Programs open in Notepad?

Hi guys. i am in deep trouble. I cannot open anything on my Vista pc the normal way. in other words, everything opens via notepad and not via exe or whatever file is associated with that program. I have no idea what i did. i tried to open woi and woe and it opens via notepad. same with mediaplayer to play songs. Even recovery as well. How can this be fixed? Thanks. Is there a way to change or go to default?
