You're right...Photo's of J6 Dr.I's are scarce. In fact, the only one I can find with personal markings apart from those you've already done, is in this well known Jasta 6 line up photo (Scroll down to page 66): http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=jxYmyaU...lt#PRA1-PA12,M1 From right to left, it's the fifth in line. There's a colour profile of it in the Windsock publication, 'Von Richthofen's Flying Circus', by Greg VanWyngarden, plate 9, page 25. The fuselage bands, which are of equal width, are depicted as white, black, white. It also had a black rudder. Serial number and pilot unknown. Best I can come up with, I think. Bucky Thanks for the kind words BTW. -

Thanks for the latest J6's, man. Particularly the most excellent Kirschtein skin...One of, if not THE best yet. Any more from Jasta 6 on the Quack conveyor belt? -
Ouestion about default paint on Albatros D.III

Great work, Warlord. The 'purple tail only' and green/brown wings version of Wolff's machine is just how I imagine it to have been. So thanks very much for that. I also like the revised LvR, with the red fuselage band...Nice bit of research there. Excellent version of Simon's machine too. Thanks again for an excellent contribution to the game. Bucky -

If historical accuracy is an issue, then only being able to use the Dr.I up until June would be about right. It was being withdrawn from frontline use at this time to make way for the Fokker D.VII. That's not to say that it disappeared totally by then, but it seems only a few pilots who particularly favoured it (Jacobs & Raben for example) kept hold of theirs. The exception was (I think) Jasta 14, which was the only unit to still be totally equipped with it beyond that time...Maybe up until mid August. Hence the thin, late war crosses on their Tripes. Ouestion about default paint on Albatros D.III

The red 'n green one looks like a contender to me Stephen...Very nice indeed! I've never given the colour of Wolff's D.III's much thought before, but I have to say, regarding the purple one, I'm tending toward the 'purple tail and rear fuselage only' theory now. Painted in that way, he could've had the red nose, wheels and struts, and the clear varnished forward fuselage. Thereby avoiding the horrendous red/purple colour clash. As to the wing camo colours: Bearing in mind that the 'purple' machine came first, and was an early variant, I'd say it probably would've had the earlier green/brown colours, rather than the lilac/green. I think you could get away with the lilac/green wings on the later, red one though, if you wanted to. The Idflieg order to repaint wing camouflage colours was issued in April '17. Still all based on conjecture, but I hope this helps a little. Bucky -

Too dark? Nah...Looks good to me! Y,know, I noticed the missing white face plate for the first time just last night, but didn't wanna start nit picking! A single file patch would definitely be the way to go, I reckon. Looking forward to the remaining Dr.I skins, but was wondering if you might do any Jasta 26? http://img.tripatlas.com:8080/media/images/Fordi.jpg Good site this, BTW: http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww1/f/416/59/0/4_b1 http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww1/f/416/59/2/21 And you know about this one, right? http://www.fokkerdr1.com/Mainpage.htm Cheers! -

Hey! Thanks for the early Baumer skin, Quack...It's a real doozy! Can't wait for the Jasta 6, Hans Kirschstein! I'll say it again...Keep 'em comin'! Bucky -
Books for color schemes anyone?
Southside Bucky replied to quack74's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
Yeah, man...I was gonna say, watch out, 'cause you're on the slippery slope towards total, utter addiction...Like I've been for the last 20 years or so. There's not a month goes by without me buying at least one book on the subject...Usually more! -

Yeah, you can buy any of the osprey's with total confidence. There are some real bargains on Amazon...Check out the used price on this one for example, which is a must have: http://www.amazon.com/Richthofens-Circus-J...954&sr=1-10 Also, knowing how much you like the Triplane...Try to get this before it disappears. It's chock full of photo's, and has some nice colour profiles and plan views. http://www.amazon.com/Fokker-Dr-I-Triplane...4341&sr=1-2 Bucky -
Ouestion about default paint on Albatros D.III
Southside Bucky replied to WarlordATF's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
Without wanting to over complicate things, I think it's worth mentioning that there is another school of thought regarding the colours of Wolff's early D.III: Some "experts" are of the opinion that the early Albatros flown by Wolff, which would have had the centrally placed upper wing radiator, only had the rear fuselage and tail painted purple. A purple version of Schaefer's D.III, if you will. It would appear from that photo, that the D.III Wolff's standing next to is the later variant with the off-set radiator, and was possibly painted overall red, but with a green nose and elevator. This would kinda fit in better with other J11 schemes like Allmenroeder's and Brauneck's. Decisions, decisions, eh? Bucky -

Incidentally, Notice in the photo of Wolf standing next to (presumably) his machine, that the wheel covers seem to be a light shade. Probably the factory finish, light grey. -

Here's another Artist's rendition. This time with a green elevator: http://www.barryweekleyart.com/aviation/Ku...0Jasta%2011.jpg Scroll down for a photo of Wolff standing next to the plane in question: http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=h...l%3Den%26sa%3DN Whether or not it had a red nose, struts and wheels is anyone's guess, but IMO, it probably would've had the standard three colour camouflage on the wings. BTW, heres a good colour profile of Georg Simon's D.III. http://wp.scn.ru/en/ww1/f/415/59/2/33 He was shot down and captured on June 4th '17. His Albatros also survived intact and was given the British capture number G42. -

Well done! Really nice set of scheme's you've put together there, Warlord. Don't wanna put you to any trouble, but any chance you could do Wolff's "plum purple" machine? All the best. Bucky PS. Thanks for the mention in the read me, too. -
Yeah, sorry man...Maybe I shoulda kept schtumm about that one? If it's any consolation, your latest batch of Triplane skins are most excellent. Especially Plange's J2 multi-cross skin. On a similar theme, I know you've already done the later version, but are you familiar with Paul Baumer's early multi-cross Tripe? The one with crosses on the lower wings and tailplane? That'd make a nice addition to your Dr.I back catalogue.

