  1. Ouch!! Talk about leaving a mark... My dad used to work on F-104s...they had to put gloves on the wings because guys were getting cut, sometimes badly, around them. Planes are can be dangerous even sitting still with no power... FastCargo-HWG
  2. It ain't over til it's over...I'm not jumping on the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray thing until it no kidding settles out...or someone makes a drive that plays and writes to both, as well as older DVD tech. FastCargo-HWG
  3. Nice work...very nice work. She sure is pretty... And jklv, don't make me come over there and smack you.... FastCargo
  4. Actually, if you put your HUD settings on 'Hard' I think that'll do it. Padlock and target keys still work even in hard mode (so to speak). FastCargo
  5. What Do You Look Like in Uniform Thread

At the start of my flying career - so young, so naive... Ah, to be young and single... One of the best days of my life... Boy, they got some new toys since I started... 2 years ago at the Randolph AFB airshow after doing the flyby with the wife and munchkin: FastCargo

  11. Your thoughts

Eraser, Are you kidding me? You really don't know much about the military do you? First, serving in the military is about serving your country, not serving a particular leader. Now, there may be other, secondary reasons to join up, but that is the primary reason. Period. What that also means is that it does not matter WHICH service you are in...there is a high probability, at some places more than others, that someone will be trying to throw nasty, pointy things at you. Let's talk about the USAF for a minute. Do you know what an ALO is? It means Air Liaison Officer. Know what that is? It's a pilot, usually a bomber or fighter pilot, who acts as a liaison between the USAF and the ground forces (usually Army or Marine). Not at the command level...at the ground level. Yep, a pilot, who the USAF has spent over a million dollars in training on, is in his BDUs, with his backpack, holding his M-16, with his range finder, laser marker, and radio, to coordinate CAS if his squad he's assigned to needs it. This isn't some -once in a blue moon- type thing...a LOT of guys rotate through the assignment, jumping out of planes instead of flying them, through the muck with the ruck. Or how about security forces? Do you know how many deployed ops locations have USAF SFs? A hell of a lot of them...again, supposedly the 'easy' service has those guys in the tents, in the sand, with the ruck in the muck. In the Navy? How about the Seebees? Oh wait, those are the guys who usually have to BUILD those bases in the sand... There is NO such thing as a 'safe' service... As the services do more and more joint operations, non-traditional augmentations have popped up everywhere. The military is more and more mobile, which means more and more people are in the thick who weren't before. This started as a trend back in the post-cold war era, as the cuts of the 90s took hold. And who was in charge at that time? So, bottom line? Hey, if you can't serve because of personal reasons...medical, life, or just weren't interested in general, hey, that's okay. It is a volunteer force after all. But to say that you'll only serve if you can avoid a conflict, or because of a particular leader? It never, EVER works that way. The person who thinks he can join up and NOT have a significant probability of getting shot at is naive in the extreme. Don't believe me? Ask the guys in the Balkans,at Khobar Towers, on the USS Cole...all incidents that happened under a Democratic president during a time of 'peaceful economic growth'. Don't put up a 'I'd serve, but I don't like...' and think it gives you moral eqivalency. It doesn't. FastCargo
  12. So what's going on here...

Alright, alright before this thread gets TOO wierd...here's what it is (from another viewpoint and a few years ago): It's called the AETC Composite Flyby. It's done at Randolph AFB (the 12th Flying Training Wing) and is usually done for POW/MIA, Freedom Flyer, and for the local airshow either at Lackland or Randolph AFB (which is this weekend for all you local TX boys). It consists of 2x T-6 Texan IIs, 2x T-38Cs, 1x T-1A Jayhawk, and 1x T-43 (the 737 you see in the picture). It used to be 6 different aircraft, not 4. The older picture you see has a T-37 as well, plus a AT-38B in place of one of the T-38Cs. However, the T-37 is gone, and the T-38s are now all C models. But the IFF squadrons paint theirs in a different scheme (what you see in the picture) than what mine are painted. The first 2 pictures from the thread are the perspective of the person in the back seat of the right hand T-38C. The first picture shows 'route' or a 'relaxed' formation, the second shows the closer 'fingertip' formation used for the flyby. What was going on was that it was a practice for the flyby that is this weekend. Also, several people in the formation were getting 'qualified' to fly it. I was checking out the guy in the front seat...you can't fly the formation unless you are either a) checked out in it or b) with a person who is checked out in it. The situation was though is that we had great pictures for the front seater in the T-38 to use as references on the T-43. However, there were no pictures of the back seat references. So I got permission from the OG to take a camera onboard to take some pictures for the back seater to use as references. Things like 'put the right hand position light on the emergency exit window' makes a good fore/aft up/down reference. Things like this are important because everyone needs to be on the same page so the formation looks good. As an example, the T-6 you see there (the second picture in the thread) even in the 'fingertip' position seems aft. This was confirmed by our ground observer on the first pass. This is where the T-6 guys get together to make sure both crews are looking at the exact same references. So even if both are out of position, it still looks symmetrical. Also, for you aero guys, it's a nice contrasting picture to show the differences of AOA at a specific airspeed for 2 very different aircraft. The T-1 and T-43 have a wide range of airspeed due to their swept wings and large camber. However, the T-6 is straight winged, and has a large prop. From what I've been told by those guys, the T-6 is prop limited. It'll run up to 250 kts, then hits a wall. But it's got power to spare below that...in fact, the T-6 demo team can do a 'snowman' (a double loop in the vertical)...which the old jet powered T-37 couldn't even attempt! The T-38 on the other hand is swept, but has no camber to speak of, no LERX, not even leading edge slats. Almost all it's lift is based on pure AOA, and that's evident at anything below 300 knots. Anything less than about 210 knots is uncomfortable without flaps...but even above that, the nose won't track at all if you reef on the stick to the stops...it'll pretty much just do a 'mini-cobra' and then fall out of the sky because you just blew 50 knots in 2 seconds if you don't back off the pull. Anyway, those shots were at 230 KIAS...so you can see the T-6 is pedaling as fast as he can...while the T-38 is hanging on the blades... Fun stuff. Not as fun as other stuff I've done...but hey, it's different from trying to teach a student to land this thing for the umpteenth time... FastCargo
  13. I'd have to agree with Sag on this one...even if the engine catastropically failed, the aircraft wouldn't pitch down so abruptly. In fact, it would pitch up as the pilot tried to gain enough altitude to punch out with some buffer. I wouldn't draw ANY conclusions this early in the accident. FastCargo

