In the one area where the British actually managed to breach the German lines (and quite handily) they deployed a huge flame projector underground in its own tunnel system with a pop-up head/nozzle that bathed the German trenches with a napalm-like mixture. I always thought flamethrowers (the mobile back-pack version)were a German invention. 'Seems the Lusitania made a very big impression on Captain Livens.
