My family was eligible for food stamps and used them while my father was in the Navy... that's how low Navy enlisted pay was in the late 60's. He got out and got a job as a Tampa police officer and was able to rent a house and get off food stamps.

Stupid article title...the US has had the food stamp program for a long time.

 

When I was a young kid, we were on food stamps for a while after my father retired from the USAF. However, we didn't stay on it very long after he got work and my mom finished school and got a good job. We used the program for it's primary intent...a hand up, not a hand out.

As a SrA and SSgt, my family was eligible for WIC assistance. It helped with milk, juice, cereal, etc.

 

I think the article's intended message was that the lower and remaining middle class are becoming poorer and having to ask for more assistance.

I think the problem people have is when they see people using them that are then spending the money they do have on unnecessary things. In other words, they're getting the iphones and cigarettes and beer on their own money because they have the food stamps to pay for the stuff they need to eat. Meanwhile, those making too much for that, yet still not making that much, have to forego getting the luxuries because they have to pay their $100/week for food.
