gordohk 1 Posted March 23, 2011 Does anyone have an opinion on this book? High in the Empty Blue: The History of 56 Squadron, Rfc/Raf 1916-1920 [Hardcover] by Alex Revell
shredward 12 Posted March 23, 2011 Best written unit history of the Great War, bar none. Cheers, shredward
Rugbyfan1972 1 Posted March 23, 2011 Best written unit history of the Great War, bar none. Cheers, shredward I will second Shredward on that sentiment, it is the most detailed history of any since unit in any conflict that I have come across. The hardback version has 397 pages covering the squadron during the war, comprising combat reports from every patrol flown by the squadron, and various other sundry items of interest about the personnel and the SE5 &SE5a aircraft that they flew. Pages 398 to 445 cover other items such as squadron markings and just about anything that you could want to know about the personnel who served in the squadron. If you buy the book you will not be disappointed. Thanks Rugbyfan1972

RAF_Louvert 101 Posted March 24, 2011 . I agree completely with the above comments. I recently bought a beautiful copy on eBay for $50. And, when Alex learned I had purchased it he sent me an autographed card I could place in it. It is an outstanding book by an outstanding WWI aviation historian. Cheers! Lou .
