*Fast Eagle* 0 Posted December 6, 2002 Hey all, I asked about this at sim hq and got mixed feelings on the subject. Why not try to put the tomcat in this game? It was in service during the games era and flew CAP in vietnam. I have all the specs and technical data if anyone wants to give it a go. Please post your opinion on this The F-14 entered the fleet in 1973, replacing the F-4 Phantom IIin 1986 If we are going for realism then this is a must
Guest Ranger332 Posted December 6, 2002 Background: The F-14 entered the fleet in 1973, replacing the F-4 Phantom II. The F-14B, introduced in November 1987, incorporated new General Electric F-110 engines. In 1995, an upgrade program was initiated to incorporate new digital avionics and weapon system improvements to strengthen its multi-mission competitive edge. The F-14D, delivered in 1990, was a major upgrade with F-110 engines, new APG-71 radar system, Airborne Self Protection Jammer (ASPJ), Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS) and Infrared Search and Track (IRST). Additionally, all F-14 variants were given precision strike capability using the LANTIRN targeting system, night vision compatibility, new defensive countermeasures systems and a new digital flight control system. Date Deployed: First flight: December 1970 Yes your correct about the entry date but we havent gotten all the jets ands planes in yet for the times we have now were still missing the Skyraidier the tweety and meny other important aircraft of that era,not to mention rotrywing. Id say its far down the list of to do but in time .(note even though the F-14 replacd the F-4 in 73 most nations still used the F-4 as a primary fighter/bombereven into the late 80s. And rember the story line a third world country fighting another third world, and even employing Mercs in the Special Operations Wing. In Strike Fighters, you will be able to fly for the U.S. Air Force or the U.S. Navy/Marines, all in support of Dhimar, the "Good Guy" nation. In addition, in a unique twist, you will also be able to fly as a mercenary pilot for a special Dhimaran Special Operations Wing. This will allow for maximum flexibility in aircraft, mission and weapon selection without the restraint dictated by a historical order of battle. We havent even gotten the first patch ,and just recived the first terraine changes. Its a start Rember we have the possablity to go from 1956 to present in this game that covers a lot of ground. Not shooting your idea down just think we have along way to go jut to cover what we got sofar.
*Fast Eagle* 0 Posted December 6, 2002 note even though the F-14 replacd the F-4 in 73 most nations still used the F-4 as a primary fighter/bombereven into the late 80s true, but these other countries are not in the game, and aside from that Isreal took stock of 14 f14a in June of '74 so the theory of other nations interests in no good for the only arguement...IMHO And you are right, there are many nations that still use the F-4 as fighter/bombers to this day. Guest Ranger332 Posted December 6, 2002 yes the IDF took the F14 but it wasent used for offencs defence only rember your talking about a country that had to vaLUE THE JET OVER THE PILOT AS THEY WERE SO SHORT OF AIRCRAFT SO YES IT DOSE (I WAS IN THE ARMY THEN SO I KNOW HOW THE "CLIMATE" WAS THEN. I was A LRRP attached to 101ABN. Something else to consider the US wont commit its best Aircraft untill an area is secure. example the USAF would not sent in Aircraft into Saudi untill the "low Tec" roterywings went in and cleared a path through the radar warning net.(8 Apaches led in by Ground teams attacked the radar warning sites firing the first shots if the war)
*Fast Eagle* 0 Posted December 6, 2002 USAF ---------- acronym for United States Air Farce lol A little inter-service rivalry Oh and thats the air force, not the Navy. We send the cats first
Guest Ranger332 Posted December 6, 2002 Fact NO AIRCRAFT to inclued the Navy unmanned Tomahawk intered enemy airspace until the radar site where "taken out". Nothing entered untill the radar cone was hit The company mottoes are as follows: HHC- "Regulators", A Co- "Blackwidows", B Co- "Phantoms", C Co- "Wizards". As the Iraqi troops invaded Kuwait in August of 1990, the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) was given the order to deploy troops in support of "Operation Desert Shield". Although very young in its development, 9-101st was selected to command and experience its first rendezvous with destiny. Task Force 9-101 was selected as the first assault aviation element from the 101st to deploy to Southwest Asia and participated in all major operations including the insertion of pathfinders supporting the initial strike against Iraqi early warning radars On 10 January 1991, Task Force Normandy conducted its final rehearsal and prepared to depart for Al Jouf in western Saudi Arabia. At 0238 hours on 17 January 1991, Task Force Normandy fired the "first shots" of the Allied Offensive, destroying two Iraqi early warning/ground control intercept radar sites. This opened a radar-black corridor to Baghdad and validated years of training, preparation, and hard work. Thus, also marking the beginning of Operation Desert Storm. N42-Hollywood 0 Posted December 6, 2002 Remember this as well... Just because the Tomcat STARTED coming into service in 1973, it wasn't REPLACING the Phantom until the late '70's. The Phantom went all the way up to F-4S and J models with the Navy and Marine Corps respectively and was beginning to be phased out in the early 80's. In 1973 the Navy had fewer than 20 Tomcats and still only had around 50 in 1974. There's always a 3-4-5 year period of phase-in while a new aircraft comes online. When the F-22 FINALLY starts getting phased in next year it will still be another 10-15 years after that, that the F-15 Eagle will be fully retired.
