Those MiG's carry the Exocet anti-ship missile, they can fire that missile from 100 miles away! *raises hand* - uh, sir, I'm sure they can fire it from 100 miles away, but what do they expect to hit at more than 2x the missile's range? EDIT: Well, the model they used back then...

You're everyone's problem. I don't like you because you're DANGEROUS. And yeah, I heard TGII got shot down because Cruise wasn't interested. I was just hoping no one tried to restart it, I just can't see it working in this day and age.

BLASPHEMY!!! EDIT: Though I have to say, I'll probably implement that avionics mod because on the rare instances that I do fly Red Air, it gets REAL frustrating having to close to like 10NM to track anything with the Foxbat! -

Gaggle O' Turkeys. Back from a big-ass furball against Su-27SK's, two MiG-29's show up on the way back. Having shot all of our AIM-54's, and most of our AIM-9's, I had no qualms about them turning around and leaving us alone about 50NM away. I'd have probably chased them down with their backs turned, had all my wingies not called "Bingo"... -
I also never realized just how many fjords there are in Iceland until I read Njal's Saga a few weeks ago. I swear, everyone is going from one fjord to another, and the Monty Python fjord references have become about 10x funnier.

From what I understand it's "heaVier than air," so VF is Heavier than air Fighter, VA is Heavier than air Attack, etc. Gotta recall that NAVAIR included/s baloons. I could be wrong. EDIT: also, V, as GBNavy said, is Fixed Wing; helos start with H, so HS, etc. -
How to read the ODS F-14A HUD information

None taken. Also of note, seems my reply might've been taken a bit offensively; there are certain limitations in the game that prevent systems to be worked in either completely or at all. I did not mean any offense to JSF_Aggie or Crusader with my "not modeled" part. Honestly that HUD is the most accurate representation I've seen of a Tomcat HUD, and I am quite a fan. Just wanted to point out if you (sesamest) do get your hands on the F-14's -1 manual, there are a couple systems that aren't currently supported in game that you'll see in the manual. Sorry bout that. -
How to read the ODS F-14A HUD information

Ok, in AA mode, you've got two vertical bars. The left one is knows as the "Vc" or Closure Rate. At the moment, this doesn't work in-game. The +1=Vc of 1000kts, 0=Vc of 0kts, and -1=Vc of -1000kts. The righthand bar is the range bar, or, range to enemy. The easiest number to use, rather than the bar, is the number listed above that bar. At the top, the navigation bar is replaced by the Radar Boresight cross. The altitude bars are still there, only at 0, +-30, +-60 and +-90 degrees, so they are a LOT more spread out. Depending on your weapon, you may see the AIM-9's seeker reticle or the gun pipper, but for all weapons, once a target is locked, you will have a small target diamond on the HUD, and also the aircraft reticle. Some of the stuff that's been left out of AA mode in-game is the Weapon indicator and number (PH/SP/SW/G and #, guns indicated in hundreds of remaining rounds, so 6=676-600, 5=599-500, etc.) at the bottom of the HUD, the steering T and the indicators on the range bar giving weapon range. This can be seen on the radar, however, and your ACM panel will tell you when you are in range with "HOT TRIG." Caged mode is the equivalent of Cruise mode, IIRC, which displays the A/C reticle, bars and some other data, but no weapons related indicators. Finally, AG mode shows your A/C reticle and Velocity Vector, the left-hand bar is your climb rate (or descent rate) in thousands of feet per minute. The right-hand bar is your Radar Altitude in thousands of feet. The bars shown are all bars from horiz. to +-90 degrees, by 5-degree intervals. You will have your heading in this mode. Hope this is a bit more helpful. -

Well, it seems like both of the new Bugs are sneaking their nicknames from former airframes: F/A-18E and F - "Rhino" - the F-4 Phantom II is the REAL Rhino. E/A-18G - "Growler" - The E/A-6B Prowler is the REAL Growler. I'm just hoping new derivatives don't show up and take "Hummer," "Hoover" and "Turkey"!!! EDIT: BTW, friggin' sweet work on the F/A-18E (for the game)! Really brings to light how much work goes into these projects, and I have to say that even as a Tomcat guy, I can't wait to try out your Super Bug when it arrives! -

