Enough of this world traveling, lets go time traveling! The Scorpion was designed as a 'contenintal defense interceptor'...to stop those waves of Russian bombers bent on destroying American cities. As such, it has a very limited role. So, we're going to change the top section "MissionData" to more fit the reality of the situation. I have allowed for a couple of other mission types, although I doubt that ADC would have actually allowed them, in partucular view that I've found NO reference of any model Scorpion being deployed outside the CONUS (well, I most definatley include Alaska in that, even though it was only a territory until 1959)

 

MissionData - copy past this OVER your existing sections, just to the SecondaryRoles line. You'll see I've allowed for 'RECON' and 'SWEEP'. In truth, I fully believe the 2 mission types should only be "INTERCEPT" and "CAP".

I personally dislike the use of the HVAR missiles, as they're pretty useless for the most part - your AI wingmates will probably never fire them, although you CAN hit bombers with them - I have! You do, however, have 6 20mm guns to tear up stuff with!

Also, none of my recent research (as of 12/01/07) indicates the ability to mount and use the Falcon missiles. But, I've left them on there just because....

The only other change that comes to mind (and I haven't done this myself), is to switch the cockpit over from the Skyhawk one used, to that of the Sabre-Dog. Nice single seat, early 50s style with a radar display. You will, however, have to adjust the pilot position to match that of the data inis.

Like most of the US aircraft, you simply need to remove the "NATO" pointer. I've also upped to the outer hardpoint 15 kg to make sure you don't get the 'empty' readout in the loadout screen. They were carrying just slightly less then the weight of the bomb, so now they show the weapon listed, as opposed to the blacked-out circle and empty. Even though the weapon was there, in game; it didn't show on the loadout screen.

I've also fixed the missing inner pylon for bomb loads.

Since the weapons station section on ALL the Sabres are so huge, the simplest, easiest way to fix it is just to a 'find & replace' with you text editor.

 

You'd 'find' USAF,NATO and then 'replace' with USAF.

 

Or, you can simply remove the NATO pointer by hand

MiG-17 Fresco Series "Bouncy Jiggly" Fix

Metric Cockpit Mod

Enhanced AI data

 

This will hopefuly fix the 'leaning back on it's butt problem' and 'landing gear bouncing' on the runway that has been seen on various versions of the MiG-17.

I was actually working on something else, when I stumpled across this.

There are some differences in the Fresco's data ini, that probably occured after the last round of patchs. It seem that some of the paramaters for CG, the way the game engine reads the wing chord and span, and others have been changed.

The data is taken directly from the MiG-17_DATA.INI, extracted from the objects cats. It is reccomended, but not necessary, you have this file in your stock 3rd Wires MiG-17F's folder.

 

Bouncy-Jiggly Leaning Back Fix

Metric Readout Mod

 

Another very cool thing, is if you've switched over to one of the aftermarket MiG cockpits, and the gauges (via the cockpit ini as well as visual markings) are calibrated in the metric system, add the following line to the AircraftData section:

 

UseMetricUnit=TRUE

 

This will show up in the little info box in the left corner, now reading in KPH and meters altitude. This fix also works on all the Fishbed's that use Badger and Magoo's cockpits. With thanks to the Mirage Factory for finding this; it's built into their MiG-21F13 Fishbed C.

 

Enhanced AI Data

 

To get a little more out of your AI wingmen, or for general AI enhancements, just copy/paste the following anywhere in the Data ini of any aircraft that dosen't already have it -- several 3rd Party devs do so already, so examine the data ini so you don't double up. It dosen't make them twice as smart !! :rofl:

MiG-19 Farmer Series Fixes

 

After stumbling over the differences in the Fresco series' data ini, I took a look at the MiG-19 Farmer-C, and also noticed some changes in the data. I don't exactly know WHAT it fixes, but it does seem to imporve the handling.

