  1. OT-f-35 Sea Trails

Quite spectacular! Does this mean the CV no longer has to turn into the wind for a F-35 landing? The aircraft itself can pivot over the carrier until it is facing into the wind.
  2. Came across this short film showing the French aces Rene Dorme, Albert Duellin and Georges Guynemer. It's from the British Pathe collection. Illustrates just how tight a fit the cockpit was, especially the SPAD. http://www.britishpathe.com/video/airmen-dorme-deullin-and-guynemer
  3. OT My Favourite War Film

So many good films mentioned. Personally any war film that comes on I watch, enjoy them all. But my favourites? Have to be....... Dawn Patrol Battle Of Britain Dambusters
  4. A great source of information concerning aircraft types, profiles and period drawings. Lost several years ago, but now recovered via the Wayback Machine. Skinners go wild! http://web.archive.org/web/20110716081035/http://mars.ark.com/~mdf/nieuport.html (Picked it up via The Aerodrome)
  5. Reading the above account simply horrifies me. 5,000+ hours and the crew couldn't even read an altimeter to see that they were falling out of the sky? Forget AOA, thrust or airspeed. Look at the Bloody Altimeter!!! Push the damn stick forward! It's so basic, as everyone has mentioned. Words fail me. Bullethead, was there anything in the article to give hope that Air France, or any air govening body, was taking steps to improve flight crew training to avoid such mistakes in the future?
  6. Sometime soon P4 of Over Flanders Field will be released, perhaps even this year? I, like everyone here, want to see the product sales do really really well, so that you guys make money (hopefully retain your interest) and continue to develop the product. Selfish I know! The question is just how well known is OFF in the market place? And how much interest is there in it? Looking at Forum stats on various sites I hate to admit it, but OFF rates quite low on the totum pole. And as far as media exposure goes 'Rise Of Flight' always seems to be in the news. One of the best selling aircraft simulation magazines around is "PC Pilot". And as will be shown below Rise Of Flight is constantly being promoted. Not just in the occassional Ad, but by clever use PR to gain free coverage in magazine feature articles. For example the following PC Pilot magazine issues contained articles on ROF: * Issue 76 (Nov/Dec 2011): Free RoF DVD on the CD that is on the cover of each issue of PC Pilot. Plus a 2 page article (by the magazine itself) on the latest developments in RoF. * Issue 75 (Sept/Oct '11): Four (4) page article on RoF sim developments. * Issue 72 (Mar/Apr '11): Four (4) page article on latest RoF v1.016 * Issue 71 (Jan'Feb '11): Four (4) page article on upcoming RoF game developments, in the format of Q & A with 777 Studios. * Issue 70 (Nov/Dec '10): Two (2) page article on 'Flying the Albatross D.Va' in RoF. * Issue 69 (Sept/Oct '10): Two (2) page article on 'Flyine the Fokker D.VII'. * Issue 68 (July/Aug '10): Two (2) page article on 'Flying the Se5a". * Issue 67 (May/June '10): Two (2) page article on 'Flying the Fokker Dr.1'. * Issue 66 (Mar/Apr '10): Two (2) page article on 'Flying the Sopwith Camel'. * Issue 65 (Jan/Feb '10): Two (2) page article on 'RoF - Anatomy of a Flight Sim'. * Issue 64 (Nov/Dec '09): Five (5) page Main Feature article on 'RoF-The Return of WWI Combat Simulation'. * Issue 63 (sept/Oct '09): Half page article on the release of RoF, PLUS a Massive Movie on the CD as well. In addition to the almost year and a half of solid RoF promotion by PC Pilot, there have been numerous short movies included on the magazines cover CD; as well as many mentions of whatever is the latest product release by 777 Studios in the magazines 'News' section. And to top it off invariably each Issue contains feedback in the "Letters' Section on RoF. All great promotion, as well as showing continued interest in WWI simulations. Note: Most feature articles are written by one Derek Davis. So my idea is this. How about the OFF crew take a leaf out of 777 Studios and offer 'OFF Between Heaven and Hell' as a free CD give away to PC Pilot? To be placed on the cover CD? The opportunity could also be taken then to follow it up with giving Derek Davis (of PC Pilot) the add-on "Hat in The Ring". And then feed him information -articles and movies- of what's coming in P4. I think it's a low cost way to promote OFF (other than the cost of the CD's) and an excellent way to hit our target market. The goal is lots of articles over several months in the magazine. I know that that can never be guaranteed, but if the product is supplied to them, there has to be a good chance of gaining exposure. Maybe even include Derek (if good vibes are there) as a Beta tester!? Interest in WWI simulation is definitely out there. Otherwise PC Pilot would not have committed valuable magazine space to this topic unless it would help them sell magazines. It's interesting to note that no other sim (other than Microsoft Flight Simulator) has received the same level of exposure in the magazine!
  7. Yes, as already mentioned "Those Maginificent Men" is streets ahead of anything else. A real classic.
  8. OT Dogs in the Snow

