ServiceStartYear and ServiceEndDate

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have started to compile a list of the start and end dates from the _DATA.ini files for most of the existing aircraft. If they came from the original TW planes or if they came from Skunkworks, I left them as they were. Some of the others, I have changed a bit, so I get a sense of when these plane might have flown together (or against each other). The hardest part is getting the dates for the end of service. I am new at this, so if you would like to update these, please do. Wow, FE started with just a few planes.

The hardest part is getting the dates for the end of service.

I think I'd leave at least the Nieuport 17 and Pfalz DIII going until the end of the war. They survived in Mesopotamia longer than in France, and there might be more terrains sometime.

Another good source of aircraft availability with dates is over at the Canvas Eagles web site:

http://canvaseagles.diplomacy.ca/aircraft_...lity_charts.htm

They seem accurate enough but have the Siemens-Schukert down as French when it is in fact German.

The rest of the Canvas Eagle rules are at:

http://www.eaglesmax.com/index.html

They are good fun so try them if you like.

SRT, its a good idea. But a lot of those you have (I know its not yours as such) are not what I think at least, mainly earlier planes, my thoughts:

HalberstDII 04/1915 to 11/1917.......should be more like 07/1916 to 04/1917

DH2 06/1915 to 06/1916 .......should be more like 02/1916 to about mid 1917

EIII 06/1915 to 07/1916.......should be more like finishing 10/1916

EIIIL 09/1915 to 06/1916 .......should be more like 03/1916 to 10/1916

E IV 11/1915 to 08/1916.......should be more like 03/1916 to 10/1916

SPAD7 08/1916 to 08/1917 .......should be more like 05/1917 to 11/1918 for 175HP version I think. We don't have 150HP.

FokkerDIII 07/1916 to 12/1917.......should be more like end 04/1917

AlbatrosDI 08/1916 to 04/1917.......should be more like 09/1916 to 11/1916

N11 06/1915 to 08/1916.......should be more like 01/1916 to 12/1916

Anyway good idea.

I'm really glad to see this topic being addressed. I started to do it for myself, but then came across the same almost hopeless lack of end dates.

Much of that must be that planes were phased out slowly (duh, ya...) and on the British side shifted across the channel for home defence.

IMHO, there should be a set of loosely "standardized" dates that we can all agree upon (yah, right you say?!?), and then we can move forward with mods and compatibility won't be an issue. It doesn't have to be perfect, but a compromise will do...

WRT whether something was in service in "Mesopotamia" shouldn't enter into the timeline for the Western Front. If anything, there should be separate timelines for different geographical/campaigns, otherwise AC that weren't in certain places won't show up there...

Just $0.02 worth

One of the problems with end dates is aircraft availability. Some relatively common earlier aircraft were still in use late in the war but in small numbers. For instance, I've seen references to Alb. DI/IIs still flying in Aug. 1918 but you surely weren't likely to see them at squadron strength over the front lines at that time. I'm sure that applies to several of the aircraft types. Changing the availability to rare would help but that would be conterproductive to flying missions during time periods when they were common. You'd have to change the availability according to what time period you were in the sim.

Excellent responses all and very interesting. (Now I've started it.) Thanks for the info and corrections.

I like this approach from B Bandy RFC, "there should be a set of loosely "standardized" dates that we can all agree upon (yah, right you say?!?)." It seems the best to hope for, although the idea of squadrons with mixed craft, would be really neat. (lets see, ... while flying my D7, I come across a couple of old N17s. I laugh with superior confidence, and a N17 quickly wips around and daftly shoots me in the head, my vision turns red, then black. Pride goeth before ... and all.)

Anyway, I wanted to know what would likely be encountered in the air during certain times. I am updating my list. Thanks again!

I think:

/only for ww1 west front/

B.E.2a 08/1914 to mid 1916

Pup 10/1916 (in front 01/1917) to 10/1917

N11 5.1.1916 to winter 1916

EIII 10/1915 to 9/1916

Triplan 02/1917 to 10/1917

Br14 to 11/1918

Gotha IV 01/1917 to 11/1918

Fok D8 8(9)/1918 to 11/1918
