Help, cfs3config.exe is corrupt...

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Not sure if the corruption of my cfs3config.exe is related to nVidia driver update, but it happened immediately after...

I updated GPU driver (after setting restore point), restarted, and immediately went into OFF to see any benefits. On start up I got an error message saying that OFF couldn't find configoverrides.xml and prompted me to reinstall the whole game. Sure enough the file was gone from the directory path indicated.

I have a short cut to cfs3config.exe on my desktop, so I clicked on that, it opened and created a new configoverrides.xml file for me in OFF. I started to set sliders etc, but had to sleep the computer because my attention was required by family.

When I woke the computer and entered OFF the game let me go so far as initialization screen, then kicked me back to briefing screen for both QC and Campaign, over and over. NOW when I click on cfs3config.exe I get the message that it is corrupt.

I opened up CFS3 directory, and tried to copy/paste that version of cfs3config.exe into OFF (why not? it has same properties/date, and it opens no problem from CFS3...) but each time it is copied/pasted into the OFF directory, it becomes corrupt...

Is there any way to get around this? Something else missing in OFF such as a dll?

If I need a complete reinstall, can I save the pilot files and reinsert them?

OFF is so huge, advice on uninstall would be appreciated, such as cleaning up pesky residual files/folders, and defragmentation, etc.

Thank you for any assistance.

all i know for sure is that you cannot use your cfs3 config file for bhah.

There is a uninsatll for bhah . start>all programs>obd>uninstall.... Im sure it removes everything.

Ive seen posts that say when you upgrade your video, that you probabley will get a message saying your config file is out of date, and you have to run cfs3config again. Wondering if you got that.

also, birddogct has suggested that when you do upgrade your nvidia drivers, you unistall the old ones first, before installing the new ones..

here is my cfs3config.exe from my bhah. Gotta feeling you dont have yours anymore. cfs3config.rar

not sure if this is going to help you any.

There is no doubt that when you change graphics cards / or drivers that you have to go into the OFF3 config file and re do it to your tastes.

I'm no expert , but I would think that if you went into workshops and the config file from there, that you could re do it.

Perhaps someone really expert on this could do a brief step by step post for you to avoid a re install.

I would wait for a short while - someone who knows for definite will post here for you.

Thanks gents,

And thanks for the attachment, hope it works, though I suspect it will not (forever the optimist)

No, I tried to enter the config.exe from within the game, and got the same error message.

I'm at work, so will update a little later...

If it keeps becoming corrupt even when you replace it with this one, then it sounds like either you have drive corruption, or something is altering it (virus?), or you have files missing somewhere.

Check your hard drive for errors, see Q21 of the FAQ I think it goes over cleaning out OFF before reinstall under "If you have other odd errors:"

Thanks again,

Sorry to get back a bit late, but everyone at home has been sick all weekend, except me. No it ain't the swine flu, but my 5-year old had a 104+ fever between doses of ibuprofen. Kinda cuts into the flyin' time...

Anyways, I installed the config.exe, and to my amazment, it worked!!! Back in the cockpit without complete re-install!!! (Got jumped by MvR, Boelke, and Immelman in Jasta 2 and was doing well till I rammed Boelke's tail. Oh well. I didn't know they all flew together in Sept 1916...)

Did I say Thank You?!?

All this drama for a driver update, and it really hasn't added any performance benefit that I can see...

I would recommend to anyone to backup your config.xml and .exe files before driver updates. Forgive me, but I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere...

Thanks B Bandy. Normally it's fine, files and exe files do not get deleted normally, but the correct procedure for CFS3 when you have updated a video driver is to run cfsconfig.exe first to get the driver details etc read and setup your settings again, and it creates a new configoverrides.xml.

So for OFF it's the same, but slightly different as we added a menu to help run cfs3config:

Before you fly, launch OFFManager, "Workshop", run "Graphics Config", this will allow CFS3 to create a correct configoverrides.xml again. Happens with vanilla CFS3 too nothing to do with us.

could be wrong, but i think cfs3config.exe goes alot farther than the config.xml.