 

The following aircraft are effected by this change:

F-111C Amberly Pig, RAAF (by Team Vark & Co)

 

Since I got to fiddling with the 'What If...' Oz Rhino, I thought I'd revisit the Pig. I found all kinds of strangeness. So, brothers and sisters, settle in for a heap of editing...you'll be making several kinds of edits.

Let us begin...

 

First off, after almost 2 days of being driven bat-sh*t crazy trying to get the PaveTack to show, if finally occured to me that the wrong aircraft lod was being used. The one having been used is NOT equipped with the laser pod, just a bomb bay. The actual 'model' of the PaveTack is built in to the aircraft lod. Took a while to figure that out... So, assuming you have the entire Vark Pak installed, do the following:

 

1) In the F-111C folder, renamed the original F-111C.LOD to "ori_F-111C.LOD".

2) Open the F-111F folder and copy the F-111F.LOD into the F-111C's main folder.

3) Rename F-111F.LOD to F-111C.LOD. This means you don't have to edit the ini.

 

Open the data ini, and scroll down to the Fuselage section. You'll be looking for

 

SystemName[012]=BombBay

 

change that to read:

Now, this is not a perfect fix; on Anti-Ship mission, in pre-Harpoon years, you might find yourself carrying a couple of Bullpup missiles, and for some reason, Rockeye cluster bombs. I belive it's a quirk of the game engine. I'd reccomend double checking the loads, and adjusting them manually if needed to suit the mission requirements. You'll also notice the use of HARMs on the SEAD load, even though these were never actually installed. You can easily switch them out for some other standoff weapon that'll kill radars. However, I DID give you plenty of cluster bombs to drop on those nasty SAMs and AAA unit.

Since there have been some more follow questions about USAF Varks, I thought I'd take a little time to clear up a few things.

 

As it stands now, the F-111F is carrying ONLY conventional weapons...standard iron bombs and such. The only versions 'cleared' for nuclear weapons use is the FB-111A. When released, these aircraft were pretty much set up to use the Weapons Pak. Considering that the SRAM is only available there...it makes sense.

MiG-21SM Fishbed J (MF body by 3rdW, mods by madcaddie)

 

On this one, I tried a little experiment, taking a page from the Mirage Factory's way of doing things. I copied and pasted the existing 4 wing hardpoints, doubling them to 8, but they are 'split'...meaning 1 group of 4 is IRM/SAHM missiles only, and the other group of 4 is bombs, rocket pods, drop tanks or large rockets. It fixed a few problems with improper missiles showing up when they shouldn't have.

 

So, you're going to be adding stations to the inner and outer wings. Now, there is a small problem...as this is a pre-patch 4 bird (as are all madcaddie's MiG Mods), so my suggestion is to extract a new copy of the MiG-21MF's data ini, and make the changes there. This will allow you to use the newest lods, and eliminate the problems inherent in these older mods.

 

After extraction, rename the original MiG21SM_DATA.ini to, oddly enough..."ori_MiG21SM_DATA.ini". This is effectively back it up, and you'll need it to make changes from. If you browse through the original, you'll note the he has added armour values to many of the aircraft components. I'd suggest copying them over to your new data ini.

 

Rename the newly extracted data ini to match the aircraft, ie: MiG21SM_DATA.INI.

Open it up, and make the necessary changes in the operation years, copied from the original. You may also want to changed the engine sound to the MiGEngine wav from the MF Floggers - it sounds ssoo much nicer!

Now, we start adding the 'new' hardpoints, there's only 4, so it's not a big deal...

This worked realllly well during testing...the loadout screen only shows the hardpoint being used for that mission, and as they are all exactly in the same places.... :good:

The only glitch I can find, is that you don't get Aphids in the later years; I assume this is because the R-13's are available forever! You can always load them by hand. You'll also note I've ONLY used the IRMs, as opposed to using the semi-active radar Atolls. I tried that, but they disappear around 1980...so I stayed with the R-13, instead of the R-3R or R-3S.

