  1. Eduard's Korean War mod works just fine in WOV, I've played it that way myself. Download and install the complete mod found in the files section. If you don't already have it, download and install the SFP1 cat extractor found in the files section here, you'll need it to make one small adjustment. It works on both SFP and WOV. I think the Complete Korean Mod has the terrain in it. If not go here: http://www.majorleesaerodrome.net/ to download a very good version of it. Then, just install all the new files that you have into a copied and pasted version of WOV that's installed into a new folder, such as, Korea. Use the cat extractor to find and extract the SEA.cat file found in your new installation's Objects/Terrain folder. Extract it. Move it to the folder with the Korean terrain in it and rename it Korea.cat. That should do it. I do have two further recommendations, however, based on help I've gotten here at Combat Ace. First, purchase a Valuesoft version of SFP1 for $4.99 from Circuit City, either from one of their stores if you live near one, or online, and use that for all your modded versions of this sim, after patching to the latest version, because it has a greater number of mission types available than WOV, because WOV was designed with American missions over Nam in mind, so the type list is limited. Second, make sure you download and install MK2's excellent Red Falcon Korean war mod, which installs right in the new version you've created, without another separate installation. This mod, like the Korean mod, will work in WOV if you decide not to make the switch. I'll be watching this thread, so send me a mayday if you have any problems. :)
  2. My opinion is stick to historical accuracy. Then again, I don't mind getting shot down, because neither myself, or my virtual pilot, really winds up dead. We can just do it again. I've been hit by very few SAMS, if I take evasive action when I heard, "Sam inbound." My wingmen are another matter, because they seem too dense to get out of the way, so I'm usually watching the SAM trail end at one of them. I wouldn't install ECM because, and my research may not be complete, or accurate, most of the aircraft of this time did not carry ECM, either chaff, or flares. I know that strike 105's could and did carry jammer pods, but one aircraft type couldn't mount another's without modification. I haven't found anything on 104's in Nam carrying pods, chaff, or flares. As I've said, my research may be too limited, or downright incorrect, so if anyone has found better information, please correct me. With the info I have right now, I'd leave it off, and do a lot of SAM dodging.
  3. Moments before this shot was taken, this 143 F-4 still had 4 Sparrows, 2 more Sidewinders, and 6 Mk-82's still hung on it. Hint: I didn't press the bomb release...... God! This sim is fun!
  4. Wow, Caeser! Seems like my little Dragon's Jaw misadventure is mild compared to some of yours. :) And sorry about the "moments before" line, which made my story unclear. I spent some time (don't know how long) climbing from 0 to 4100 feet in full burner trying to figure out how I survived, and which way was least likely to have the heavy AAA. ps, we never did knock down the bridge. Triple A and SAMS got number 3&4, and 2 and I went limping home with our Pukin tails between our legs. Needless to say, I imagine my virtual crew chief wasn't too happy to see me land. I'm certain in real life they would have pushed that old Four over the side...
  5. Answer: I scraped them off. No lie. Here's the sequence of what happened in the sim. Asp 11 (me) was leading a strike on the Dragon's Jaw Bridge in single mission. When two passes didn't drop the damn thing, Asp 11 decided on a very low pull out on his third pass. Too low. Knew I'd just miss the pull out. Got the explosion screen that I've gotten before when I've banged the ground. Expecting the "Guess what, you're dead screen," where you get to watch your wingmen valiantly try to avenge your death. Instead, after a moments pause, I was back in the cockpit. "Shades of USAF!" I thought, thinking somehow I was now Asp 12. But when I checked the call sign, it was me. Dumbfounded, I went to outside view, despite my wingmen's screams of "Sam launch!" and "Sam inbound!" and zoomed in to see what had happened to the bird, which was flying "One Wing Low" to the left. Disbelieving myself, I zoomed in and snapped the screenshot. Yes folks, I scraped them off. I don't know how, but I scraped off 4 Sparrows, 2 Sidewinders, a gun pod, two drop tanks, and a collection of more than six Mk-82's Warning! The technique of scrape bombing is not authorized, or condoned by the virtual USN! The demonstration posted here was performed by a professional virtual F-4 pilot on a closed course, and should not be attempted at home!
