OK, so I took a look in some SF2 campaign.ini and campaign_data.ini files, and all USAF units in the .ini file call out unit ID=1 from the data.ini file, and all USN call out unit ID=4.

Does this mean that all those USAF air units use the same unit ID entry for weapons, supply, base area, etc (from the data.ini), and the aircraft type and squadron is determined by the text in the .ini file?

If so I guess that makes things a little easier... but very different!

Yeah, that's they way the old WOx campaigns are.

But in SF2 (not vietnam or europe), there are over 80 flyable squadrons in the campaign1.ini file that all show up in game, but only 46 air units in the campaign1_data.ini file (that's including red air units too).

I testing out some edits right now...

There's 126 Flyables in "Rolling Thunder" SF2V. 51 USAF. 57 USN and 18 USMC. 65 in Linebacker I and 44 in Linebacker II. My tests have shown that TK upped the Flyables for a "Nation" From 0-999.

So I confirmed this morning that you can have several player units in the "campaign".ini file reference the same "unitIDxxx" in the "campaign"_data.ini file. I think they do have to be the same aircraft, but you can have different squadrons. This does two things:

1. Makes it easy to edit player units or add player units to campaigns. You can just add something to the .ini file and leave the _Data.ini alone. Or, likewise, to make all the USN units fly off carriers, I just had to add the carrier info to one unitID entry in the data.ini file instead of 30. WAAAAYYYY easier.

2. You can have lots of squadrons available for a player to choose from, but you don't have that many air units in campaigns, and therefore don't need to add as many enemy air units. In other words, lots of options for the player without having to create a battle of epic proportions.

Extract them from the MissionData*.cat files.

thanks got them

what i have in mind is to edit one sqn (or preferably create a fictional one), start them off in say F100's then upgrade through various other types of aircraft say 105's then F4's kinda thing..maybe bring the start date forward into say 64 and start with skyraiders to give a sort of airwar intensity increasing...i would probally pick an airbase and put the different types and dates of the aircraft that flew from it... for example YANKEE station and then put in some dates and types of some aircraft that flew from the carriers

i think you get the idea...

is this possible by just editing this file ?

Hmm, I'm not into campaigning yet, so I'll let the gurus answer that. Check the KB for tutorials though, and lots of good threads about campaign development around here.

No. Doesn't need to go back to a .CAT.

First, make sure it's in the SF2V folder in you documents folder, not in the actual game folder. Then you should start with campignv1.ini and campaignv1_data.ini. Then start renaming.

Also, if your new folder is called Barrel Roll, the .ini inside has to be named exactly the same. Also, I don't think the game like campaign folders with spaces in the names.

Open up the files and you should be able to figure out the relationship between the two, and then make sure all the naming and such is correct.

I could go on and on here, but the best thing would be for you to read up here: http://bunyap2w1.com/campaigntut.htm (from the CombatAce knowledge base forum).

Chief, If You get a Message that's related to .Dll's, It's My experence over the Years that Something is missing. If something is Wrong or Wrong Data, It would simply CTD. Not giving You a Message. But if You are getting a Windows Message stating something releated to the Campaign.dll, Then a Item is Missing. A .INI perhaps, Or a Model or Texture Missing.....Give it the once over.....

Still getting the Message Chief?

If it was a CampaignScreen.Bmp missing, It would give You a Message stating there was a Problem with the CampaignScreen.dll in the Menu Folder. That's where editted CampaignScreen.Bmp's go......

Cat files are in your installation folder (main game folder)

The one in MyDocs is the Mod folder. So what you do is, you add aircraft/missions/campaigns/stuff to your Mod folder.

To make a new campaing, create it under MyDocs/Campaigns/NewCampaign and copy over the stock inis extracted from the cats. Rename as needed. Hope that helps.

The point of what I said was this:

In the old WOx games, you add modded files/folders to the main game folder where the game is installed. But, with the newer SF2 series, the game creates a whole separate set of folders in (for me, anyway) My Documents/Thirdwire/Strike Fighters 2 Vietnam. If you're adding a modded campaign, you will have to create a Campaigns folder, and place your new campaign folder/files in there.

Take a look in the Knowledge base section of the forum. It has a thread (that I linked to earlier) that goes over campaign editing and a thread that goes into great detail about how the folder structure works with the new versions of the game.

ok done that ant the campign shows up as "barrel Roll"

so i then edit both campaign files to change the 12TFS to another aircraft type (flyable B-57B then stock F4C)

but it always shows up as an F105D

so thier must be something else somewhere

thought it must be the Squadronlist.ini which is not in the flightfolder as indicated in the KB but in the mission1.dat folder in SF2V

so adding or changing an aircraft type in a campaign may not be as indicated by the KB for SF2V

ongoing
