    8. Spitfire PR Mk.XIX "Flying Spyglass" DJ0021

      Spitfire Mk.XIX 'Flying Spyglass'
      Unit: unknown
      Serial: A/Z (DJ0021)
      Reconnaissance aircraft. Spring 1945.

This is a very unusual looking Spitfire and is very obscure, in fact I have only found one profile image of this aircraft to work from and can find out very little about it from my searches - wanted to skin it for those very reasons.

This skin is for the above mentioned aircraft and though we don't have a MKXIX Spitfire in the game the real plane closely resembles the MKVIII that we do have access to so this is what I chose to use. The only real difference in how it looks physically is that the real plane (having a Griffon engine) has distinctive raised elongated bulges just above the overhead valves which I have tried to fake onto the actual skin.
Since it is a Recon Spitfire, I have also faked the cameras onto the fuselage and the underside of the airframe.
In place of the reflector gunsight I have also faked the camera controls into the cockpit which can be viewed externally.

Stick this in your "SpitfireMkVIII" skin folder and you are ready to go - note that it will fit the MKVIII Clipped Wing version as well so you may as well put it in that folder too. Three versions; "Marked","Roundels only" and "Unmarked" versions included.

Template created by "Fly By Shooter" with elements from "Jesters Ink" and Myself.

    13. Chance-Vought Corsair MkIV "Donald J. Sheppard"

Vought Corsair MkIV which is finished in the markings of Sub Lieutenant Donald J. Sheppard
      Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve
      No. 1836 Squadron, HMS Victorious
      Sakishima Islands, East China Seas
      May, 1945

Sheppard holds the distinction of being the only FAA Corsair ace of WWII. This Corsair is finished in Fleet Air Arm colours.
"Some sources state that the Corsairs were painted in US equivalents of Olive Drab, Neutral Gray and Sky Gray. This could very well be, but a colour photo I have, does not look like these colours. Furthermore, Dana Bell has stated in his Export Colors publication that some US aircraft were still being delivered in the proper British colours right up until war's end." So, that is good enough for me.

Place the file in your IL-2/paintschemes/skins/Corsair MkIV folder and have a great flight..
      Compatable with PF and PF+FB+AEP

    14. Su-2 as TBD Devastator

Su-2 reskinned as a TBD Devastator.

I found the lack of this plane to be a major problem when creating early Pacific Naval scenarios.

The Devastator was not a star performer...Slow, antiquated, short on range and lacking armour, barely able to take off with its torpedo.
(Infact its main purpose seems to have been to iterate to the USN that they needed an effective Torpedo Bomber !).

The Su-2 is not a perfect substitute but seems the closest plane ingame in look and performance (especially when set to 'Rookie' with the minimum fuel load.)
The Su-2 cannot carry torpedoes (but 2x250kilo bombs is similar to the 1000lb bombload of the Devastator and is possibly more effective than the 'dud' MkXIII torpedoes that the US navy had during early 42.)

The Su-2 is slow and relatively unarmoured (like the Devastator) and has light guns, 3 Shvaks, which is similar to the Devastators (f) .50 & (rear).30.

Although unable to land on a carrier ,the Su-2 seems far closer ingame to this plane than the TBF-1 and for coops and offline missions, this skin may prove useful to others as it has to me.

    16. The wild huntsman - Willi Reschke Ta 152 campaign

To run the campaign you need IL2 Sturmovik 1946 (version 4.08).

The package contains the campaign files and a exclusive skinpack from RDDR for the JG 300/301/302 skins; only available with this campaign.

Please unzip the files into a temp-folder and read the README bevor you start to install the campaign.

If you have installed "the last days" (TLD) plese read the install.pdf!!!

Reading the book from Willi Rreschke „Jagdgeschwader 303/302 wilde sau“ animated me to do a dynamic campaign about it.

The JG 300/ 301 and 302 were named „wilde sau“, cause they were build in 1943, to stop the british night bombing of german cities, with Bf109 and Fw190. They flew without eletronics or radar equipment over the burning cities, to fight the bombers in range of vision. A job like suicide.

These units were build by former bomber pilots. Step by step, they were used from the early year of 1944 on, as day fighters, till the end of the war. Their only duty was the defenese of the homeland.

Willi Reschke served as fighterpliot in the JG 302 from summer 1944 in the defense of the reich. He first flew against the alliied bombers over ungary in summer 1944.

In autum of 1944 the JG 302 was renamed or reorganizd into JG 301 an reequipped with Fw190 A8 and A9. With this plane he flew at the end of 1944 till 1945 over germany.

In the beginning of 1945 his Jagdgeschwader (fighter wing) was used in the attempt, to stop the russian troops heading for Berlin.

The JG 301 was the only german unit, which was equipped with a small number of the new Ta 152H fighters. Willi Reschke was one of the few, who flew with this plane.

In my campaign, the Ta 152H will also be flyable in the second subcampaign, Reichsverteidigung 1944.

      The campaign

      • Ungary summer 1944: baptism of fire (Bf109G6)
      • Defense of the reich, end of 1944
      • The last stand, Berlin 1945

You also could fly with JG 300, which used the Fw190A8 in the ungary campaign. The Ta 152H is playable even in the second subcampaign, as bonus or what-if.

      Have fun

    24. D-Day T.O.O. v2

      "D-Day Targets of Opportunity"
      Three historical missions of D-Day,
      1) P-38 CAP of the beaches,
      2) P-47's stopping 22nd SS Panzer and Panzer Lehr Divisions trains South of Caen
      3) A-20 attacking the Rail marshalling yards at Le Havre

1944 June 6 D-DAY - on a foggy overcast day the Allies land at Normandy. Field Marshal Rommel was of the firm belief that the only way to defeat an invasion was to counterattack the beaches as early as possible with armour.

Two hours before the seaborne landings began, Field Marshal von Rundstedt ordered the two reserve panzer divisions available for counterattack in Normandy, the 12th SS Panzer and Panzer Lehr, to move immediately toward Caen. He did so on the basis of an intuitive judgment that the airborne landings were on such a large scale that they could not be a mere deception maneuver and would have to be reinforced from the sea. The only place such landings could come in lower Normandy were on the Calvados and Cotentin coasts. He wanted armor there to meet the attack.

von Rundstedt's reasoning was sound, his action decisive, his orders clear.

But the panzer divisions were not under his command. They were in OKW reserve. To save precious time, von Rundstedt first ordered them to move out, then requested OKW approval. OKW did not approve. At 0730 Jodi informed von Rundstedt that the two divisions could not be committed until Hitler gave the order, and Hitler was still sleeping. von Rundstedt had to countermand the move-out order. Hitler slept until noon

Hitler's mistrust of his generals and the generals' mistrust of Hitler greatly assisted the Allies. So were Hitler's sleeping habits, as well as his Wolkenkuckucksheim ideas.

The two panzer divisions spent the morning waiting. There was a heavy overcast; they could have moved out free from serious interference from Allied aircraft. It was 1600 when Hitler at last gave his approval. By then the clouds had broken up and Allied fighters and bombers ranged the skies over Normandy, smashing anything that moved.
