MiG-15 undermodelled ?
Heck replied to Sokol's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
If you check the data.ini for the B-29, you'll see this in the Flight Control section: [FlightControl] StallSpeed=45.13 100.9mph CruiseSpeed=135.92 303.8 mph ClimbSpeed=208.85 466.8 mph CornerSpeed=75.54 168.9 mph MaxG=3.00 MaxSpeedSL=257.05 574.6 mph MachLimit=0.80 PitchDamper=1.0 RollDamper=0.5 YawDamper=0.05 I believe, if I remember correctly, that these figures are supposed to be in meters per second, which means the B-29 is capable of over 570 mph. I think that might be a tad high..... And I don't think it could maintain a climb at 466 mph. Might want to fiddle with these, if I am correct about their being in meters per second. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. That is one hot ship for a bomber... Heck -
Sabre Drivers - The Hunters
Heck replied to a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
What a package! Back to Korea! I was so inspired by this thread, I went out to my local video store and found a copy of "The Hunters." Great aerial footage. Really looking forward to this. Heck -
Sabre Drivers - The Hunters
Heck replied to a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Thanks, to Tazkiller, and all who've worked on them. Love these two airplanes. Especially the Sabre. And thanks for the links to "The Hunters." One of my favorite movies, since I was a kid, and one of my favorite books of all time. Although, I wish Hollywood had taken James Salter's (aka James Horowitz, 4th FIW) advice and followed his book more exactly, I think the movie would have been even better. Apparently, from stories I've read, Salter was so upset with the Hollywoodization of his book that he refused to ever sell any of his material to Hollywood again, although the stories I've read could be wrong. Can't wait for the release of these. Heck -
Carrier landings
Heck replied to Brainless's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mission/Campaign Building Discussion
Love deck landing. Especially the Passionate Pachyderm, the RA5C. I never let the computer land it, no matter what condition I'm coming back in from "up north." Don't fly the A-6 much, usually the Phantom or Crusader, my two favorites, or the A-4 Scooter. Waiting for the new release of the Mirage Factory's new A-7, which looks to be just as good as their Gunfighter. Real men don't use asphalt. Heck -
A-1H Skyraider
Heck replied to Canadair's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Sorry, my bad. I had a previous version that would work with the WW2 stuff. It seems the new version has some sort of divide by zero problem. I'll see if I can find the file version that I used to have. Heck -

What aircraft you miss in game?
Heck replied to vrkuboy's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Yes, especially the RF-101. -
A-1H Skyraider
Heck replied to Canadair's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Yes, Canadair. It is meters per second. If I remember the Strike Fighters Editing Notes correctly, only the pitch, roll, and yaw dampers from the [Flight Control] section affect the player aircraft. The rest affects only the AI. If it feels draggy compared to other planes, I would use P10ppy's excellent FM Tool to compare it's CDL drag to other aircraft in the sim you're flying it in. It seems most likely to be the culprit, although the Skyraider was festooned with a lot more pylons than any other aircraft flying, and each of those contributes a little profile drag. I'd definately used the tool to compare, just to see if anything pops out when you do. Hope this helps a little. Heck -
Green Hell for Wings over Vietnam
Heck replied to Stary's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I had the problem of white water at sea and on land in medium settings, also. I cured it by adding a texture notation to the VIETNAMSEADATA.INI: TextureStage[01].TextureName=VIETNAMS2.TGA And I changed the second reference from: TextureStage[02].TextureName=ref_color.bmp to: TextureStage[02].TextureName=VIETNAMS1.TGA -
WOV A-6 Intruder Problem

Extract your A6A Cockpit.ini. Change your MaxYaw and MinYaw values to: MaxYaw=152 MinYaw=-152 Heck -
I agree. Thank you, christian59. Works perfectly now. Heck

Thanks for the help, Capun. This opens some interesting possibilities for some batteries just behind the lines, using Geo's superb French 75 and German 77. Something to play around with. I'll do some experimenting. That, and placing some of his Vickers and Maxim machine guns along the front to give us some lines of tracers going back and forth, which might give us a more active battlefield without overstraining people with low end machines (me). Oh, and I found my file where I changed the stats log to a higher number, which cured most problems with the active battlefield mod for me. It was in the MissionControl.ini, but TK already set it to the number I used, when he brought out the Expansion Pack. I haven't experimented to see if it can be set higher. The number is the MaxEventLog=, which right now TK has set at 8192, which is what I used. Heck