How To Fix the MiGs from Madcaddie and howling1's MiG Paks:

 

As I stated in this post: Notes for PRC, Indian and Other Aftermarket Migs, I mentioned that one of the options is to rebuild the aircraft from scratch. This means rebuilding JUST the data ini, using the latest version, and the most current lods, in fully patched-up install of the game. Now this still poses a problem on those aircraft based off the MiG-21F, as it only has the 2 wing stations (we're speaking of the F-7B, BS and probably a couple of others). Unfortunately, nothing can be done with them. As we're given to understand the Mirage Factory is doing a version of the F-7, we can only hope they'll have the option of giving us the extra inner wing hardpoints. If/when this occurs, all the following information could be considered moot, but we got nothing but time here....

 

One of the other problems is, say for the Pakistani versions (F-7MP, MP GFS, F-7P and 7P GFS), there does not exist a 'modern' looking pit...with the necessary HUD, AG and AA radar displays. They came 'stock' from their package using the F-4J's pit, which I don't like using, as I'd rather have a single-engine gauged pit. It does work, but not as well as it could (and no disprect to Bob, as he was working with what was available at the time). I've personally been using a modified version of the A-4F, as it has an ''updated'' look to it, plus the necessary RWR. But we're going to leave them alone for now...as they should be considered special cases. They may be the subject of further posts, or upgrade/update packages that might be released.

 

A couple of posts above, you'll see some info for tweeking the MiG-17 and MiG-19 variants; this follows pretty much the same path. You'll need:

 

1) The cat extraction tool (you should already have this)

2) A fully current, totally patched up version of the game

3) Some paitence.

 

For our example, we're going to rebuild howling1's J-7 III ML. Some of these instructions are going to sound a little familiar, if you've read the post above...we're just copying more information.

 

This little bird is based off the MiG-21MF, so go ahead and extract the data in for the MF. Place the newly extracted data ini into the J-7 III ML's folder. Rename the original data ini to "ori_J-7 III ML_DATA.ini", as you'll be needing bits out of it. Rename to MiG-21MF_DATA.ini to match the original, ie: J-7 III_DATA.INI. Make sure the cases match -- the game has gotten case sensitive after the last round of patching. (double check the main ini as well)

 

Data Ini Mods:

 

Open the original, and copy the first section, [MissionData] OVER the existing section.

 

Scroll down to the sounds section, and if you want, change the engine sound to that wonderful "MiGEngine" wav that the MF supplied us with. Sounds nicer.

 

Scroll down to the fuselage section, in BOTH the new version, and the original, and copy over the flare station callouts (ie: SystemName= whatever the thing is).

 

Continue scrolling down, double checking in BOTH data inis for any other changes. I know Bob added my opening canopy mod, so check to see if it's listed as a SystemName=; should be listed in the Fuselage section. Add the [Canopy] section, if you want. You can also change your pilot figure at this time.

 

Scroll down to the WeaponsStations...

 

If you've modified the hardpoints as in my original post somewhere around Page 3 or 4 in this thread, just copy/paste that data over the existing weapons stations. You'll also want to copy over the "///Decoys" section from the original too; it gives you a total of like 4 flares!

 

Save and close...that just about does it. In essence, what we've done is take the newest, patched version of the MF; as we need the latest flight modeling, control modeling, look-up tables, etc, and bring the older version up to current standards.

 

Decals Modifications:

 

Well, since we're not using the original, pre-patch lods, most of your decals will now be in the wrong places. For a PLAAF bird like this one, it's a super easy fix.

You just copy/paste the decals ini from the MiG-21MF over into whatever Chinese skin folders you've got. Now, mind you, there is a small difference: the PLAAF puts the national insignia on the vertical tail, so you'll need to edit those decals name;

A quick check of the SF objects cat show the "VPAF" numbers are stored there; I know that WoV and WoE have them as I'm using WoE almost exclusivly. No problems should arise from this. The only reason we're using them is, they're 4 digit numbers.

 

And there you have it, kiddies....how to bring these older mod up to current standards. As for cockpits, for the most part, just stick with the Magoo & Badger MiG Pits and you won't go far wrong. I just wish the SPO-10 RWR worked.....