  16. Dude, I think no one answered because you weren't very specific in what ini tweaks are you refering to. Also, I think people are still evaluating what can and can't be done with the new expansion as far as tweaking goes...so people are leery of answering. FastCargo
  17. Nothing against SimHQ...however, a lot of the modders tend to hang out here, so I think this might be the better place to air an issue. As far as the errors in the Korean Air campaign, a new one is being worked on, but it's not out yet. Seems like you've determined the problems already...do you have any questions on how to fix it? Maybe due to the reorg the dates got revised? We did a bunch of reorganization, so maybe that's it? FastCargo
  20. There is no 'history' here that you need concern yourself with. The YAP team prefers to handle issues through direct email communication, so we tend to defer to them for specific technical and gameplay issues with Yankee Air Pirate. Also, not everyone has YAP or all the modules, so there may not be help available here for a specific mission. FastCargo

Airman of the Year? Only if the USAF has exhausted all other options... Nice guess though. FastCargo

  23. Though I understand your good intentions here, I don't think this would really help at all. Besides the initial cost of 3ds Max (unless you get it at a student discount or something like that), the biggest cost in making 3d models to use in game is TIME. Every modder, including those on payware products, will still tell you that it's mostly an inherent interest in the particular product they are modding that is the primary motivation to get it done and get it done properly. Now, I think money for product helps (fulfilling a contract) and can of course provide additional income for other interests. But the downside of such an arrangement is now a binding contract and expectations to live up to. Which can be problematic if you run into snags...because you are still expected to 'get the job done', which is fair. It can actually restrict your freedom as a modder, both in opening up to criticism (justified or not) and time pressures if RL intrudes. For those who mod for free, the time and quality restrictions are mostly self induced, and can be adjusted as RL changes. Offering money sounds like a great idea in theory, but just how much would be enough? I can tell you no amount of money this community could provide replaces the time I spend with my wife and son (soon to be sons plural). Hey, I'm happy to work on a project at FL360 from MEM to YVR in the middle of the night...I'm getting paid anyway, I'm away from my family, and I gotta do something to keep awake. But when I'm at home, playing with my son, modding ain't going to happen...period. And I would be leery to accept cash for a product, no matter if the final intent was to keep it free. Any person with any sort of conscience would automatically create that pressure to get it done because, hey, someone did pay for it...even if it's a 'gift' donation. I frankly don't want the pressure. I like my freedom right now to walk away and say FOAD if I want to and have no guilt. I like that I can pick and choose what I want to work on, when I want to work on it, and how fast or how slow I want to progress on it. And if it sucks, well, I can say 'Too f*****n bad...fix it yourself!'. Now, realize that I don't want it to come to that...I want my work to continue to improve and to contribute in general to the community. In general, I do enjoy tinkering, and it's been fun adding stuff to the sim to expand it. I look forward to my first ground object, my first aircraft, my first single mission, etc... But sometimes, there are just going to be aircraft, theatres, objects, that simply won't be provided because the 3 conditions to make one (ability, motivation, and time) don't or won't exist. At that point, the best you can do is live with it. As far as what I would pay for an addon? Mainly, better terrains. Better FM/AI. That's pretty much it. I don't need clickable cockpits or nth degree detailing... FastCargo
