Albatros D3 Needs Your Help!

Recommended Posts

(S!) ALL hi ;-)

Has anyone seen the new planes coming in the First Eagles expansion at

Third Wire forums, all look very nice till you take a good look at the Alb D3,

It took me a little looking at it to see why it did not look quite right and then

I finely seen why, it has a flat bottom to the body! :O) this is not correct as all

Info we have clearly shows that the Alb D3 had a rounded bottom and not flat.

So I would ask all of you to go on over to TW forum and let TK know that you

Would like to see a correct Alb, D3 for FE, this may be the last chance we have

To have a nice correct Alb D3 in FE.

I agree that it is may be a wee bit flat (that could be the lighting render tho)

The D.III did have a flatish bottom (behind the wing root anyway)

(S!) ALL hi ;-)

Yes the D3 did have a flatish bottom in the body where the bottom wing

Connected to it but from the back of the cockpit to the tail on the bottom

Of the body was more rounded and not as flat as we see it in them photos

At TW forums, I have e-mailed with TK and talked to him about this and

What I got back was they have determine it was that flat, that goes agencies

All that we know and all info we have on the Alb D3.

The Pics posted at Thirdwire do not show a fully illuminated underside. The shadow is too much contrast to be able to judge the contour of the underside. The pics that are currently posted do not look at all abnormal, other than having unusually dark shadows (typical for sunlit scenes in FE). The 3-view plans for the DIII are readily available, and I see no reason to assume tha they were not followed just as closely as similar plans for other machines.

(S!) ALL hi ;-)

You mean to tell me that if I put this marking,

post-21432-1180038327_thumb.jpg

On this D3

post-21432-1180038395_thumb.jpg

post-21432-1180038441_thumb.jpg

Then them black and yellow squares will round under like they should or any

Strips for that matter, take a look at photos of a D3 with strips that

Go under and you will see what am talking about.

Like this,

I find it hard to believe, it does not look like it will to me.

Never trust the profile artists, but always look on the original pictures.

The bottom "may" look flat because there may be border on the UV map of the plane, thats why, the shadow breaks there and creates illusion. You may email TK and ask him to send you different screenshot taken with different perspective.

Cheers!

(S!) ALL hi ;-)

I have a real photo at the bottom and the stripes on that plane

Round under like the black & yellow squares do in the profile.

Yes I have e-mailed with TK if you look a few post up and now

I come to the people, you! to make you aware of this and to get

Your opinions on it, in hopes that I may be seeing this wrong,

But I don’t think so.

I agree vDM,

the 3rdWire DIII appears to have a little too much of a crisp edge along the bottom margin of the fuselage compared to the DIII pic you show with the B&W rings around it.

BUT the 3rdWire DIII also has a slightly rounded bottom as can be seen in the last image posted by TK (look at the curve to the oil stains or seams).

So the argument (as I see it) is about whether that lower fuselage margin is too abrupt or not...

I'm not going to loose much sleep on this...

Well Bandy, if it’s that the edge is to sharp which makes it

Appear to flat then you know what that will do, is make any

Markings we put on that plane that round under like strips or

What ever not look right.

I agree that the fus could/should be more rounded. I also suspect that the appearance we see is probably a simpler way to do the design and the skins.

I just visited the site. The views are in Inside Peek not the First Eagles forum. I posted re the rounded lower fus - note that the upper fus is nicely curved. I also suggested that the prop hubs on the other A/C (DIII looks AOK) could be trimmed a bit.

We'll see. Better to get it later and get it right.

Since I am still grounded I can afford to be patient.

Without better pictures its not clear if there is a problem or not. I think B Bandy may be right. If its anything the edge is too sharp. Considering the quality of the rest of the Thirdwire models I think it just a matter of their interpretation. I doubt simplicity in design had anything to do with it.

(S!) ALL hi ;-)

My lovely wife just said to me,

To take a peace of sandpaper and give the edge a few swipes

There are three views with sections up at Sim HQ.

http://richard.ferriere.free.fr/3vues/albatros_d3_3v.jpg

which may explain all this. The sides were/are flat, the sections toward the tail are more rounded as they move aft. Everyone appears correct. What is needed seems to be a minor adjustment. Isn't that the point of early release of WIP? No one ever gets everything spot on the first time.

There are 3-views here in this thread. See the link in the second post by P10ppy. Even in your photo the shadow causes the bottom curve of the fuselage to look kind of sharp. Without a well lighted side and bottom view screen shot, its still hard to tell how much of a problem there may be. Not to worry too much, IMHO. TK has been good in the past about fixing things if he can be convinced with good evidence it needs fixing.

There are high quality photos of a replica OEF DIII being built by the Austrian Memorial Flight Association http://memorial.flight.free.fr/indexuk.html. While there were differences in the prop hub, wing roots and other aspects of the two DIII variants (OEF was faster), I do not know of any reports of variations of the fuselage cross sections.

IMHO the photos show the sharp joint forward near the wing roots and rounded aft. The images were taken before the fabric was applied.

That's the problem. The game images aren't what one would call high quality and light and shadows in a relatively low resolution screenshot aren't quite definitive.

No matter what, we are in for a real upgrade. Nothing is perfect, certainly nothing I have done.