Interesting idea, Capun. How high is high? Is it directly tied to the 3d model? ie: Does the viewport have to be within the min and max extant positions listed in the data ini, or can it be higher? Thinking of some areas of terrain where you might put a medium artillery battery just behind the front, where it could see an enemy battery just on the other side of their lines. Or maybe a nice ammo dump. Just curious. Heck

From what I discovered in trying to do the active battlefield mod, I don't think there's much you can do because of the limitations of the game engine. What I did with that mod was make some of the infantry into static versions, which would engage each other, because they could see each other. And I placed some artillery batteries along the front to give that small barrage effect, or artillery duels. When it comes to bigger artillery, they would have to be very carefully placed so that they could see each other, or the targets they were supposed to engage. This might be difficult because of the undulations of the ground that make this sim's terrain so realistic. That was one of my biggest, most tedious problems in the battlefield mod. I would place units, and then generate single missions to fly near them, only to discover they couldn't see each other. I would often have to crash my plane and then "walk" the camera around to see what the terrain actually looked like from the ground pounder perspective. The other problem I had was battlefield persistance. For this I had to arrange two solutions. I had to give them less accurate weapons in the gundata.ini, and I had to armor them. Otherwise, by the time you flew over, graves registration was already there. You can't, from what little I know, simulate things like trench raids in this sim. And other than the big "pushes," I think the Western Front was relatively quiet during the daytime, from what I've read in books like "Knee Deep in Hell," by John Ellis. Most activities, even trench raids, were carried out under cover of darkness. By 1917 these men knew that in a big push, and there was usually more than one a year, hundreds of thousands were going to be killed, wounded, captured, of just go missing, so there seemed to develope a general live and let be miserable attitude when there was no offensive going on. So, apart from some desultory barrages by Whiz Bangs, or French 75's, and the odd machine gunner trying to keep heads down on the other side, the only activity would be barrages by the big guns, and they would be difficult to simulate here, because the weapons are direct line of sight, and the ground usually prevents that. Oh, does anyone know which ini file controls the size of the debrief log? One of the ini files has a line pertaining to it. I was working at one time to solve the missing stats problem with the battlefield mod, and thought I had a solution, but real life problems interfered, and I lost the damned file. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate the info, so I can post a possible fix. Sorry this post is so long. Heck

