TWS and IFF
Caesar replied to blue_plasma's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Well, for one thing the ThirdWire series is a "lite" sim, so you really can't expect full, or rather unique radar functionality per aircraft. Also, it depends on what the avionics dll can and cannot support. With the avionics70 file you get a lot more supported data than from avionics60. If they come out with an avionics80 it'll likely have more features supported. Still, I'm not sure how many people want to learn how to operate all the different radar systems for all the different add-on a/c. It'd get pretty complicated, especially in a two-seater like the Tomcat to run TWS-M or TWS-A mode accurately, and especially given only one cockpit seat. In Fleet Defender, for example, you could set the plane to autopilot and go to the back seat to operate the radar; but to do this, you really had to read the manuals to understand the symbology, under which bar and degree settings the radar could operate TWS, know only one weapon type (AIM-54) could even utilize TWS, know which targets are being tracked, if you had acidentally locked a friendly and just sent a Phoenix at him along with the three bandits you just fired at...it gets very complicated. Now, doing that with only one seat, a small radar display and no DDD in the front, while flying the plane...it's possible, but it could also get to be quite a pain too, and that's for the F-14 alone. -

F/A-18F Super Hornet
Caesar replied to Marcfighter's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
ST21 all the way, Baby! (I wish.) I still find it amazing that the Navy considered the Tomcat it's strike platform of choice to the day it left the field, and it was continuously upgraded and updated through to the last cruise. Had they gone with the ST21, they would have had an a/c that would have been very close to filling the gap left by the A-6, and comparable in strike load to the Strike Eagle. But they didn't, and at the time with the Soviet Union just collapsing, the Tomcat community weary of the strike role, and some polotics that I'm not getting into they went for the "light(er)" fighter. The real axe was the ceasing of making new 'Cats back in '91. Nothing for the frames to do but get older, take longer to fix and rack up hours. The Bug was there at the right time and they went with that. No doubt over time it'll prove itself, as it is right now, and I have no doubt it'll shape up to be a great a/c in history, hell it already beat the Raptor in BFM...but that doesn't mean I have to like it. Still, I'd definately like to see this a/c in WoE. Keep up the good work, Marc. -

I have a request

If you mean the 2006 CAG bird, Flanker562 created a damn fine skin of that a/c; it's in the downloads section. I think the Tomcat that comes with the original F-14A download has the "flying pencil" scheme of VF-31 as part of it too (used by 101.) -
Joey, have you ever been in a cockpit before? No, sir, I've never been in a plane before. You ever...seen a grown man naked? <later> Joey, do you like movies about gladiators? <even later> Have you ever been to a Turkish prison? --------------- Have you ever flown a multi-engined airplane before? No. Gah, it's a God-damned waste of time! Look, you gotta talk him down, get him to crash into the lake or something, save innocent lives.

One...Two...Five! Three sir! Three! *BOOM*

Son of a b*tch got off too easily; I'd loved to have seen him go to jail and know that he would have to think about what he had done to land there for the remainder of his miserable life. But even that's extinguished now. Too damn easy.

Finnaly got the F-14D DL'd and OH BOY!
Caesar replied to F-4PhantomII's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Agree with that. But there's something so much more satasfying gunning a Flanker or Fulcrum with a Tomcat (esp. Alpha) than slamming them before they even know they're locked up... -

Caesar replied to F-4PhantomII's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Might have something to do with the year that you're flying in. If none of the MiG's have an end year beyond that of the F-14D's start year (1991 IIRC) they won't show up. Though I don't have the F-14D installed, I had this problem with a few other newer planes until I modified the start and end years in the Options.ini. Oddly enough, after the options.ini is edited to allow combat beyond the 1970's and if there are planes with later service years like the SU-27 available, older aircraft like the MiG-21 will start popping up anyways. -
What has to be done to get an F14 into WOV?
Caesar replied to F-4PhantomII's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
The Tomcat should already have tanks with it included in the download, or latest weapons pack. One is located under each engine nacelle. -
Fast reference for missile names
Caesar posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I'm not sure, but I haven't seen anything like this posted yet; it's a chart with the Warsaw pact missiles listed with their NATO call names. Basically this is this NATO Callname Warsaw AA-12 Adder R-77 just to make it a bit easier for modding .ini files for older Warsaw planes/pre-new patch and Weapon Pack planes to update their loadouts. http://forum.combatace.com/index.php?autom...si&img=2743 -

Su-27 Flanker "cobra-able"?
Caesar replied to Shin_kazama's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Right! Stop that! It's SILLY. Very SILLY indeed! Started off as a nice little idea about Flankers doing Cobra maneuvers, but now it's just got SILLY! Now, nobody likes a good laugh more than I do... except, perhaps my wife... and some of her friends. Oh, yes, and Captain Johnson. Come to think of it, most people like a good laugh more than I do, but that's beside the point! -
My favorite "golden age" game is probably also Defender. The one I played most was After Burner II.

The AA-9 and AA-4 aren't modeled in SF/WOV/WOE. The AA-12's call name is Adder last time I checked, unless it was changed. Looks like I had a spelling error (Addar vs. Adder) I'll have to change that. -
Hah, Terminators are pretty tough to beat no matter what chapter uses 'em. Invulnerable save, heavy and/or rending weaponry that can move and fire, and all power weapons in close combat. Key drawback is that they're so costly to field.

Jul 06 weapons mod tough for sam evasion.
Caesar replied to tmdgm's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Keep playing single missions with large numbers of SAMs and practice evasion. I'm no pro, but it has helped me, I'll say that much.
