For some reason - in my post exam haze - I thought those posts were recent. Then I checked the year... 2012. *sigh* and another year goes by... Fingers crossed boys - I think the community has reached a point where it needs WOFF to release soon. Been far too quiet around here! -
Glad I'm not the only one. My TrackIR is mostly held together with crazy glue!

As I said in one of my other posts, I have finally gotten back to OFF after a few months away. I've kept my "good" pilots - those with a history, some kills to their credit, and some chance of success - in suspended animation; both for their sake and mine. I've brought out two new pilots, one flying Sopwith Camels in summer 1917 and another pilot flying the Fokker Dr1 in late 1917. I can't quite remember what Jasta he was with - their pattern is all blue with a blue cowling cover on the engine. At any rate, his career didn't last long. I don't even remember his name at this point! Our poor pilot lasted exactly two missions: a successful patrol over the lines which saw him get lost in a thunderstorm and finally cut for home. The second patrol was far less successful and ended with a quick and sudden death - yet another reminder of just how dangerous the skies of OFF are. Our patrol was once again in bad weather - heavy, thick cloud cover hung fairly low over the lines as we climbed up to start our patrol on the day after Christmas. We made it out towards the edge of the lines - this was a friendly aerodrome defense mission - and as we approached, I saw my lead flight of three Dr1's flying at about 2000 ft above me, begin breaking right. I wasn't sure why until I looked off of my right center wing spar and saw a field of black flak blanketing the skies. Leaning forward I could make out a few specks against the sky and knew we had company. I kept a close eye as our lead flight and the enemy flight of unidentified specks began to merge. I could make out the tracer rounds flying back and forth. And that's when it happened. I was so fixated on the merge and which target I could pick out of the furball that I hadn't checked my six in a few minutes. My wingmen were all a few hundred feet below me - the Dr1 has a nasty habit of climbing to the moon unless it's kept in check - which it wasn't during my period of being entranced by the start of a dogfight (a real rookie mistake given I've been playing flight sims for fifteen years now). And then... the hail of gunfire that you always dread as a pilot came blasting through my cockpit from somewhere behind me. I had drifted high and away from my flight - leaving me incredibly exposed and utterly unaware that a second flight had crept in behind us and caught us completely unaware. Wing spars, support wires, part of my controls, and my engine were all hit in the first past. Out of reflex I kicked the rudder right, shoved the stick down, and attempted to dive away as quickly as possible. In an Albatros or a DVII, this might have worked - but the Fokker just stalled, hung on its oversized wing, and went nowhere. Thankfully, the stall allowed my assailant, a DH5, to overshoot me. It didn't matter though, the damage was done. I circled again, lined up another DH5 in my sights, and peppered him with gunfire until he had stream of fuel spraying out of his overhead fuel tank. And then came the inevitable - the final blast of gunfire which finished off my Dr1 - left it uncontrollable and spiraling towards earth. And just like that, my pilot was dead. But that's life in the skies of OFF - quick, violent, and always dangerous.

The Quick and the Dead

I know what you mean! I'm due for a reformat once this semester wraps up and I have some spare time. The rig has been showing signs of doing some flakey things lately and I've mucked about with it enough installing and trying out a lot of new games - Red Orchestra 2 being one of them! Desperately needs to be cleaned out. -

Hey Widow! Nice to see your name again! How are you these days? What happened with the OFF install? -
Thanks Lothar! Will give it a go and report back!

