I know Mythbusters did a special on this, but I also remember a report sometime after the re-invasion of Iraq won a world cup qualifier and 11 people were injured from rounds returning to Earth after being fired into the air. 3 people died if I recall. A bullet dropped from shoulder height is also supposed to hit the ground at the same time as a bullet fire straight and level too, but that isn't necessarily so either...
