  1. Hacking Passenger Jets?

Tower closures don't work like that. We do non tower ops all the time...and none it has to do with the ACARS system. FC
  2. Hacking Passenger Jets?

Actually, I just read the article a few minutes before you posted it. The problem is that the article is too vague...it talks about supposed threats to the ACARS system (which we do use) and the FMS. In our aircraft, the ACARS gets information from the FMS, but doesn't give information TO the FMS. The FMS is what controls navigation in modern aircraft...think of it as your computer you program to tell you where the aircraft should go. The FMS of most modern aircraft (as far as I know) use GPS, INS, and available NAVAIDS (VOR/DME, TACAN, ILS, etc) to come up with a 'blended' solution as to where the aircraft thinks it is and where it thinks it's going. Again, the ACARS in our aircraft (A300/A310) does not send any of this information to the FMS...so it has no influence on it (again, as far as I know). Now, the best way to think of ACARS is as a cheap ass cell phone that can send and receive texts, and record information to send to the company...a terminal for a mini 'black box' as it were. You could, in theory, maybe, send a spoofer text to the aircraft. But I have no idea how secure the ACARS link is. And if you sent a text to do something weird, I'm pretty sure the first thing the pilots will say is 'WTF?' and call the company to get confirmation. Again, as far as I know, there is no way for the ACARS to directly affect the FMS, INS, GPS, etc in any way, shape, or form. It's an interesting article, but it simply does not give enough information to make a determination as to the validity of the threat. FC
  3. I have an A-10A MAX model from way back when. I seem to remember it needed some work (I think it was wpnsgts model...) FC
  4. Jet Thunder silently buried?

Unfortunately, this kinda shows a point I've been trying to make for a while: Coding air combat sims that use AI, electronic warfare, and missiles (basically, most stuff post Korean War) is not easy, takes more time and costs more than you think. The only 2 consumer products that I know that address this (air combat, AI, electronic warfare, missiles) at all (other than pure arcade products like Ace Combat) are DCS and TW. Everything else is either civilian (MSFS and its ilk), pre-missiles (IL2 and its derivatives, War Thunder, etc), multiplayer only (TacPack for MSFS - drones that don't fight are NOT combat AI), or hobbies (Falcon, EECH, Janes F-18, TAW, etc). Unless someone knows something I don't, that's all there is...which is disheartening to say the least. FC
  5. NK in state of war with the South?

Plus, I like my Samsung phones and Kia cars! :) FC
  6. War is very serious business....

No I hadn't...that's hysterical! Bummer that some folks got in trouble for it. I remember the days where on your last bomber flight you reached the GNP (Get Naked Point) and tradition was to do most of the flight in your birthday suit. One guy had to go to the tanker on his last flight, so he had taken one of his old flight suits and cut it in half, so he could wear the upper part while on the tanker...thus 'technically' not be clothed. Yea, I suspect nobody does that anymore in this day of cameras everywhere... FC
  7. Take your time. We all get that way sometimes...real life has a way of doing that. FC
  8. This is quite possible...intended tone can be problematic even between people who speak the same language when it comes to text. We still aren't quite at the 'Star Trek' level of translation software. Let's everyone take a step back. FC
  9. Dude, what did you expect was going to happen? Anytime you make changes to the system folders (the main install), especially something like adding a new exe, the first time you run it, that is EXACTLY what happens. Several times we warn to move or copy your mod folders, run the sim, then put your folders back. I make duplicates of my mod folders, then run the new exes, clean up the created mod folders, then copy my mod folders back. Keep the copies until I've run and verified the new mod folders work how I expected. FC
  10. Everybody hates me

    That ain't right! FC
  11. Well, you need 3ds MAX 7, 9 or 2009 (32-bit), and the appropriate Thirdwire exporter (available at Thirdwire). FC
  12. Okay, written as parody to call attention to PETA's causes. FC
  13. Modifications were specified in the referenced thread. I did not try this in SF2. The main reason is because the AI did not attempt to use the missiles in SF1. I VERY seriously doubt TK would have added coding to make the AI shoot missiles backwards. FC
  14. I have the iOS version on the iPad 2 and the Android version on the HP Touchpad running ICS. From what I can tell, the aircraft seem to look the same. FC
  15. And if you want MIDI music from Strike Commander... http://www.laurasmidiheaven.com/0vg/PC-StrikeCommander.shtml FC
  16. I'd like to get it done...just trying to find the motivation. Also, I'm starting my spool up to get requalified, so I'm probably going to be out of pocket for a few weeks until I'm back on the line and life has completely returned to the new normal. FC
  17. The iOS and Android versions play exactly the same. You can get aircraft by either buying them or earning keys to unlock them by playing the game. Simple as that. FC

  20. Heh, we stopped using that reference 10 years ago when the grey paint scheme debuted.... You must be old. FC
  21. There has been another update to Strike Fighters Android released in the last day or so. Now, this is all speculation, however, considering that in order to save money, TK tends to recycle assets, a couple of interesting things have shown up in SFA that lead me to believe you will see them on the PC. First, one of the things I mentioned was the F-16A in USAF colors showing up in SFA. Makes perfect sense...take the SF2I Netz and reskin it. However, the newest update reveals an additional F-16A variant...the F-16A MSIP. It appears to have the correct Block 15 tailplanes and an additional pitot tube on the vertical stab. So, obviously it is a new model. Making a new model (or at least modifying an existing one) seems like a lot of work just to limit to a 'Freemium' mobile game. My speculation is the either as a DLC, or as part of Exp3, you will see 2 variants of the USAF version of the F-16A, the earlier basic Block 1/5/10, and the later Block 15. Changes (besides the external differences noted) would probably include the chin hardpoints, and overall greater weapons capacity. I'm not sure if the ADF variant would be modeled. For us, here, it doesn't mean much since we already have the excellent Vipers available for download. But it gives a clue as to what is being worked on for the next PC release. I am curious as to certain omissions in the SFA lineup...no Israel birds for instance, no A-4 or Harrier for that matter either. Considering these are flyables in the SF2 series, it's odd that they aren't in SFA. FC
  22. Meteor explodes over Russia, hundreds reported injured

I'm just glad to hear (so far) that it didn't kill anyone. FC
  23. Live Coverage of Asteroid passing.

    Good one! FC
  24. the Iranian threat...........

Some folks need to have a clarification of what is and is not allowed here. First, in general, in western countries, you can pretty much say what you want, where you want, how you want. There are some limitations, the best examples are things like bomb threats, or yelling fire in crowded theater, things like that. You can start websites focused on your own hate speech if you like. On privately owned websites, there may be more limitations...there is no 'Freedom Of Speech' on a private website. Now, here at CombatAce, we do have some limitations. One of the biggest is no personal attacks on fellow members, and especially no slurs based on ethnicity, religion, nationality and sexual orientation, period...no matter who they are aimed at. Example...calling Kim Jong-un (leader of North Korea) a 'gook' is a banning offense. Calling him an 'idiot' is not necessarily a banning offense. However, moderators have leeway to discipline members that may be following the restrictions literally, but not the intent. If I say "What you believe in is idiotic, what you have posted actually made me dumber, and your government couldn't legislate its way out of a paper bag." may be following the rules, but probably is not following the intent of the restrictions we have here at CombatAce. Depending on the judgment of the moderating staff, posts may be altered, removed, threads deleted or moved into 'The Arena' (where there is more leeway), and/or members temporarily or permanently banned. 25. Dassault nEUROn

I just happened upon this thread. Keep it to a dull roar please...no need to be throwing out ethnic slurs around here. FC