*Fast Eagle* 0 Posted December 6, 2002 Very true. Very true indeed, though I'd still like to fly one in the game. I have a 3d structural model I made with 3ds max, but I dont know how to apply proper values to the thrust and things like that for this game
Guest Ranger332 Posted December 6, 2002 check with the dueces they did the terraine for SFP1 but most are working on the aformentioned jets, but maybe they can piont you in the right direction Another "pilot" CRAB02 think he can help u
Guest PhantomWarrior Posted December 7, 2002 dont think the 14 flew cap in "THE NAM" think it was restricted to Europe and stateside duty then http://www.voodoo.cz/tomcat/info.html still looking but this is first engagment i could find 19 August 1981. Libya. Khadafi sends two Sukoi Su-22 fighter jets to take on a couple of United States fighter jet over the Gulf of Sidra. F-14 Tomcats from the carrier USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) shot down the 2 Libyan Su-22 Fitter aircraft during the encounter. On 10 October 1985, 4 F-14 Tmcats from the aircraft carrier USS SARATOGA (CV 60) forced an EgyptAir Boeing 737 to land at Sigonella Air Base in Sicily. The airliner was carrying the 4 terrorists who hijacked the cruise ship ACHILLE LAURO and killed an American. On January 15th, 1986, Khadafi challenges the US Naval forces by sending two MiG-23 Floggers to test the American military and find out how far they could push the US. The MiG's vectored on two A-6 Intruder's, after which the A-6's turned away, and two F-14 Tomcat's on CAP were sent to meet the MiG's head-on. Previous encounters with the Libyan Air Force resulted with the Libyan aircraft turning tail, and returning back to Libyan airspace. This encounter was not going to end so easily. What is probably the most publicized air-combat sequence took place and lasted over 6 minutes, an eternity to the pilots and RIO's flying the two Tomcat's involved in this battle. The end result was still the same, however. US-4, Libya-0. On 4 January 1989, 2 F-14 Tomcat from the carrier USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67), then off the island of Crete in the Mediterranean, intercepted 2 Libyan MiG-23 Flogger-E aircraft and downed them both, 1 with a radar-guided Sparrow AAM and the other with an IR-seeking Sidewinder. The US pilots claimed to have seen 2 parachutes. In early February. The Tomcats took part in Operation Desert Storm providing CAP (Combat Air Patrol) for bombers and other aircrafts as well as performing TARPS (Tactical Air Reconnaissance Pod System) missions. 100 F-14s flew 3,401 sorties as Combat Air Patrol (CAP) aircraft from 5 carriers during the air assault on Iraqi targets that began Operation Desert Storm; another 781 sorties were devoted to TARPS. One F-14 was gunned down by ground fire, but no other F-14 was lost. Only one combat kill was credited to a Tomcat using the AIM-9 Sidewinder air-to-air missile to target down an Iraqi Mi-8 "Hip", a Soviet-made transport helicopter. The rapid dismemberment of the Iraqi air defense system by coalition air attacks grounded virtually all Iraqi aircraft, leaving the F-14s with few aerial targets. In late 1995, the F-14 Tomcat took on a new, and completely different role in military combat over targets in Bosnia...they became bombers. Dubbed "Bombcat's", these new bombers dropped LGB "smart bombs" while other aircraft painted the targets with lasers. Ill look for more