I finally cracked last night. I had had enough, enough of reading and note taking, enough of staring into my word processor for hours at a time. I needed a break. So I walked over, fired up the gaming computer, and started OFF. For the sake of my old pilots - who sit in suspended animation until this summer - I created a new pilot: Cecil Graves, and put him into a plane that, surprisingly (given my name) I haven't flown in OFF: The Sopwith Camel. Cecil's first patrol took him up over the lines on a patrol in beautiful clear weather. The patrol was eventful too! In addition to dodging flak and not getting lost (his patrol sector was in a location I wasn't terribly familiar with) we wound up coming across a low-flying formation of DFW's painted in lavender and green. I rolled my Camel over and descended - opening fire on the first DFW as I screamed past at a high rate of speed. After flying in the 1916 early 1917 era for so long, this new Camel felt like a jet fighter by comparison! I circled back around - the clattering of machine gun fire was deafening as all sides poured on the fire - also a big change from the intermittent rat-tat-tat's I'm used to hearing. As I came back around from my turn, I opened fire again - the force of the twin Vickers guns was tremendous and with my trusty Track-IR equipped, I leaned forward and looked through my gun sight to guide the rounds in. It was incredibly fast. It was incredibly violent. And, in the end, a DFW was left on fire, plummeting to the earth. It was a tremendous first patrol back. Cecil performed well - never losing control of the tricky widow-maker of the Sopwith Camel. We turned, headed for home, and descended across our side of the lines. And as I sat back, hearing the wind whipping through my cockpit, watching the sunlight dancing across the shell-torn landscape below, and looked off my wingtip to see my fellow Camel pilots, my mind finally stopped. It was glorious. And yet again, I owed a debt, not only to the devs - guys like Pol and Winder and Shred and Sandbagger - but also to you guys: The power supply in my rig was donated, as well as the TrackIR system that I can no longer fly without. Cheers!

Andy, seriously, there is no need to do this - I'm probably one of maybe two people having this problem and, additionally, I am up to my eyeballs in work preparing for comps at the end of this semester so there is absolutely no need to torture yourself fixing this! It's an awesome mod! I'm also due to reformat my computer and reinstall - I've had a lot of clutter build up over the last year of school and who knows, there could be a registry issue somewhere in Windows that's mucking things up. All that said, you've made an incredible mod! I wish the devs could just contact you and have you engineer the sounds in WOFF, it would be fantastic!
-
Well, it looks like the new version is much better - but crikey did I have a strange problem at the end of a mission last night. So I was flying with the 103rd in March of 1918 - figured that would be a good test of whether my system was up to the task of all of the mods. I should mention at this point that I have downloaded Lothar's OFFice with the included mods and installed Andy's latest sound patch. The mission was brilliant - OFF ran smoother than I'd ever seen it, consistently in the 60fps. I then warped - I wonder if there's something with the mods that makes this unadvisable - and when I came out of it the planes we were escorting were gone and my plane was looping towards the ground. I pulled out and found that me and a wingman had engaged a flight of Rumplers. Well, I shot one down and damaged a second but took a few hits to my SPAD 7. After the fight it was clear that my engine had taken damage - the revs kept dropping so I headed for the lines. As I made it to the Front, the revs finally cut and I lost altitude. That's when things got weird... I cut to a flyby view just to take in the graphics and see how the plane looked. As soon as I did, I went from 60fps to fractions of single digits. The game more than stuttered - it froze several times. Then I saw white artifacts on the ground at the trenches and the FPS continued to be in the single digits - there was a LOT of sound playing at the time: groundfire, artillery, flak, the whistling of wind through my cockpit... I'm not sure what caused the massive drop in my FPS. But when I removed all of the mods and played the mission again in its stock form - there were no issues. Any ideas? I'm really sorry to drop such a puzzler on everyone - the mods, when they work, are simply stunning. Great stuff!

Just checking in at the old watering hole
CaptSopwith replied to RAF_Louvert's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Hi Gents! Thought I'd check in quickly. I hope everyone is doing well - been awfully quiet around here lately. As for myself, I'm finishing my course work in my PhD program as well as teaching and preparing to take my general exams. So, hopefully, that explains my absence around here. Olham, how are you these days? Good to see some of the old members posting around here - Lou especially! -
Hi guys! Been far too long since I've posted an update but after reading gaw's report, I thought I could chime in. I, too, have an older system - from about 2008. And I've actually had to stop using Lothars Office with updates because I was having the same frame rate issues after Andy's awesome sound mod. The sounds are incredible but I am also having intermittent but definitely noticeable frame rate problems - particularly when I was close to the front. I think the increase in the number of sounds occurring at any given time seemed to be the cause of the problem - particularly when it involved flak or artillery sounds. My system runs an Intel Quad Core processor, 4GB of RAM, a GeForce 9800GT. My sound is, like gaw's, also on the system board, which I think is probably contributing to my issues. Any ideas on where to proceed from here chaps?

