A Story for the Season, (my traditional OFF/WOFF Christmas post)
BuckeyeBob replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
Thank you, Lou. It's good to remember that amidst all of the darkness, both past and present, there are always some flickers of light to guide men's souls, if you know where to look for it! -
Optional Cloud Mod 4.0 Update
BuckeyeBob replied to BuckeyeBob's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
Almost there! The final beta has been submitted for testing. Assuming no problems are found and the readme file is updated, the mod should finally be ready for release soon. -
Optional Cloud Mod 4.0 Update
BuckeyeBob replied to BuckeyeBob's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
Thank you, Janzen. You have no idea how much time I have spent just working on producing acceptable looking low-altitude fog clouds! Real-life concerns have prevented me from spending hardly any time recently on the cloud mod, but hopefully I will now have a few days before the holidays to work on finishing things up. -

Optional Cloud Mod 4.0 Update
BuckeyeBob replied to BuckeyeBob's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
Yes, it's been a lot of hard effort. Although I have been pretty backed up with work, I hope to release something very soon. Even after that, there may still be more improvements to come! -

Optional Cloud Mod 4.0 Update
BuckeyeBob replied to BuckeyeBob's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
Well, it has been two weeks since my last update and the mod still isn't quite there yet--but we are getting close! For the last two weeks, I have been working on improving some of the heavier fog and mist clouds in the mod, and I think I have finally come up with clouds that are both foggy enough but that don't have too much cloud flashing and strobing. Fog and mist can now vary from being mildly annoying to completely obscuring your view of the ground unless you dip down to below 2,000 feet, which can expose you to rifle and machine-gun fire if you aren't too careful. A larger issue is a change to some of the cloud .dds files introduced in 1.17. While the new clouds look better than the old clouds, there appears to be a greater contrast between the light clouds and the dark clouds, causing some increase in cloud flashing, at least in the cloud mod. While I have begun to address this, I will wait to more comprehensively deal with the issue after I have released version 4.0 of the mod. -
Optional Cloud Mod 4.0 Update

Nice pics, Becker! I have removed a few bright white clouds from the "Heavy" weather folder, which should reduce the chances of seeing these bright clouds against a dark background. -
Optional Cloud Mod 4.0 Update
BuckeyeBob replied to BuckeyeBob's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
Update: I am still working on a few issues such as the one just mentioned by Becker. Once I work those out, I will be ready to release the new version. Only a few days now...at most TWO WEEKS! -

Dear Becker, Have you flown any missions since the mission shown here? If not, please send me a copy of your OFFDynamicWeatherMission.xml file in your OBD WWI/weather folder. -
Indeed, zombiewoof. Thank you to everyone who has ever worn a uniform and sworn an oath. "Ours's is not to reason why, ours's is but to do or die."

Optional Cloud Mod 4.0 Update
BuckeyeBob replied to BuckeyeBob's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
I am now very close to releasing the mod for beta testing, so it shouldn't be too much longer before public release. While the new version will have a few more brand new cloud types such as Grey Altocumulus Clouds pictured above and updates to existing cloud types, the bulk of the update consists of revisions to most of the existing WOFF's cloud files, plus the addition of more than 30 additional cloud files, designed specifically to reduce cloud flashing and popping as much as possible. This is the first time that I have approached the cloud flashing problem by focusing mainly on the cloud files instead of cloud types (cloud files are much like building blocks that are used to construct the different cloud types seen in the game). With any luck, the mod will be ready for public release in--you guessed it--two weeks! -
Any thoughts on improving the tactical AI? While I think the strategic AI may be the best of any flight-sim out there, I feel the tactical, or combat maneuvers AI, still needs a little work. Currently, the maneuvers chosen by the AI while in the middle of a dogfight appear to be almost totally random. There also appears to be little variation in maneuvers between turn-fighters and boom-and-zoom fighters. I imagine that this may be exceedingly difficult to code, but a boy can dream, can't he? Also, any possibility of adding more aircraft shake when entering a stall?