  6. Check out the files section here, and also the links provided. Major Lee's Aerodrome is a great site for SF downloads, which will work in WOV, although I believe it's better to own both, because of the greater number of mission types available in SF. Also check out Column5.com for addon planes, and a quick trip to Dueces Strike Fighters Terrain is a must. As someone advised me, pick up a copy of the Valuesoft version of Strike Fighters, which you can find at Circuit City's website, patch it, and you'll have fun with both. All the tutorials you'll need to install things can be found here, and to newbies like us, this site is a godsend. Right now, I have two copies of WOV on my computer (US and VPAF) and two copies of SF (Mid East and Korea). Have fun!
  7. I placed an order for it online with GMX over two weeks ago, and they confirmed it next day, saying they wouldn't bill my card until they shipped, and they'd notify me by email when that happened, but that's the last I've heard from them, despite emailing their customer support two days ago. Does anyone know where else it's available for someone in the states? I don't mind doing a duplicate order, as long as I get it. I need it for the desert cat file. I've gotten many different campaigns and mods to work with my copy of WOV, but I can't get the airfields to work with the Suez and Israel 1.4 terrains, because the airfields seem to be oriented 90 degrees from what they are in WOV. So, I have to start all missions in the air and landing is a hoot, because I can land manually okay, but my wingmen stubbornly land across the runway (90 degrees). I'm afraid they'll chew up their tires doing that. Also, every once in a while, a tanker is docked in the middle of the desert, and I'm sure there are a few other "did I just see that, or is it the desert heat" moments waiting for me out there in the Sinai. If anyone can help me locate the sim, I'd appreciate it. As I've said, I don't mind doing a dupe order in order to get the prized cat file. Thanks
  8. None out there that I know of yet. But, keep watching that download section. Perhaps someone using the mission editor will modify a mission, or two, around that carrier.
  9. Just downloaded and installed following the instructions, now that the plane has been properly documented. Unfortunately, the canoe and strobe don't show up in external view. I use weapons pack 6, so I added the proper lines to both the weaponsdata.ini and the weaponsdata_vietnam.ini found in the pack, but the weapons refuse to show, even though the bitmaps, lods, etc., are all in their proper place. Can anyone help? I don't think I've done anything wrong during the installation, but I'm still a little new to this.
  10. No problem, Rhugouvi. Being a newbie, I make my share of mistakes (read lots of mistakes), but I've come to find here, unlike other forums for other sims, where I've posted and never received any response to my questions, usually I have help here within twenty-four of my asking. And given how active and busy this community is, modding two sims that are a couple of years old, that's a truly phenomenal response time. When I find my own solution to something, even if it's a "doh" moment like this one, I post my solution here in hopes that other newbies might find a solution they're looking for, so the modders have time to do what they do best, and not have to come up with answers to twenty questions from SAM bait like me. Like any newbie here, I appreciate what I'm getting for free. Because when I bought WOV it didn't have: every weapon ever created, it seems flying for "Uncle Ho" the A-5b the RA-5c infantry in CAS missions the Mid East Korea two types of F-104's the ability to take recce photos Mirages, Mirages, Mirages Sabres and Cougars and Panthers, oh My! a flyable Buff??!!! radio chatter taken directly from history etc. The list is really too long to mention! And keeps growing longer every day. I now have four sims on this computer, all different, when I only bought one. So, hopefully, I won't have too many more "duh" moments, so the modders can do they're work. But if I do, I'll still post the answers I find, in hopes that others can benefit from my crash and burn experiences....
