where they bear little or no relation to the originals, if anyone recognises one of them as being theirs and then take exception to their use, then please PM me and I'll be happy to delete that file from the package. EDIT 2/3/09: Sorry, forgot to mention...Just as a guide: I use "Lerhone" for all the early 1915-16 rotary engine aircraft: DH2, Pup, Nieuports, Eindekker's, etc. It could also be used for the Fokker Dr.I and 110hp Sopwith Camel. Use "RotaryEngine" for the Sopwith Triplane, 130 & 150hp Camels and all other late war (mid 1917-1918) rotary powered planes. Sorry for the delayed reply Dagaith, I missed your post tucked away in the top corner here! I tested the download myself and found all to be OK except "Lerhone" which I agree, played in isolation, has a bit of a "tappety" noise, but when used in-game is totally unnoticable (to my ears anyway). Whatever, I went through the whole lot again and updated the package. I hope the new lot work for you. My apologies to you and anyone else who had trouble with the first download. Bucky. -

Hi Bleddyn. Only the cowlings, metal panels and wheels were painted black. The fin of 'Black Maria', serial No. N533 was also over-painted black at some stage. All other parts (fuselage, wings etc) of the Black Flight Tripes were in standard (PC10 or PC12 & clear dope) finish. Also, I think the names were painted beneath the cockpit on both sides of the fuselage. Regards. Bucky -

I know you've got enough on your plate with the upper decking No.4 'n all, but while you're working in that area, I was thinking you might want to have a look at the positioning of the two white bars in comparison with the photos...D'you think they're a bit too far forward and maybe a tad too small? Sorry if I'm being a pain in the A***, man... -

Number 14 could be a later, replacement machine of course... Re: Rudder stripes...Well spotted! :yes: British a/c were built by many contracted company's. For instance, besides Sopwith's, Triplanes were also built by Clayton & Shuttleworth. My guess would be; maybe some contractors painted their stripes in reverse? Dunno 'bout the red, white 'n blue or black flight colours applying to all 4 Tripe squadrons TBH, but Naval sqn's 1 and 10 do seem to have used that system. Y'know, if I had to choose one plane as my favourite WW1 a/c, I think it'd have to be the Tripe...It was just sooo radical. Looking forward to seeing the rest of your Tripe skins, but don't upset your Mrs in the process, man...Specially not THIS weekend! Have a good'un. -

Don't go to too much trouble, man...It's really OK as is! The Squadron markings changed during the 11 months that they used the Triplane (Jan-Nov '17): The line up photo was taken in July 1917 and shows the Naval 1 Triplanes in their final decor stage, when both the fuselage AND cowling were painted in the camo colour, PC10 (or PC12). Maybe just do the planes you have a photo or profile for. If they're mostly white fins 'n wheels, that'll be cool. -

Well, I think the wheels and fins might've been coloured according to flights, possibly 'A', red, 'B', white and 'C', Black. I've had a look in a few books but not been able to find any firm confirmation on it though. Not even in 'British Aviation Squadron Markings of WW1' by Les Rogers. And if it 'aint in there... Incidentally, Don't want to come across all nitpicky, but No.4, serial No.N5377 should have the "4" repeated on the rear decking, roughly in line with the fuselage numeral. I haven't seen any other 1 Naval Tripes with numbers repeated on the decking though. Regards. Bucky -

Hi Quack. Just wanted to say thanks for your latest Tripe schemes...The Sopwith ones, that is. Very nice!...You certainly like a triplane, don't you? Am I right in thinking you've been buying a few of the Osprey books lately? I know I'm always on the cadge, but any chance you could do a few from 1 Naval Sqn? They're the rather sporty looking Tripes in overall PC10, with the large numbers on the fuselage instead of the roundel.