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Since re-installing my gaming rig last May I've accumulated about 145 games on it. Including a massive DOS collection and just about every PC game I've ever owned since the late 1990s. I have six versions of Red Baron 3D installed including every flight sim from F117A Stealth Fighter (my very first sim) all the way up to my current generation stuff. I've never owned so many games and I've never been at such a loss for what to play when I sit down. So if nothing else, you're in good company. PS: Thanks again for that PSU - it's still running strong in my PC!

Greetings All! Just wanted to wish everyone here a restful, relaxing, and memorable time with friends and family as we enjoy the holidays. I'll be heading home myself to see my parents and some friends that I've missed dearly over the last year. It'll be wonderful to see them again! I'll be away until the beginning of January, but I hope everyone here has a very Merry Christmas and an enjoyable start to the New Year! Cheers and I'll see you back in the skies shortly!

CaptSopwith replied to Olham's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Well I'm still here. Although I have to admit it seems curiously quiet around here. I think the wait for WOFF is, perhaps, getting a bit long in the tooth for people. That said, with OFFBase and some new found free time this break, I'm learning that there are still hundreds of playing hours still left in OFF. -
So, with that... a very battered, very tired, and very weary CaptSopwith is back and reporting for duty. It's good to be back. How is everyone here? Please, some happier stories are certainly in order...
-
Indeed! I for one, can't wait to hear your new soundtrack Matt. From what I've heard in the previews, it sounds amazing. Hope you're doing well!
-
Ah yes, it has been a while hasn't it? I remember when we used to call it P4... gads, was that really back in 2010??
-
Crikey! Sounds like you had a time of it British! Also, I completely forgot I ever posted this! The remainder of the semester was a blur of sleep deprivation and paper writing and grading... I've spent the last three days sleeping it all off and getting over being sick for the last month. But things are definitely looking on the up! I finished the term, battered and in need of improvement, but with a clear head and I walked off the field under my own power, so that's a win. And, as they say, it really does happen when you're not looking. Turns out someone new has liked me all semester. And it turns out we have everything in common. We both love good jazz, good books, stargazing, and yes, even flight sims! She's asked me to show her around OFF a few times... good fun! My life bears no resemblance to what I wrote about back in November - thank God! And thank you guys. Your comments, messages of support, and hell, just getting to read what everyone was up to was a big stress reliever - one that I am continually thankful for when I encounter some rough spots in life. This wasn't the first time, I'm sure it won't be the last, but as always, you were all greatly apprecaited! Here's to a far improved 2013 - providing the Mayans aren't right in a few days! ;)

