I heard "Brothers in Arms" on the radio and was suddenly overcome with a mix of emotions I couldn't handle. My wife found me crying in the kitchen. The song reminds me of my tour of duty in Bosnia in 1994, it reminds me of both happiness and utter despair. It reminds me of comradery, brutality of war and the inadequacy of the international community. It reminds me of fellow soldiers fighting, hurting and dying for the cause. It reminds me of all those soldiers coming home again, bringing a piece of war back home deep in their hearts and heads. It reminds me of pride, proud of being part of a select group of individuals. Proud to be a veteran. For all of you out there with whom I share that feeling, and for all of you who stand beside us. Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms. Peace for you all, good fortune and a quiet and untroubled life. You deserve it. Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms These mist covered mountains Are a home now for me But my home is the lowlands And always will be Some day you'll return to Your valleys and your farms And you'll no longer burn To be brothers in arms Through these fields of destruction Baptism of fire I've watched all your suffering As the battles raged higher And though they did hurt me so bad In the fear and alarm You did not desert me My brothers in arms There's so many different worlds So many different suns And we have just one world But we live in different ones Now the sun's gone to hell And the moon's riding high Let me bid you farewell Every man has to die But it's written in the starlight And every line on your palm We're fools to make war On our brothers in arms Iwan "Muesli" Ruedisueli Edited December 25, 2009 by Muesli