Hi Quack. The reason you haven't seen any other Jasta 18 Triplane photo's is because there weren't any. As Staffelfuhrer, August Raben managed to procure a Dr.I for his own use, but the rest of the J18 pilots continued using Albatros D.V's and Pfalz D.III's, until they were re-equipped with the Fokker D.VII in June '18. Sorry man, we were posting at the same time there... It's difficult to say, 'cause there aren't any photo's to back it up...But if it were me, I'd do the nose like this: http://aces.safarikovi.org/victories/obr1/...iii_schafer.jpg -

For what its worth, in the late A.E. Ferko's excellent book; 'Richthofen', he states: "On March 6 Ltn Lubbert recorded the following colours of his Staffel mates: Obltn. Freiherr von Richthofen. Bright Red. Ltn. Carl Emil Schafer. Yellow with Black Tail. Ltn. Kurt Wolff. Plum Purple. Ltn. Edy Lubbert. Half Blue, Half Yellow." He (Ferko) goes on: "When Lothar von Richthofen joined the Staffel he later opted for yellow at the rear end, ie, on rudder and elevators." Even if there were photo's of LvR's D.III, I don't think it'd be much help 'cause the orthochromatic film the Germans usually used at the time, rendered yellow shades either very dark grey or black. To illustrate this, there's a photo of a Jasta 11 Albatros D.III line up on page 22 of 'Richthofen' that makes it look as though ALL J11 D.III's were entirely overpainted with dark paint, but that orthochromatic film type caused the yellow varnished wood fuselages to photograph almost black. Hi fella's. Just an observation: Where Jasta 11 D.III markings and colour schemes are concerned, photo's and documented colours are quite scarce, so I'm not saying the scheme posted by Warlord is wrong, but I think it was rare at the time (early '17) to paint the forward fuselage up to the cockpit as depicted. IMHO, it might be a tad more representative, albeit generic, to have the red nose painted only as far as the front of the engine. Up to you though, of course. Regards. Bucky -

Apparently, Otto Brauneck's Albatros D.III also had a completely red fuselage, with a blue nose. But off the top of my head, unlike the other two examples above, I don't recall ever seeing a photo of it. Bucky -

No, it's not correct as a generic Jasta 11 machine. As you say, J11 pilots generally used red on the noses and tails of their a/c. There were exceptions though...Karl Allmenroeder's, D.III for example, did have the complete red fuselage, but with a white nose and elevator. Then there's Georg Simon's machine, which had a totally red fuselage except for a large green band aft of the cockpit. Actually, some colours and markings enthusiasts would say that the generic Jasta 11 skin is a more accurate representation of MvR's D.III (The one he called "Le Petite Rouge") than the actual 'Richthofen M' skin, because it has camouflage/sky blue wings. Regards. Bucky -
Hi J.P. OK, it's not the Skunkworks/A team Camel, but the very similar MikeWHL version. The skin(s) made for this model are equally incompatible with the Expansion Pack Camel. Regards. Bucky

No prob's...Glad to help. Actually, with a bit more research on the subject, it's doubtful if Stark ever got the chance to personalise his Dr.I, and he certainly never scored any of his eleven victories in it. because quite soon after receiving it, he was posted to command Jasta 77. If you can find a copy of Rudolph Stark's book 'Wings of War' it's well worth a read, even if it is written in that dour teutonic style. Tends to be quite expensive too. Great job on the new J14 skins BTW. Oh, and thanks for the mention in the new 'Read Me'. Bucky

Hi Mike. Hope you don't mind this Sassenach butting in, but regarding the missing rudder stripes, I just wanted to say that I was getting it too, until TK issued the November 08 patch. At that point I decided to do a completely fresh install, rather than just overlay that patch over the October one. It seemed to work 'cause I haven't come across the problem since. Hope that helps. Bucky.

Well, first off, Stark never flew in Jasta 11. He served with Jasta's 34, 77, and 35. Dr.I 146/17 was indeed a Jasta 11 machine, but it was handed down to Jasta 34 in May 1918. Stark was photographed sitting in, and standing next to it, but comparing photo's of 146/17 in Jasta 11 service, and those taken with Stark when he was with J34, show that the paint scheme was exactly the same, except for the overpainting of the crosses. Stark may have had it painted with his trademark lilac colour sometime later though. As you say in your 'Read Me', the colours of 146/17 are speculative...Especially the yellow. As far as I'm aware, the Jasta 11 pilot of 146/17 is unknown, but Edgar Scholtz (6 victories) did fly with Jasta 11 from January till May 2nd 1918, when he was killed in a flying accident, so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that it was his. Up to you of course, but personally, I would rename the skin something like "J11Scholtz?". Regards. Bucky
