I just thought of this combination for all those dedicated simmers out there. There is a product for the Ipod called Myview, what it is, is a pair of "glasses" that contain 2 miniature screens. when worn, it gives the view of a 17 inch display. normally this is supposed to be hooked up to an ipod to watch movies on a big screen. My idea is if it can be made to work with the computer to display the computer screen, it could be hooked up with TIR and give a better experience, because it only requires you to move your head and not look out the corner of your eyes. it could give a VR cockpit right in front of you. TIR could even be set at a 1:1 ratio because you no longer have the limits of a screen.

 

Please post comments on the Plausability of this idea.

there are VR headsets available which are designed for PC use and even support stereoscopy (3D) but the price tag is beyond the average budget, and even then the resolution on the screens at best is 800x600, this would IMHO be a novelty for a few hours before the eyes get tired.

I saw something at CES 5 years ago that merged the eyeglass mounted displays with track IR so rotating your head moved the view. It was pretty awesome and I only got to play with it for about 2 minutes before the next guy in line kicked me off. I asked what the display would retail for and the guy at the booth just smiled...

Your eyes get tired anyway and people don't usually play nonstop all day. this combo only costs ~$400 compared to thousands normally spent on top of the line products.

but as you say this device is for an ipod, I don't believe that ipods have the same video interface as a pc, you then need to adapt the device, how much will that cost?

not sure, but i do know that most computers hav a line-out jack, that if configured to output the monitor through it. it may also depend on the PC. But remember you can refine my idea, this idea came to me in a sort of EUREKA! moment.

The line out jack is an audio device (isn't it?), I would be very surprised to hear that it can be done.

 

also the issue of resolution is still a factor, those devices are VGA at best, 640x480 resolution, so much detail would be lost on a screen that size, hardly what I would call immersive, as I mentioned even PC specific hardware is still only 600x800, I have researched into this before and the eye strain issue is still a big deal, viewing a standard monitor is alot easyer on the eyes than having 2 small screens placed immediately infront of the eyes, your eyes have to effectively cross to superimpose the 2 images into 1, that is where the eyes become strained.