 

I hope to be able to 'fix' the Indian and Pakistani MiGs in a similiar manner, and release said fixes for the masses.

Fix for stock WoE Hunter FGA.9 Drop Tanks (by Wrench and PhantomIIF4)

 

Whilst creating the "What If..." IDF Hunter, I discovered a few anomolies with the stock WoE Hunter FGA.9.

 

It should be noted at this time, that there are 2 full sets of drop tanks for the Hunter; one for AD's F.6 and the other for the WoE FGA.9.

 

AD's tanks need no fixing...they're fine as they are. We're only concerned with the stock units.

 

Some of you may have noted they don't 'sit right' on the pylons, this is because the 100 and 230 gallon tanks are 'switched'. The lod names are correct, they're just in the wrong places!

 

Below is the listing for the stock WoE Hunter tanks: (*** used for some reason I can't think of right now)

We're going to use the weapons editor to fix this. You don't even need to open the weaponsdata.ini in your text editor...we can do it all from the editing window in the Wepons Editor. It's quite easy, and should only take a few minutes

 

So, open the editor, and then open the weaponsdata.ini you're going to change. Scroll down until you find the

 

Tank100_Hunter

Tank230_Hunter

 

entries (they should be righ together)

 

Open the Tank100_Hunter, and look at the editing windows. We're looking at the section called "3D Model Name". Change it to read: (note: I'm using bold text to highlight the change only)

While you're in there, you should also change the "Diameter" measurment. Change it to

 

0.48

 

(this is PhantomIIF4's fix) This will move the tank 'upwards', closer to the pylon.

 

Click "OK" to return to the weapons list screen.

 

Select the "Tank230_Hunter", and open it. We're going to do the same thing...

 

Replace the "3D Model Name" with:

 

Hunter_Tank_1

 

and, also change the diamter to the above spec:

 

0.48

 

On these inboard tanks, this is the major flaw...they sit too far down. This will fix that.

 

Hit "SAVE" to updatd the weaponsdata.dat file and then close.

 

You're done! The FGA.9 Hunter tanks will not look a LOT better, and sit pretty much where they're supposed to. The best thing about this fix is, it changes nothing in the attachmentposition of any other weapons that might use those staions

 

BTW, this fix can be applied to the stock, non-weapons pak weaponsdata.ini as well. You'll just have to extract it from the WoE objects.cat first, then leave in the /objects folder.

How to Fix Mk.82 and CBU MER loadouts (by Fast Cargo)

 

I'm surprised no one has brought this up before...the WeaponsPack adds a lot of nice weapons...but also intros some errors, especially when it comes to MER usage.

 

Here's an example:

Okay, so if you want to fix these issues...where to start. Read this post IN ITS ENTIRETY first! Remember, this is only for those installations that have the Weaponspack installed!!!

 

First, you need the CAT extractor: HERE .

 

Second, you'll need the Weaponsdata editor, available HERE.

 

Finally, BACKUP your WEAPONSDATA.INI, Mk82LD.LOD and WEAPONSDATA.DAT file!

 

Okay, lets start with the MER (Multiple Ejector Rack).

 

In the stock and Weaponspack WEAPONSDATA.INI file, there is this entry for the MER:

Note the bolded areas. The MER has a 2.5m weapon length limit...but you can place 2 bombs in a row with only 2.24m between mounting points.

 

So, use notepad and open up the WEAPONSDATA.INI file, find the MER entry, and change the LengthLimit to LengthLimit=2.24. Do the Weapons Editor dance as per the knowledge base.

 

Two methods to fix the Mk82s. One involves extracting the original LOD file. The second involves doing the Weapon Editor dance.

 

The first method is simpler overall. Use the CAT extractor on the ObjectData.cat file located in "X:/Your TW sim"/Objects directory. Find the MK82.LOD file inside and extract it. Rename the extracted file to Mk82LD.LOD. Copy the newly renamed file to your "X:/Your TW sim"/Objects/Weapons directory (you did backup your Mk82LD.LOD file in that directory first...right?) and allow it to be overwritten.