And another view..... all keenly awaiting the throw of the ball!
  9. OT Dogs in the Snow

Ok, we're cooking now. Thanks Widowmaker Here is a photo of my four. In the front (left to right) are Bella (Border Collie), Buddy (Border Collie) and Ben (mix of German Shephard, Bull Mastif and other breeds). Lurking in the back is Duchess, a Bull Arab. Duchess is only 6 months old, and already weighs in at 38kg.
  10. OT Dogs in the Snow

    My attachment folder in empty.
  11. OT Dogs in the Snow

Hmm, that didn't work to well! To upload don't you just select a file (using the browse button) and then click on attach?
  12. OT Dogs in the Snow

Fantastic photo's Flyby, you have beautiful looking dogs there. Luv that snow shot. 50kg! Man I bet you know it when he jumps on you. Here is a photo of my four. 13. Something that has been on my mind for ages, just keep forgetting to ask. Is there any chance of having a complete 'aircraft' viewer? As a seperate selection (and in colour) instead of having to go through Quick Combat format? Which also means you have to select a pilot to see aircraft choice.
  14. OT The First Snow of Winter

Ahh the Land of OZ! Brilliant sunshine, with temp in the high 20's (C°). Come the weekend it's off to the beach to laze on golden sand.
  15. For a really good breakdown of how the French trained their pilots (and which the fledgling USAS adopted) check out Flyright's post here: http://simhq.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/topics/2517302/WWI_Basic_Combat_Maneuver_draw.html Excellent detail.
  16. Anyone been able to log onto the 'Drome' this past week?
  17. I've been promising myself that I'll attend the 2012 air show. And I mean to do it. After all it's only a short hop across the Tasman Sea.
  18. Good grief! I don't think I've ever seen a more ugly aeroplane.
  19. Does P4 get it's own name?

    OFF: Fragile Wings, Cruel Sky
  20. Very clever idea Lima, excellent. Well done. War diaries are full of pilot's comments (on both sides) using flak to firstly, identify that enemy aeroplanes are in the vicinity and, secondly, to set up and approach and attack. Your idea lets one actually stalk an enemy. Lets hope that the guys incorporate it into P4!
  21. Head bob please

Head bob? Yuk! It's never done well, not even in first-person shooter games. And in flight sims? Awful. Think about it. If your running does your view bounce around like crazy? No. Why? Because irrespective of your body movement your eyes constantly remain focused on whatever your looking at. There like a gimble. Computers cannot model that well.
  22. Great Buy for your Library?

Good grief! Try $25 Australian. Here. http://biblio.co.uk/details.php?dcx=304468043&aid=aa&t=1 And it's hard cover, first edition (for those who like that sort of thing).
  23. Excellent graph Olham! Nicely done. Interesting to look at the percentages of claims v's losses. In the same order (top to bottom, left to right) they are: 11%, 13%, 13%, 12%, 11%, 9%, 16%, 16%, 9%, 10%, 16%, 25%, 17%, 15% and 19%. Jasta's 26 and 15 did extremely well with a loss rate of just 9%. Whereas Jast 7 suffered quite high losses for it's claims (25%). Also interesting to note the very low rate of KIFA for all Jasta's. Speaks highly of the level of pilot training, and arguably the quality of aircraft they flew. I would hazard that the KIFA in the equilavent British units would be much higher.