OFFbase: The Barmy Automated Squadron Experience for Over Flanders Fields
CaptSopwith commented on Lothar of the Hill People's file in OFFice / OFFbase / OFFworld
For those of you who are curious about OFFice and the way it can add some more life to an already great flight sim, I wrote what became a two-part piece on my impressions back in June, and Lothar's work has progressed quite a bit since there. Here's what I had to say six months ago, hope you enjoy!: Fellow OFF'ers. It gives me great pleasure to give you some of my initial experiences flying the newly combined mods of OFFice, HPW's flight and empty weight mods, and OlPaint01's Damage modifications - as well as a whole slew of other mods that he included in his Ultimate Bundle. So, simply stated first: So far, very good! OFFice appears to do a fine job of managing the various mods and the potential conflicts that they create. After dropping all of my desired mods into the appropriate JSGME folder, OFFice took care of the rest. To fully test this set of mods, and to start some full DiD campaigns, I created two pilots. My namesake is flying for 24 RFC in February of 1916 and my German namesake is starting in Jasta 4 at its earliest start date. OFFice introduces some nice RPG style enhancements to OFF and integrates well with the OFF Manager. Start OFFice first, run through your pilot and his interactions with his other squad mates - all pulled from OFF's data to seamlessly integrate it with the in-game campaign, and then you can head to the airfield and start your mission. OFFice previously served as a nice RPG handler - it now serves in more of a capacity that those of us who played Red Baron 3D will remember - Campaign Manager 1.1. OFFice loads all of the appropriate mods based on the year your pilot serves, the level of activity at his part of the front, and the relative quality of his squad mates. From there, you fly as always. As for the flight and damage modeling. I have to say, my DH2 feels nicer than any other version I've ever flown. The controls feel nice - the plane still exhibits its usual spin and stall quirks, but the lead weight feeling of the plane from its stock OFF configuration is now a thing of the past. This plane feels light - which, given that it's made out of canvas and wood, seems like it would be accurate. The plane also turns well, climbs with less of a struggle, and fights pretty well - based on the QC's I've staged with it and other period aircraft. The damage model is interesting. I loaded the HPW Ultimate Damage model option (OFFice, btw, gives you a choice here during setup which is quite handy). It's too early to tell, but in my QC's with some Halberstadt DII's I noticed some odd behavior. The Halberstadt's only seemed to go down once you set them on fire - which I did to every one of them - 5 in total. Various hits here and there damaged control surfaces, but only fire finally took them out. Also, the hovering flamer bug from older OFF incarnations seems to be present - at least with my combination of mods as installed by OFFice. Each Halberstadt more or less flew in circles at near level altitude while on fire. The pilots never left their planes and the aircraft never crashed. As a comparison, I'll have to try the alternate damage model next and see how it compares. Over all, between HPW's massive work on the FM, along with the damage model, sound files, realism files, and the litany of other small tweaks - my DiD campaigns should be fantastic to experience! I highly recommend this package to anyone looking to stretch some more life or add some more variety to OFF before the inevitable release of its successor. This is good stuff. I'll offer more reports as time allows. ---------- Okay, it's after midnight, I haven't gotten any work done, and I'm still fighting the urge to go up for another mission... Further thoughts on this collection of mods for OFF. Wow! Is all I really have to say. Having swapped out the damage model from the HPW to Buddy's version, the improvements were noticeable from the outset. At least with my configuration - everyone's machine handles things a little differently - the difficulty and immersion of OFF has skyrocketed. I have created 10 new pilots - all with back stories, desires, and aspirations for their time at the front. Some seek to serve King and Country. Others are there because life in the cavalry grew tedious and dull in a war that no longer needed them. Still more joined because they sought glory - and found chaos and death instead. With OFFice, I suddenly remember my squad mates names. I feel I know them a bit better - having interacted with them. I only wish we could create some sort of visual representation of them - even if it was on the level of Wings of Glory, it would still be fantastic. As it stands - the simple interactions, the ability to move time in the campaign (IE: I get to fly real dawn patrols now, which are my absolute favorite). The improvement in the variety of weather - I know that the war was typically a mud and rain filled quagmire - but it's nice to fly in some clear weather for a change! The additions of the new sound files - I've used Creaghorn's sound mods for a while but these introduce some new ones I've not heard before. The engines really sound alive now! Even the light powered rotaries have a full, metallic, heavy sound to them - it's fantastic. It all comes together so beautifully. OFF was already the most immersive WWI flight sim I had ever played. This is just dumping icing on an already delicious cake. Did I mention that I like the new loading screen sounds as well? I like that there's a clear difference between the Allied and German side now - feels