 

The second method is 'cleaner' but more intensive. Go into the WEAPONSDATA.INI, and substitute every line that says this: ModelName=Mk82LD with this: ModelName=Mk82. Save the WEAPONSDATA.INI. Then use the Weapons Editor as standard. Realise that there are a LOT of entries that use the Mk82 file...so you'll be scrolling through a lot of entries.

 

Now, to fix the clusterbombs (everything based off the SUU-30) canister.

 

A different problem here. First, here was my primary reference: Weapon Diagrams

This website had diagrams, dimensions, etc.

 

The problem is that there are 2 SUU-30 LODs. One is named SUU30.LOD and is inside the Weapons directory. It uses the SUU30.BMP file, also in that directory, as a 'skin'. As far as I can tell though, no weapons in the WEAPONSDATA.INI file reference this LOD file.

 

The other SUU-30 LOD is called SUU-30.LOD, and is located in the Objectdata.cat file. It uses the SUU-30.BMP...either in the Weapons directory or in the Objectdata.cat file.

 

In the stock TW WEAPONSDATA.INI, the cluster weapons reference the SUU-30 LOD, and have a length of 2.339 meters.

 

In the Weaponspack WEAPONSDATA.INI file, the cluster weapons also use the SUU-30 LOD file, but have a length of 2.184 meters.

 

The problem is, both length figures are correct...just depends on the subvariant! On the website it states this:

Diameter: 40.6 cm (16 in)

 

Data for SUU-30B/B:

Length: 2.1 m (6.8 ft)

Diameter: 41.1 cm (16.2 in)

 

Doh!

 

The SUU-30.LODs have an arming mechanism (an air wheel for lack of a better term) that sticks out significantly...which causes the visual conflict. The SUU30.LOD doesn't have an obvious arming mechanism, and is smaller overall...and seems to closely match the diagram for the SUU-30B/B.

 

So, there are three ways to fix this problem. The first two ways are model substitution...the last way is Weaponsdata.ini alterations that will not allow you to mount more than 3 CBUs (that use the SUU-30.LOD) on a MER.

 

The first way is simpler overall. You basically replace the SUU-30 model with the SUU30 model (the smaller, blunt nose model).

First, rename your SUU30.BMP file located in the Weapons directory to SUU30.BMP.BAK. Then, take the SUU-30.BMP file (either already in the Weapons directory, or extracted from the ObjectData.cat file) and make a copy...renaming the copy to SUU30.BMP. Next, make a copy of the SUU30.LOD file and rename the copy to SUU-30.LOD. Finally, go into Notepad, start a new file and enter the following text:

Distance=1000

 

Save the file as SUU-30.INI in the Weapons directory and you're done.

 

The second way accomplishes the same thing...just involves the Weapons Editor dance. Go into the WEAPONSDATA.INI, and substitute every line that says this: ModelName=SUU-30 with this: ModelName=SUU30. Save the WEAPONSDATA.INI. Then use the Weapons Editor as standard. Finally,take the SUU-30.BMP file (either already in the Weapons directory, or extracted from the ObjectData.cat file) and make a copy...renaming the copy to SUU30.BMP. And you're done.

 

The third method is similar to the second, except there are no copying of files. But this will make it so you can't mount more than 3 cluster bombs (that use the SUU-30.LOD) on a MER. Go into the WEAPONSDATA.INI, and for every weapon that has ModelName=SUU-30 substitute the line that says this: Length=2.184000 with this: Length=2.339000. Save the WEAPONSDATA.INI. Then use the Weapons Editor as standard.

 

This only fixes Mk82s and SUU-30s...LGBs (the smaller ones) are another issue for another post.

You'll note the use of the Iraqi version of the R-550 French IRM. I did this on purpose, as the Iraqi AA-2s disappear after a certain year; the R-550 is available through the entire service life span. And it gives you a slightly more reliable missile, and we all know they used them.