  11. Boy, was this a DUH moment. It helps to look for, download, and use, the latest versions of tools like the weapons editor. The old version of the file I was originally using (found elsewhere) was causing all of my headaches. As soon as I downloaded and used the one here.... ..... well, duh..... Ps: Thanks, Capun, for helping even idiots like me :)
  12. I'm really stumped, Capun. As per the readme with this airplane, I changed my weaponsdata.ini's last entry from this: [WeaponData540] TypeName=Tank370_F4C FullName=370-gal DT Cammo ModelName=tank370_f4C Mass=1230.619995 Diameter=0.620000 Length=6.160000 AttachmentType= NationName= StartYear=0 EndYear=0 Availability=0 BaseQuantity=0 Exported=FALSE ExportStartYear=0 ExportAvailability=0 WeaponDataType=5 MaxFuelAmount=1090.910034 Asymmetrical=FALSE to this: [WeaponData540] TypeName=Tank370_F4C FullName=370-gal DT Cammo ModelName=tank370_f4C Mass=1230.619995 Diameter=0.620000 Length=6.160000 AttachmentType= NationName= StartYear=0 EndYear=0 Availability=0 BaseQuantity=0 Exported=FALSE ExportStartYear=0 ExportAvailability=0 WeaponDataType=5 MaxFuelAmount=1090.910034 Asymmetrical=FALSE [WeaponData541] TypeName=Canoe FullName=Canoe ModelName=Canoe Mass=720.000000 Diameter=1.000000 Length=4.821000 AttachmentType=USN NationName=USN StartYear=1965 EndYear=2020 Availability=2 BaseQuantity=50 Exported=FALSE ExportStartYear=0 ExportAvailability=0 WeaponDataType=4 JammerType=0 JammerStrength=0.000000 [WeaponData542] TypeName=Strobe FullName=Strobe ModelName=Strobe Mass=100.000000 Diameter=1.000000 Length=4.821000 AttachmentType=USN NationName=USN StartYear=1965 EndYear=2020 Availability=2 BaseQuantity=50 Exported=FALSE ExportStartYear=0 ExportAvailability=0 WeaponDataType=4 JammerType=0 JammerStrength=0.000000 and then save and close it. But when I run the weapons editor and open the weaponsdata.ini, it does not see anything past the F-4C drop tank. The new additions do not show up in the weapons editor, and I can't figure out why. I'm following MK2's instructions on using the weapons editor, which I found in the sticky thread here. The weapons editor sees every other weapon in the .ini except the two that I added. All the files were added to the proper folders, per the readme, and the plane works fine, just not these two weapons. And I can't seem to add them. Any ideas on what I might be screwing up?
  13. There are close air support missions in the single missions. Don't know about in the campaigns, haven't played it enough yet. But, in the single missions, the NVA seems to have tanks, and be met in some battles by US tanks (M48's). You won't see infantry, or enemy positions. The sim deals basically with Rolling Thunder, Linebacker 1 and Linebacker 2, so it's primarily missions over the North. If you're looking for strikes on infantry, hopefully someone will do the infantry mods that I've seen for WW2 in the downloads, just repaint them for Nam. Also, if I remember where I was correctly, and I probably don't, because I wasn't paying close attention, most CAS seems to be along the DMZ, or thereabouts. Sorry I couldn't be more help.
  14. This mod crashed out when I first started to run a campaign. It ran fine in single missions, once I followed the advice found here, and copied the vietnamSEA.cat file into the Korea terrain folder and renamed it Korea.cat. But when I tried my first campaign, ctd. Then, I discovered what the problem was. Neither of the Korea downloads here contains the Mission planning maps. A search of the site didn't produce them, but I finally found them at Major Lee's site. Once I downloaded the terrain files from his site, and installed the maps, I was quickly, and happily, getting my butt shot down over North Korea. Looks just like one of my favorite movies, Bridges at Toko Ri. I could even swear that my wingman looked over at me to say, "You gonna take off now lead, or what?" Great mod, guys. Just posting this in case others have problems...
