UK_Widowmaker 571 Posted March 12, 2009 I posted this many months ago on SOH.... It's the Lyrics from a song, that I find quite suitable for OFF (it's from an album called Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters) "I see myself a Hero, while one wing falls away, and the dial approaches zero, in a spiralling display, My past life flashes feverishly...Lives I did not lead, Like the time I was a hero, of a weird, outlandish breed. One arm of Flesh and Muscle, and one of feathered scale, I was a hero with one wing, that was of no avail, I could only fly in circles, like a corkscrew in the sky, my one wing flapping frantically, whilst birds just glided by. I launched myself from mountains, and from the highest trees, and though I could get nowhere, just landed on my knees, But still I was a hero, with one wing more than most, almost half an angel, a whirling Holy Ghost. My Father was an Eagle, with two wings wide as sails, My Mother was the west wind witch, with grasping fingernails, she lured him from his aerie, with her twittering device, She kept him in a golden cage, and fed him field mice." Robert Newton Calvert (9 March 1945, Pretoria, South Africa - 14 August 1988) RIP

Bullethead 12 Posted March 12, 2009 Nice song. Here's a link to a bunch of old US pilot songs from WW2 and Korea. You know, the ironic kind about crashes, booze, women, etc. The whole list is down at the bottom, and there are MP3s. http://www.csufresno.edu/folklore/drinking...anted-wings.htm
Olham 164 Posted March 12, 2009 Geeze, Widowmaker - I had that album! Gave to a friend at his birthday, who desperately wanted it. How small the world is , again. (Or: how far you Brits spread your popular music... Lol!)

Rooster89 0 Posted March 13, 2009 You must've been reading my mind Widowmaker. I was thinking of starting a thread with my favorite WW1 song lyrics. Here they are: When you're soaring through the air in a Sopwith Scout And you're scrappin' with a Hun and your gun cuts out Well, you stuff down your nose 'till your plugs fall out 'Cos you haven't got a hope in the morning Well, my batman woke me from my bed I had a thick night and a very sore head So I said to myself, to myself I said Oh we haven't got a hope in the morning We were escorting Twenty-Two And hadn't a notion what to do So we shot down a Hun and an FE too 'Cos they hadn't got a hope in the morning We went to Cambrai all in vain the FE says "We must explain" "Our cameras broke, we must do it again" Oh we haven't got a hope in the morning I believe this song was written by the members of 54 Sqn. RFC. -Rooster
Bullethead 12 Posted March 13, 2009 I believe this song was written by the members of 54 Sqn. RFC. LOL, great song! I love gallows humor like that :). The authors must have been Scots. Being a good ex-pat Jacobite, I can tell the thing was sung to the tune of "Johnnie Cope": When Charlie looked the letter upon, He drew his sword and scabbard from, Come, follow me, my merry men, And we'll meet Johnnie Cope in the morning. I'll contribute the traditional WW1 pilot's song, immortalized in Errol Flynn's "The Dawn Patrol": We meet 'neath the sounding rafters The walls all around us are bare They echo the peals of laughter It seems that the dead are there So stand by your glasses steady This world is a world of lies Here's a toast to the dead already Hurrah for the next man who dies Cut off from the land the bore us Betrayed by the land that we find The good men have all gone before us With only the dull left behind So stand to your glasses steady This world is a web of lies We've drunk to the dead already So here's to the next man who dies
UK_Widowmaker 571 Posted March 13, 2009 Yes..those airmen certainly knew how to put the wind up a greenhorn in the Mess!
Olham 164 Posted March 14, 2009 A batman? I always thought, that's a comic hero. But then another (non-war) song comes to my mind: "I was Kaiser Bill's batman" Widow - could you explain to a hard-learning German airman, what a batman is?
Rooster89 0 Posted March 14, 2009 Hey Olham, a batman was an attendant that serves an officer. Prost, -Rooster
Mike Dora 171 Posted March 14, 2009 LOL, great song! I love gallows humor like that :). The authors must have been Scots. Being a good ex-pat Jacobite, I can tell the thing was sung to the tune of "Johnnie Cope": Sorry Bullethead, but as one loyal Jacobite expat Scot to another, I have to tell you that the tune was actually "D'ye ken John Peel"! Bullethead 12 Posted March 14, 2009 Sorry Bullethead, but as one loyal Jacobite expat Scot to another, I have to tell you that the tune was actually "D'ye ken John Peel"! OK, I can see that. But "...Cope in the morning" and "...hope in the morning" is too close to be a coincidence. And I've heard both sets of lyrics to the same tune, depending on how drunk everybody was, so I really can't tell which tune is supposed to go with which lyrics anyway :). To the King (over the water) and the little gentleman in the black velvet waistcoat!