Two -29's tried to jump my flight of Tomcats on the third day of the campaign. Picked 'em up as they were taking off at 10NM, they turned into us and fired. The exchange of shots yielded 2 kills for the Turkeys, 0 for the 29's...though my wingman bought it about 30 seconds later when an SA-3 took him out. In reality, the MiG-29 did not fare well at all against our Eagles. EDIT: As mentioned above, I think our only air-to-air loss was an F/A-18 lost to a MiG-25 Foxbat. We lost some F-15E's, an F-14B, and a couple F-16's and -18's to SAM and AAA fire. Not sure how many other a/c went down to surface threats, but in the air, we had the IrAF in the bag, so to speak. -
I don't think I've enjoyed a campaign this much since the days of Fleet Defender. SAM calls left and right, air threats, ground threats, enemies popping up 10NM from the flight (happened to be 2 MiG-29's on the last mission I flew, exchange of shots: Turkeys - 2, Fulcrums - 0, though my wing got it from an SA-3 about a minute afterward), and some totally awesome new planes! (Those that I've noticed in-country are the F-117, B-52H, and EF-111) Bravo Zulu on the mod, gents!

Stiglr, tell me presicely the F-14A, B and D's max performance turn, in degrees/sec and G, at 5000 feet at 55,800lbs with 4 AIM-9 and 4 AIM-7 loaded. I'm willing to bet you don't know the answer. I do, and I do because I have the same manuals that are used to create the FMs, which are official Navy tables used by their pilots. (01-F14AAA(P)-1 and -1-1, respectively). But even those don't cover the aircraft's full envelope, or abilities exploited by legendary pilots like "Snort," "Heater," "Hoser." And if you think that any of the games you play other than the TW series (LOMAC, F4) are "sims" you are wrong. They are GAMES, all of them are because none can adequately simulate the aircraft that are in them to be considered actual simulations. They can't cover everything a real simulator can, also, because a lot of modern systems are still classified either Secret or Top Secret. So to be honest, even in LOMAC and F4, you're just flying something that LOOKS like an F-15, -16, or MiG-29, but isn't really a good representation. You look for a degree of accuracy that you assume are in other GAMES that can only be had by flying the real aircraft. The fact that modding groups like TMF for ThirdWire actually use -1 manuals to get a good representation of flight characteristics is proof that you are wrong. They are the same manuals used to make FMs for other sims, because they are the official (unclass) documents. Why don't you start bitching and moaning about those games? They sure as s*it don't have fully accurate FM's, avionics, jamming, etc. -

He's bitching about realism, yet there's a few things I have yet to see modeled in other sims that are in the TW series: 1.) Departure from controlled flight THAT IS RECOVERABLE - yeah, it took a while, but I can now flat-spin and or just stall my aircraft and cause departures that, following certain guidelines, can be recovered from. Sometimes, they are irrecoverable. Seems pretty realistic to me. 2.) Gun jams - I haven't experienced this in any other combat sim, save for WWII and earlier, and yet, problems occur even in the most modern gun systems to include the M61. 3.) Cobra-able Flanker without the hit of a key - this one's self-explanatory 4.) Missiles that are not t3h uber-leet hax and which actually require an envelope to shoot in. AIM-9B/C/D/E/G/H/J/P especially, and their Eastern equivalents. 5.) Missiles that simply fail. 6.) And where the hell did he get his info on flight models? I'm certain he has flown all these a/c before...right? Probably not. 7.) Airframe over-stress causing breakage. - I'm sorry, but the Bug can't take 24G without something flying off...oh wait, in WoX, things do! This isn't even nearly the whole shabang, just some stuff I noticed that is either unique to TW, or which I don't find common in "sims" elsewhere. It behooves Stiglr to come to the realization that his idea of accurate likely isn't even accurate at all, more like fanboi accurate. S*it, I'm an arm-chair pilot, I don't really know how these a/c actually handle; I have charts, books, and real pilots to talk to to tell me that info, but I'm not about to say WoX or LOMAC or whatever is inaccurate just because you don't need to know how to turn on the engines of an F-16, or how to operate the AN/AWG-9 in a Tomcat, then apply it to every other part of the game (well, if the radar is simplified, then the handling must be arcade-like). What an idiot. -
True, I think, but there's two possibilities: 1.) When you're outta Crusaders, You are outta fighters. - The Crusader had guns and the F-4 didn't. 2.) When you're outta Tomcats, You are outta fighters. - With the retirement of the Tomcat, VF squadrons ceased to be and became VFA squadrons. Which is more correct is tough to say, but the older of the two and therefore probably more correct is the Crusader one. The person below me uses their joystick as a mouse.