  15. Is it possible by editing the data ini files to model the mach pitch up, or mach tuck, behavior of the straight wing aircraft of the early fifties, such as the F-84, F-80, etc.? Also, does the limiting mach number really have an effect? I dived my 84 straight down tonight, and at one point in the twenty thousand foot vertical dive I could swear I was at a speed which would have put me through the mach, which was not possible in this aircraft (from what I've read), because of a severe mach induced pitch up at .85, which sometimes broke up the aircraft, if it was flown this fast. I haven't been able to find anything in the ini files that jumps out at me, then again, I'm not capable of modding these myself, so I thought I'd ask. Thanks...
  16. Just returned to flight simming from a long hiatus. Found WOV and decided to try it. Found this site, and decided to try the VPAF Campaign mod. So far, I've just been flight testing in single mission mode, haven't started a campaign for "Uncle Ho" yet, but I have to say that what I've seen so far is S**t Hot, as they used to say. Installation per the read me was super simple. Thanks to all! What a great piece of work! Now, if only I can make "Uncle Ho" proud...
  17. My appreciation to all the members here, modders and posters alike, for their quick response to questions from someone who has no clue what he's doing with all this free stuff. And a special note of thanks to the designers of SF and WOV, whose programming choices made all this possible...
  18. You know, MK, your campaign mods are going to run me out of space on my computer, eventually, because they're all too good to pass up... :)
  19. I just saw the full Korean war mod in the campaign section. I have WOV, not SF. Will this mod work with Wings Over Vietnam? I don't have Strike Fighters, so I don't know if the file structure is the same. Sorry for my lack of expertise. I saw the new announcement for the Communist version of this campaign, and if I need four installs of WOV (USAF/USN, VPAF, Korean war US, and Korean war Russian) then so be it. The mods for this sim are just too good to pass up, if I can use them. Thanks!
  20. Thanks, MK. Going to set it up this weekend. Pepelyaev, here I come! On a side note, got my first VPAF kill on my first mission out, when I downed an A-4 Skyhawk. Uncle Ho likes me! He really likes me!
  21. VPAF is an absolutely awesome mod for Wings Over Vietnam that allows you to fly for the Vietnamese People's Air Force, complete with screens and pilot pictures taken of Vietnamese pilots. You can fly two versions of the Mig 17, the Mig 19, and two versions of the Mig 21. When an F8 Crusader tried to gun me in the traffic pattern at Phuc Yen while trying to land my damaged Mig 17, I knew this add on was going to be a hoot! It's in the campaign download section, and I highly recommend it. You'll have to do a separate install (or just copy, then paste your new copy of WOV to the recommended VPAF directory and install the files. The pilots of both sides were very brave men, and I hope no-one takes my next comment wrong, because the men we (America) sent into North Vietnam were the bravest of the brave to me, but it took a lot of courage for a Vietnamese pilot to climb into the cockpit of a Mig 21, knowing that he was physically too small for the ejection seat, and it would break either his back, or his neck, if he tried to use it. That too, required a special kind of courage... Spent last night on a search of the local bargain bins for it. No joy. I'll have to order it online. There are just too many good mods for both these sims.
  22. Thanks, Buff. The read me said I couldn't, but I'll do another install of WOV and give it a try.
  23. Just bought, installed, and patched WOV (version 7). I've flown a number of aircraft in single missions and campaign missions, but I find the A-7a, or b, almost impossible to fly in a loaded condition, no matter how I reduce the bombload. And my ai wingmen tend to become flaming lawn darts as soon as they're airborne. I know these two aircraft were considered underpowered, but I've never read of them being downright dangerous, as they're modelled here. The A-4 (which had lower installed power) handles like a dream by comparison. I've downloaded the A-7e from Column5, and, other than being a framerate killer in external view, it flies completely differently. Does anyone know of a fix for this? Or, can anyone tell me what to adjust in the extracted A-7a/b ini to fix it? Thanks.
