big problems with installing - please help!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I am a very excited new used of OFF. I recently received my copy (Phase 3) and I pulled out my old copy of CFS3, installed it hassle free. Even played it just fine.

Then I upgraded it to version 3.1 and tried to install OFF. I got to around about 75%, where it says it's installing clmosaic.zip or something like that and it says it can't install that file, do I want to Retry, Ignore or Abort?

Well, if I click Retry, nothing ever happens, it just keeps failing to find it.

If I click Abort, the installation cancels.

If I click Ignore, the installation continues, whith the next dozen or so files requiring the exact same process. I just kept clicking Ignore, wondering what would happen.

Eventually, I get the Installation Complete message.

So I run the game with my CFS3 CD in the drive.

And it all seems to work just fine - I get the sounds and full menu access. And when I tried to do Quick Flight or a Mission, I hear "Contact..." etc and then Windows has an error as the sim appears to change resolution. The game exits back to the menu screens, which again are fully controllable and fine.

Now, that above scenario was in Vista. I tried it on XP and had the exact same installation problems and got almost identical performance when I ran the program after ignoring all the installation erros. When running the game however, XP actually told me that skins and files were missing. And when I try to start a flight on the XP machine, it tells me Setting Seasonal Textures, etc... none of which appear on the Vista machine. But eventually, a pop-up appears saying "The configuration override file is out of date. Please re-run CFS3. CFS3 will now exit, OR, one saying "Error updating Config Overrides settings - File does not exist - Reinstall OFF! C:\Documents and Settings\John\Application Data\Microsoft\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields\ConfigOverrides.xml

So what the heck do I do?

I even bought another release of CFS3 and installed that on both machines and then installed OFF over it with exactly the same results.

Any ideas here? I'd love some help and advice...

I am assuming that the errors in installation are the root of all my problems, but cannot figure out what is causing them, given that they're happening on two different machines - could I have received a faulty OFF DVD?

I'm desperate to get it working but am getting nowhere...

Just thought I'd add that (to my confusion) even after installing OFF, CFS3 still runs perfectly. I can fly the original game just fine. That suggests to me that something really hasn't worked at all with the install... right?

Or is it normal for the original game to still run?

Also, thought I'd go back and do it again to see if using the CFS3 CD instead of the installed copy as the base version would be any different (it wasn't).

But at least it gave me the opportunity to be specific about the files that are causing problems during install.

It is telling me:

Error

C:\OBDSoftware\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields\terrains\lcmosaic.zip

An error occurred while trying to copy a file:

No more data is on the tape.

Click Retry to try again, Ignore to skip this file (not recommended), or Abort to cancel installation.

I click ignore and the next files which have the same problems are:

lcmosaic.zx

linkedscenerylinepatterns.xml

meshbuilderbudgets.xml

Mildcompositescenerybudgets.xml

Period.txt

precompiledtexturebudgets.xml

Refcompositescenerybudgets.xml

scenery.zip

scenery.zx

SurroundCityMask1.dds

SurroundCityMask1.xml

terdata.zip

terrdata.zx

texturecachebudgets.xml

texturingmask.dds

trenchlandclassmask.dds

trenchlandclassmask.xml

TrenchMask1.dds

TrenchMask1.xml

vectordatalinings.xml

vectordetailtexture.dds

VillageMask1.dds

VillageMask1.xml

VillageMask2.dds

VillageMask2.xml

And these files were apparently supposed to appear in

C:\OBDSoftware\CFSWW1 Over Flanders Fields\terrains2\

cfs3hyl.zip

cfs3hyl.zx

cfs3msh2.zip

cfs3msh2.zx

And after I click ignore on each of those files, which takes about seven minutes.... the installation continues just fine... but, as said, the game is unplayable.

Installing BHaH doesn't/shouldn't affect your CFS3 install, so its not surprising that you can run it. Did you follow all the install tips in this link: http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?showtopic=37490? Also look over the FAQs: http://www.overflandersfields.com/FAQ.htm#...on_and_settings

Its possible you may have a bad BHaH DVD. Try contacting Polovski...

p.s. one other thing you may want to try. Copy all the files on the BHaH DVD to a temp directory and see if you can install from that diectory...

Sounds like a dodgy DVD or your DVD drive is having trouble reading a track on there.

Just a couple of comments..

you cant copy files from a cfs3 cd for a bhah installation only because the cd's are not patched (usually) to 3.1

and the config out of date is a simple fix . All you have to do when you get that is run your cfs3config.exe in the obd folder and it will rebuild your files.

None of this is going to fix your problem, unfortunaly.

You might want to try getting alchohol120, make an image of your bhah dvd to your hard drive, and then mount the image file, and try to install from the image file.

Thanks for your responses.

I do have a CD version with V1.3 of CFS3 because when I first tried installing OFF, I was hoping that my old version of CFS3 was the weak link.

So I went out and bought the XPLOSIV release, which is 1.3.

So I have tried loading the CFS3 files from an installed version, and from the CD, I've tried copying the OFF files to the hard drive and creating an image of the disc before installing but no method seems to work.

I seriously think that it is just now a matter of digging up the old email with my order number and sending an email to support because it must be a faulty OFF DVD with those specific files corrupted or missing or something.

I have now tried it on four different computers - Vista, XP, 64 bit, 32 bit, super computers, out-of date-computers... but I'm getting the exact same issue on every one of them in every disc drive.

So support, here I come...

Installing Phase III is supposed to be a straight foreward routine, ONLY after certain things are done with CFS3, patching CFS3 to version 3.1, then running CFS3 once to make folders which OFF utilizes. Humor Me, try it ONCE that way, then run for support.

PS actually there's no reason to go this far, but people in the past, have been told to fly the P47. All's you need do is See the P47, then close CFS3. Whichever

Tried it. Humored you. Made myself cry. Failed again.

Even flew the P47.

Just wanted to mention that I'm having the same problems. I even tried reformatting my computer and reinstalling windows and everything. CFS3 works fine (3.1a) but I still can't get BHaH working. Phase 2 worked when I had that installed. I got my BAaH copy last week. Seems like maybe a few bad discs got out.

As always, if the disk seems faulty, email support with your order number and details and we'll try to help. iamjohnsname is I think up and running now.

Best way to test is to copy the files off the DVD, if it fails on a file then it's likely faulty or your DVD drive is having trouble.