*Fast Eagle* 0 Posted December 7, 2002 dont think the 14 flew cap in "THE NAM" think it was restricted to Europe and stateside duty then Vietnam War The F-14 came to late for the Vietnam war and only one deployment about USS Enterprise (CVAN-65) with CVW-14 was made from 17 September 1974 to 20 May 1975. Even though VF-1 and VF-2 Tomcats flew combat air patrols over South Vietnam as part of Operation Frequent Wind, F-14s didn't score any MiG kill. The following squadrons belonged to Carrier Air Wing 14: VF-1 F-14A VF-2 F-14A VA-27 A-7E VA-97 A-7E VA-196 A-6A, KA-6D VAQ-137 EA-6B HS-2 SH-3D VAW-113 E-2B RVAH-12 RA-5C VQ-l Det 65 EA-3B On 29 April 1975, Commander Task Force 76 received the order to execute Operation Frequent Wind, the evacuation of U.S. personnel and Vietnamese who might suffer as a result of their past service to the allied effort. Later that day, many evacuees had been cleared from the U.S. Defense Attache Office and the U.S. Embassy. This aerial exodus was paralleled by an outgoing tide of junks, sampans, and small craft of all types bearing a large number of the fleeing population. On the afternoon of 30 April, Task Force 76 moved away from the coast. This ended the U.S. Navy's role in the 25-year American effort to aid the Republic of Vietnam in its fight for survival. Guest PhantomWarrior Posted December 7, 2002 but key word NO KILLS I listed the eairlyest kills i could find, and rember ground fighting for the US ended about 1973(except for a few remaining Army units ,and the USMC embassey duty troop that were the last out. With the offical ending listed at 1975
*Fast Eagle* 0 Posted December 7, 2002 You are correct on the Cat's first kills, both which came from VF 41 Black Aces, thus making them the only squadron with air to air kills in the Cat, until Desert Storm, as mentioned, this kill came from one of two Cats flying in VF 1 Wolfpack squadron. This kill was made by the CO of the squadron
Guest Ranger332 Posted December 7, 2002 the term "pilot" refers to cyber flyers and the reason the F-4 choice is its longevity From 1958 until its U.S. service retirement in 1996, it flew more than 17 million miles - the equivalent of one aircraft flying continuously for more than 2,000 years. OH MY WORD SOMEONE DIG UP PHANTOMWARRIOR how ya doing bud
*Fast Eagle* 0 Posted December 7, 2002 On Oct. 7, 2002 aircraft carriers (CVN-65 with VF-14 & CVN-70 with VF-213) launched long-range, heavy loaded F-14 and medium-range F/A-18 strike fighters day and night while the Air Force sent long-range bombers deep into Afghanistan. Targets were terrorist bases, weapons and vehicles, training camps and Taliban military units. Additionally, the attacks were placed as a front-line pace maker for the so called "Northern Alliance". This group of anti-Taliban Afghans moved from northern Afghanistan down south in their long lasting fight against the Taliban regime. As in any war, the attacks caused also civilian casualties among the Afghan population, but as far as it is known these were limited to a small number. On Oct. 9, 2002 VF-14 led the first long-range tactical air strike, flying over 1,700 miles round trip to Mazar-e Sharif, where Taliban aircraft were destroyed on the ground. Numerous strikes with precision guided ammunition followed from VF-14, VF-41, VF-102, VF-143, VF-211 and VF-213. Latest combat stats that are nonclass As for the first tactical long range strike, that is erroneous, as during DS B-52's flew from Barksdale AFB, 14,000 miles, to Iraq on the first nite of the war. They were refeuled 4 times on the way
Guest Ranger332 Posted December 7, 2002 rgr and do you know how some of the precision guidance is acheaved? Special Operations Troops with a "colt" system,If the target is improtant they dont trust it to the onboard laser systems they send Special OPS/Army or Usmc. to "paint it " some of the non painted targets caused the Fratracides that happened there.
*Fast Eagle* 0 Posted December 7, 2002 rgr that. During Desert Storm, Seals painted targets as well as USMC and US Army Spec Ops
JData 0 Posted December 13, 2002 Hi! The VF41 isn't the only squad that got A2A via VID, don't discount the VF32. Although during the Libya fiasco, there were numerous encounters but were turned away. jd
Dark_Knight_667th 0 Posted December 13, 2002 Being one of those Spec Ops on the ground, yeah, we painted our share of Sam Sites and a few other things as well. The cats could drop em just as good as the Eagle E's DK
