RAF_Louvert 101 Posted November 16, 2010 . Greetings All, It has been little more than a year since I hosted the "What's My Plane" contest here in the OFF forums, (in which our own Herr Olham was the grand prize winner), and I believe it might be time for another such event. I am toying with a few ideas as to the nature of the new contest, but I would like thoughts from you folks. Remember that I've already done planes and their related bits and pieces in the last event, and aces in the one before that way back on the old RB3D "Wings of Valor" forums. Now for the prize, I am going to put up my 1968 hardbound copy of Duncan Grinnell-Milne's classic, "Wind in the Wires". This is a very clean, ex-library copy that will show well on your WWI aviation book shelf, and if you've never read this wonderfully written account of a young man's WWI experiences in the RFC and RAF, (as well as in a German POW camp for two years), you will be in for a treat. Grinnell-Milne is one of my favorite contemporary authors of the genre and this work along with his "An Escaper's Log" are two of the best Great War personal accounts around. So, voice your ideas and thoughts for the new contest and I will give consideration to any and all. Cheers! Lou .
Dej 17 Posted November 16, 2010 (edited) Cool! I was hoping you'd do another, Lou. Enjoyed the last one immensely. Wasn't privy to your 'Aces' contest so don't know if this was covered by it but how about 'What's my Paintjob'? Pictures of ace and or unit skins or parts thereof - some of which one could find in the OFF files but also other more obscure ones that aren't... like the attached, by way of example? [EDIT]And being as I wouldn't need to be competing I'd be happy to help wth the running of it[/EDIT] Edited November 16, 2010 by Dej
RAF_Louvert 101 Posted November 16, 2010 . Dej, that is one of the very ideas on my short list, right down to the title! And I appreciate the offer of assistance, but why would you not compete Sir? .
Dej 17 Posted November 17, 2010 (edited) . Dej, that is one of the very ideas on my short list, right down to the title! And I appreciate the offer of assistance, but why would you not compete Sir? . I have 'Wind in the Wires' in a very battered paperback. I wouldn't want to deprive someone who hasn't read it of the chance. It's on my list of 'classics' to revisit because I do remember I liked the honest writing style... but I've so many new books to get through finding time is an issue. My Amazon wish list of WW1 and WW2 stuff is 21 pages long and the family whittle it down on a regular basis. I'm reading 'Band of Brigands' (recommended) at the same time as 'Private 12768' (also recommended) and 'My Boy Jack' (too early to recommend, but been on the list along time) thus with the corrsponding WWILFing I've no time... ARGGHH!! But I do have all my Osprey profiles scanned to PDF thus can make some offer of help with the above if needed. RAF_Louvert 101 Posted November 17, 2010 . Understood Dej. And your book wish list length sounds like mine, though mine tends to be almost exclusively WWI as I did the WWII studies about 20 years back. Thank you again for your kind offer of assistance Sir, but it would appear there is no interest in another trivia contest, what with 80+ views and only you and I trading comments. Ah well, c'est la vie, c'est le guerre. Peut-être une autre fois. .
Olham 164 Posted November 18, 2010 No, that's not quite right, Sir. It's only a very wrong moment for me. Too much to do, plus the gallopping Christmas at the horizon. Personally, I would much prefer the time after New Year. Also, I didn't write anything, because I had no other ideas to offer. But I'm thinking about it. RAF_Louvert 101 Posted November 18, 2010 . No worries Olham, I have plenty to keep me busy as well mein freund. As I said in my previous post, perhaps another time. .
Ratatat 0 Posted November 18, 2010 Hi guys, I think it is a very neat idea. Like Olham I didn't post only because I couldn't offer up a better subject for the contest. I'm sure that's the case with the majority of people viewing this thread. After all who wouldn't like to win a contest? But Olham makes a very good point in that we are approaching one of the busiest times of the year for people. However, if I think of something brilliant for the contest I'll be sure to chuck it in to the ring! Ratatat P.S. If there's ever a contest for someone's used, but well-loved TrackIR I'm in like a dirty shirt!
RAF_Louvert 101 Posted November 18, 2010 . I'll revisit the contest idea sometime after the first of the year. Who knows, maybe a TrackIR will makes it way to the prize list by then. .
Rickitycrate 10 Posted November 18, 2010 (edited) Enjoyed the first contest immensely Lou. I have no thoughts to make it better. You conducted the first one with flying colours. Edited November 19, 2010 by Rickitycrate
Olham 164 Posted November 18, 2010 I'll revisit the contest idea sometime after the first of the year. Who knows, maybe a TrackIR will makes it way to the prize list by then. Wowzers! Your pizes are first choice, Lou. Hope you didn't read my post as of having no interest in the contest. Your WW1 Quiz was top notch, Sir, and I was quite aware, that you had invested a lot of time and care into getting it right all the way through - thanks again for that, it was great. Being the winner of your fine "Pour le Merite" (which was such a wonderful idea for a prize!), I must say I loved the competition a lot - and I learnt more about our subjects here. Lou, I just like to speak honestly (saves time and worries), and I feel very hassled recently, and my experience says, it won't go away until Christmas and New Year's time. But if enough people want to do it now, I would step back, as I have been a winner already. Excuse all newbies for not answering here, as they do not know at all, what it is about. You should definitely make a kind of announcement poster for them, to get the idea. Seeing your book design, I know you would come up with something funny. RAF_Louvert 101 Posted November 18, 2010 . This is one of the core problems of forum conversations: No way of knowing for sure the other person's intended meaning, or their feelings at the time of posting. Let me assure everyone that I am not upset, offended, or otherwise slighted by any lack of posting and/or interest in my idea. It takes a whole lot to get me even a little miffed, and nearly impossible to do so with a post or lack of same. My idea of another contest was simply that, and idea, and I put it out there to see if there was interest in it as the last one seemed to be very well enjoyed by those who participated. I agree completely that just before the holidays is not the time to initiate said contest, I was looking more for input right now to see which direction to take the proposed event. As to your idea Olham of a poster and/or annoucement, I was planning something along those lines once the details had been sorted out. Please, do not think I am offended here by lack of input. My previous comments were nothing more than a verbal shoulder shrug to be interpreted as "Eah, maybe later than." Maybe I need to use more emoticons. Any-hoooooo, no worries Gents. Time for me to get back on the road. I've miles to go before I sleep. Cheers! Lou . .
UK_Widowmaker 571 Posted November 18, 2010 Great Idea, and a lovely prize!...I know very little about WW1 if I'm honest, but would enjoy 'having a go' nonetheless
Slartibartfast 153 Posted November 18, 2010 I am like that old chap Widowmaker lack of knowledge first class idea old man... I will admit I spent yesterday trying to think of ideas but this mad thing called work kept getting in the way totally uncalled for if you ask me... Anyway I have no ideas my knowledge of WW1 is a bit vague in places I know more of the ground war than the air war...
Olham 164 Posted November 18, 2010 (edited) RAF_Louvert: It takes a whole lot to get me even a little miffed... Hihi, funny word: miffed! In German probably the equivalent is "muffelig" - which must also look funny to you. Good to know, that you are a "sturdy battle horse" there, and true - we often can't "see" how another expresses his sentences. I often try to imagine the face UncleAl might have been making, when he said this or that. Have a good return, Lou - take care!
