I want to do exactly that, and I fell in love with Google sat pics from Chipilly. I will check out, if it is really so beautiful there. What I need to know: which British and French sqdns are flying from Chipilly in OFF, and what time of the war? I don't want to switch through them all manually to find out. Chipilly, anyone? Quote

Thanks, guys - the Tripes are never long there, it seems; so it may become 54 with the Pup; as soon as my other Pup campaign with No. 46 Sqdn, RFC, will end. But I would like to survive long enough to transfer to Filecamp Farm with Arthur Gould Lee and the boys - he describes the place almost like "paradise with Nissen huts". There are also 8 and 9 Naval, but I was not referring to those; I meant RFC 8 and 9. They may not be in OFF, but they were stationed at Chipilly. I provided you information from some printed sources I have, but I've not gone through all the squadrons in OFF to verify if they are there. I leave that up to you. . Quote

The winter of '16-17 was particularly harsh in the Somme Valley and in Mason's book about the Esc Layfayette they were having to scour the countryside for heating wood. I'm not sure how enthusiastic I'd be about time travelling back to those years and staying at a Somme airfield. B-B-bbbrrrrr! I did do a Google map virtual tour of the area and it's got some great small back roads to tour, and most of the more renowned airfields are within a days ride of Chipilly. I can see a Northern France-Picardie bike tour in my future. Quote