Optional Cloud Mod 4.0 Update
BuckeyeBob replied to BuckeyeBob's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
I think I have finally fixed or created all of the cloud files I will need for OCM 4.0, so I am now going through all the different cloud types in WOFF and my mod that use different combinations of these cloud files. I am about half-way through these cloud types, but keep in mind there are now over 100 different cloud types in OCM 4.0, so it will still take awhile. Hopefully, I will be finished before the Armistice! -
Optional Cloud Mod 4.0 Update
BuckeyeBob replied to BuckeyeBob's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
A brief update: I am (slowly) working my way through all the weather files and replacing many of the old cloud files with my new and improved cloud files. Usually, this is straight-forward, but occasionally, I run into problems. For example, in the process of replacing many of the old haze cloud files with the newer ones, I discovered that while the new files significantly reduced cloud flashing while flying in an easterly or westerly direction, this was not the case when flying in a northerly or southerly direction! (WOFF QC defaults to flying from east to west). Arrgghhh! Fortunately, I think I have managed to fix the situation, although there may still be some residual cloud flashing in some circumstances. On the bright side, I have managed to add one or two more weather types! See BB Grey Altocumulus Clouds below: I still hope to release the update sometime this month. Sorry for the delay, but this is a big project! -
Mods Recommendations?
BuckeyeBob replied to WWI Flying Ace's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
With the exception of a few minor inconsistencies, my cloud mod works fine with BHaH2. In order to get full use of all mod features, however, don't forget to also use JJJ's excellent Mission Editor. I hope to have release version 4.0 of the mod ready sometime in the near future. -

On my computer, I press Ctrl+Shift+1-5 to bring up and cycle through the gauges. You can display up to five at a time. -

For each guage, you can cycle through until you get the one you want. I don't recall the key combination off the top of my head, as I am not currently at my computer, but it should be easy to find. -
Optional Cloud Mod 4.0 Update
BuckeyeBob replied to BuckeyeBob's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
I think this is generally correct, at least for some kinds of cloud flashing. I have noticed that flashing does seem to be more frequent with some of the larger cloud textures. Reducing the size of clouds via the cloudfile (not the .dds file) sometimes helps to reduce cloud flashing. Unfortunately, there are other sources of cloud flashing as well! Thanks. I am trying! I think those are caused by particular .dds files that are used in certain cloudfiles. I will have to track them down and see if they can be eliminated without spoiling other cloud types that use the same cloudfile. I may have to wait until "phase two" of my update to attempt to fix this, however. -
Optional Cloud Mod 4.0 Update
BuckeyeBob replied to BuckeyeBob's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
Thank you, VonS. I also like 40L0M's improved clouds, although I haven't loaded them for testing of the new mod yet. We need someone with his talents to work on the cloud .dds files to see if he can do anything about the cloud flashing problem. Unfortunately, I am a complete hack when it comes to all that artsy-fartsy stuff! With regard to the rain with clear skies, I am aware of the problem. OBD changed something in BHaH2 that sometimes causes this, but I haven't quite figured out what it is yet. Thanks for the information about the difference between 2.9.2 and 3.0, perhaps that will help me to figure out the problem. -
Optional Cloud Mod 4.0 Update
BuckeyeBob replied to BuckeyeBob's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
Thank you very much for the kind words, Becker04. It makes me very happy to hear that you and others still enjoy my previous work. It's funny that you mention the "blue hole" problem. With BHaH2, OBD has done something that makes it harder to get rid of the blue hole, but I am working on a solution, possibly involving the haze clouds pictured above. -
Optional Cloud Mod 4.0 Update
BuckeyeBob replied to BuckeyeBob's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
Thanks, Trooper17. I don't know about resolved, but I hope to eliminate as much of the cloud flashing as possible. Sometimes, though, reducing cloud flashing seems to result in worse-looking clouds. -

Thank you, Adger! Chaps like you give me the will to go on (modding)! With the worst of the cloud flashing in BHaH2 gone, I am now working on an update to the Optional Cloud Mod. After that, maybe a damage mod, with particular attention to wings and engines. -
What? A Rick Rawlings Challenge?
BuckeyeBob replied to Rick Rawlings's topic in WOFF BH&H2 - General Discussion
Great job, lads! The stories, pics, and videos were outstanding! Congratulations to Baldric and HarryH! Sorry I was unable to participate. Between work and working on my cloud mod, I barely have had any time to breathe, let alone fly. Thanks for putting this together again, Rick.