Beta: J-35F for WOI/Patch 5
Heck replied to column5's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
By flying the Draken full vertical and then chopping the throttle to idle, I managed to induce a tail slide, which degenerated into an inverted flat spin, which was completely unrecoverable. Two thumbs up. Ps. I've always loved the four vortex generators... Heck -
Shot down by Abrams MBT
Heck replied to JKstar's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I was shot down the other night in an A-4e by two rpg's from Vietnamese Regular infantry that I changed from Ground targeting to Air_And_Ground. Pulling out very, very low over some troops I was stafing, I heard a hit and saw fire in my mirrors, and a second later I took another hit and went into a fatal left spin, so I know they blew my left wing off. Sure enough, when I looked at the log, it said I had been hit by two rpg's and shot down. Don't know if it could happen in real life, but it can happen in the sim if you change the infantry targeting to air_and_ground. You also have to be very, very low in order for them to hit you with their small arms, which I've also had happen. Usually I keep a respectable distance above their tiny little heads, but when I forget, I sometimes get whacked. Heck -
Green Hell for Wings over Vietnam
Heck replied to Stary's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I like it. I don't notice that much lack of detail by changing the bitmaps to 256. I've been playing with CA_Stary's solution in the VietnamSEA_data.ini by changing the AlphaObjectVertexCount= and the AlphaObjectIndexCount= to see what values give me the best compromise between frame rates and amount of detail. For us low end users, it's going to be the best trade we can get between frame rate and amount of detail. If I set the values very low at: AlphaObjectVertexCount=512 AlphaObjectIndexCount=1024 I get smooth as glass frame rates, but large open (green) areas in the jungle areas. It doesn't seem to affect the woodlots, just the large jungle areas. If I set them at: AlphaObjectVertexCount=1024 AlphaObjectIndexCount=2048 I get slightly choppy frame rates over the jungle, but more dense jungle. On a side note, one reason I love this mod is because it makes ground targets harder to target if you've changed the color of your target boxes. I flew so low on my last CAS mission in an A-4E that the little buggers (infantry mod) shot me down by hitting me with two RPG's! Heck PS: After testing on my system: 1.4Mhz, 2Gig ram, 96meg shared video chip, 3058meg virtual memory Here's my best compromise solution: AlphaObjectVertexCount=1536 AlphaObjectIndexCount=1536 All bitmaps 256 Cockpit Reflections off Shadows off Mirrors on Horizon distance normal All other graphic settings high -
Green Hell for Wings over Vietnam
Heck replied to Stary's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Beautiful mod, CA_Stary. Thanks for posting that data.ini fix. I'm now able to run all graphics on high settings if I turn off shadows, cockpit reflections, and use Normal for my terrain distance. I get a very slight hit to frame rates over the large jungle areas, but nothing unacceptable. Oh, I did use one other ancient fix on my low end system (1.4Mhz). I used a paint program I have to reduce the size of Brain32's .bmp's from 512 to 256. Hated to do it, but I had to, because of my system. Don't use YAP, so I can't help with any ideas there. Posting this to say thanks, and offer another idea to people with low end systems like mine. Oh, yeah. If you turn your target boxes back on and make them a deep bluish, or greyish color, it makes them very hard to spot in the jungle areas, but you can pick them up. I use this since the game doesn't have smoke rockets, and I haven't found a way to make ground units emit smoke themselves. -
Has anyone else managed a PIO in WOI?
Heck posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
I was flying an A-4E Ahit on an airbase attack. Being use to hamhocking my aircraft around the sky in the previous versions of this sim, I overdid a roll off of the target when some tracers came in my direction. Milliseconds later I was heading for a dirt nap. Rolled opposite, overdid it again, and was now under a hundred feet, upside down, about to beat it into a plowshare. I endured two more of these rolling PIO's before I finally got it under control, inverted, less than fifty feet, heading for a hill near the target. With a soft negative g push, I stabilized the aircraft, and gently, gently, rolled upright, then pulled up over the top of the hill, calling my wingie to rejoin. As he joined up, I could, in my imagination, hear him say, "Scared the S*** out of yourself. Didn't you lead?" Jerk. It's a whole new world, my friends. Heck -
Real forrests for WoE Nato2 development pics
Heck replied to Stary's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
I was leery of downloading this, since my computer is just a 1.4 Mhz, with a shared video chip (laptop). Decided to try it on a stock install (waiting for the next patch before installing Nato Fighters), feeling it wouldn't work, but knowing I could always remove it again. Blown away! No noticeable reduction in frame rates at all. Amazing! Know that I can't go back to flying the sim without it. Can't wait for your WOV work, as that's my long time favorite version of the sim. Thanks! Heck -
WOI - System requirements... Should I bother?
Heck replied to Rampstrike's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
By all means, buy it. I have an intel 910 shared video chip, which only shows 96 megs of ram in dxdiag, a 1.4 processor, and 2 gigs of system ram. Even with this poor video, I am able to run this sim at most of the highest graphic settings and get only an occaissional slow down in frame rates, even with a lot of modded things that could kill frame rates, like the speech.ini mods that add location and direction calls to the radio calls. Ps: Typhoid, thanks for the great info. Heck -
Modding / Permissions
Heck replied to column5's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
You can count my mod offerings on four fingers of your left hand, and they're all based on other's work, but anyone is free to use them for any purpose, other than payware. I think this is a great idea, as long as no one releases any payware part by accident. I do think the idea of a sticky sign up list is good, because that will track the people who have signed on to this, so we don't run into any modder wars again, especially payware modder wars with their threats of lawyers and such. Each modder who agrees could just leave his name on the sticky, sort of a self sign up. I don't think anyone would need a list of mods, just the modder names, because the list would probably crash the server. -
A quick thank you...
Heck posted a topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
... to all the members of this community. Not only is this a great modding community, where you can find hundreds of items to download, but it's also probably the best teaching community that I've ever encountered in all my years of flight simming. Because of what I found here, I've been able to do things that I never thought I would, including give myself a custom flight helmet. This community has encouraged me to learn and try all sorts of new things, things I always told myself were beyond my capabilities, and for that I say thanks to one and all. Heck -
WW2 Nightfighter Campaign
Heck replied to Tecumseh's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Prop Heads Forum
If you created a new version folder for the Hurricane I, like Hurricane NF, and made that version NIGHT_ONLY, you could have 1 Sqdn fly night missions only, and they would be the only squadron to do it, since they'd be the only ones equipped with a night fighter version of the Hurricane. All the rest of the squadrons would remain day only. And if you make sure your German bombers are DAY_AND_NIGHT, and your German fighters are DAY_ONLY, wouldn't that cure the problem of day fighters escorting the bombers? Just some random thoughts...