better. Oh, and during the German briefings - am I right in guessing that the briefing voice over work is taken from the German version of Red Baron II's German Intelligence Briefings? Sounds just like them - I really like it! So overall - would I recommend this set of addons to the community? I give it a resounding YES! This pack really breathes some new life into a sim that I feel like I'm still learning. They are small improvements - but the cumulative effect is massive. From the new sense of immersion in interacting with my squadmates through a simple, old-school, but effective text-based RPG element to the immersion of flying with new sounds and dealing with a whole new FM and DM to learn... it all comes together to make for an utterly gripping experience. I thought I was addicted before... but nothing like this! Fantastic work guys! I cannot commend you enough. I love it! PS: The mods are so good - esp with OFFice, that I have started my first round of 2-seater campaigns. First up was Fritz Morgens - who served as the observer of the Roland CII below. I got Fritz settled into the new barracks and he introduced himself to his new squadron members and had a meeting with the Adjutant. The first mission was a lone patrol - a chance to take Fritz up over the lines and let him get a look at the Front. The weather, as you can see, was terrible. I realized that I have never actually flown any of the 2-seaters in OFF since buying the sim in 2009! Well, it was a long overdue treat. We got up in the air and from that point on I let the AI do the flying while I panned the skies for trouble. I do wish that my TrackIR system would work from the observer's seat - is there a trick to make it work?At any rate - we went up and down the lines and finally up to the coast - all on our side of the front. As we turned for home, I got a strange feeling in my gut. Coming through a thick wall of cloud cover were three Nieuports and they had us caught low and slow, heading for home. The result was as terrifying as it was sickening to experience. The Nieuports - painted in French markings - smelled blood and came right for us. I've never seen fighters attack me while sitting in the back of a plane - and I don't want to see it again anytime soon! All three opened fire and, try as I might with my rear gun, I could do little to fend them off. The first burst from the three French planes was also exceedingly lucky - putting our engine on half of its cylinders right away. We were belching smoke as my pilot tired to get me steady for a clear shot. Then - I felt it - another barrage of bullets hit us and wounded the pilot. Our plane lurched, side slipped, and headed for the trees. The impact turned my stomach. Fritz is dead - on his first mission, and a training sortie at that. But, never fear, a new man, Kristof Maybach - a family man from Prussia, has just arrived as a replacement. Life in the squadron now goes on. Fritz's name is still on the board - listed as deceased. The rest of the squad barely remembers him - they had so little time to even learn his name. As Maybach learns his new surroundings - the fellow pilots that Fritz knew (ever so briefly) remain - the same personalities and traits, the same quirks, the same temperaments. These fellow pilots no longer vanish into the ether of history. Life goes on and the sense of institutional memory is now a part of OFF. What will become of these men, as well as my own, remains to be seen. This is really great stuff! If you haven't had a chance to try this out - it's a snap to install, and once you start messing with it, you quickly see how addictive this form of OFFing suddenly becomes. Oh - and if you really want the hardcore heroin version of this - fly DiD. I'm finally giving it a real go (now that I have TrackIR) and I have to say - it's terrifying. Without time compression and without warp and without a tactical aid screen - I really feel uneasy and vulnerable from the time I get to my cruising altitude until I cut the engine and land safely at home. There are simply no safegards and the feeling of emminant danger is tangible through the monitor. Hats off to Siggi for those rules. If you see this post Sig, thanks again! Whew! I'm typed out. As you can see - I'm in love with this sim all over again. What a great sim and what a fantastic community! Cheers all around!- 10 comments

OFF Sound Tweak III - Update 3.1
CaptSopwith replied to Andy73's topic in WOFF UE/PE - General Discussion
Andy: I just wanted to say thank you for working on this amazing mod and for posting it for the rest of us to enjoy! I just flew my first few missions with your mod installed and the change it makes to OFF is remarkable! The sound of artillery and flak are truly scary to fly through and the ambiance created by your sounds is just fantastic. I sincerely hope the devs get in contact with you about incorporating your work into WOFF - it would be a shame if they didn't. Well done and thanks again! -
OFFbase Update: An Ode to the OFF Community

Cheers all around! -
Who is the oldest (and youngest) OFF'er

I remember during my Red Baron days I was always "the kid" - I was 16 when I first appeared on the boards. I'm 30 - at least for another two months so I can still click that beautiful 20-30 box and not the horrid 30-40 box! ;) -
OFFbase Update: An Ode to the OFF Community

Minor bug to report with the new version. When I head to the adjutant's office to change the reported front activity, I get an endless cycle of dialogs with the adjuntant when I click "Report Sector Activity." If this will help, I am a Hautmann in Jasta 17. The operational date is October 14, 1917. Otherwise, pretty smooth sailing!
