Seawolf Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 Today at 3PM and probably later tonight as well will be a program on the S3 Viking called "Scout" My old squadron VS27 Seawolves will be featured along with VS31. They filmed this right before NAS Cecil was closed and the squadrons were moved to NAS Jax. Good Show, check it out. also "red october" FA18vsMig29 comes on at 8pm tonight as well. Quote
+pcpilot Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 DOOOOOH! And me with my satellite down...AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! I had to go get my cruise book and see which squadron was on my old ship the Independance in 1979. It was VS-28 "the World Famous HUKKERS" VS-28 Not on your show probably but cool to look at again anyway for me, hehe. Quote
navychief Posted November 5, 2003 Posted November 5, 2003 NAS Cecil Field; now that place held a lot of memories for me. Too bad it is but a mere shell of its former greatness now. FedEx has a hub there, and the local ANG has a facility there too. Boeing has a rework facility for Hornets there also. But all the barracks are gone. No more chow hall. The medical clinic is still there, but eerily empty. My wife and I drove around the base this past June. It was sad to see entire buildings gone, and the ones still standing are either in the process of being demolished, or in a rapid state of disrepair. go see the base at: http://www.ghostbase.org/cecil/ Navychief Quote
Seawolf Posted November 6, 2003 Author Posted November 6, 2003 Just south of the east gate we had a S3B do a hard roll over after a touch and go and crash near the east gate in the pine trees. Both pilot and Copilot punched out ok, but the pilot spent a few minutes hanging in a tree before the crash crew could get there with a bucket and get him down. Now that I think about it there were a few crashes while I was there, but when you fly that much crashes will happen. Quote
firehawkordy Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 Didn't get NAS Cecil Field, but I was down the road at NS Mayport. I wonder what that looks like now. Being on the left coast I've seen NS Long Beach and RTC San Diego get razed to the ground. I took my wife through what was left of the boot camp and it was a strange feeling. At the time they were setting up for the San Diego grand prix. Last I heard a tribe of indians were trying to get the land down there for a casino. I heard Moffet Field is a ghost town too.All those developers a just drooling to that property. Quote
Seawolf Posted November 6, 2003 Author Posted November 6, 2003 Didn't Mayport get closed down as well? Thought they moved everything up to Norfolk. I know Kings Bay sub base is still going strong just north of Jax, But I though NAS Jax and Kings Bay were the only ones left open. Quote
+pcpilot Posted November 6, 2003 Posted November 6, 2003 Couldnt beleive they closed Naval Training Center San Diego. Went there for boot. Took a drive thru the place. My old barracks was still there but not much else. Heck, North Island NAS has changed a bit too, that was strange feeling also. Heard Charleston and Mare Isalnd got closed too! That was a surprise because they were such major bases. Lord, we're getting old...when your ships and bases are getting decommed...AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! Quote
Seawolf Posted November 6, 2003 Author Posted November 6, 2003 Thank Mr Clinton for that.lol I think half the Navy got discharged in June of 94.lol Quote
