Trying out FE2 for the second time
FastCargo replied to quack74's topic in Thirdwire - First Eagles 1&2
Also, if you're using DX9, you may be able to use the enbseries dx9 mod. It's been found to speed up frame rates, while giving some graphical enhancements such as HDR and DOF: FC -
Yea...I have many Vietnamese friends here who would strongly disagree with that statement. For that matter, as an ethnic Korean, I will quite happily keep South Korea separate from North Korea if "their finest hour" is defined as the same thing. FC

Waaaay too broad of a question. You have to remember that war is simply the use of force to achieve political objectives. So to win a war, you have to consider the political objectives of both sides. Also, air power is very rarely used in a vacuum. Air power can be used for strategic objectives (infrastructure) or tactical objectives (tanks, troops, etc). How air power is used to achieve those objectives, and how relevant those objectives are to the overall situation will determine how effective air power is overall in the conflict. For instance, it can be argued that for the Pacific part of WWII and for Desert Storm, air power was an essential part of the strategy that achieved the overall political objective in a relatively timely manner. However, Vietnam and Korea were examples of air power being less decisive, partially because the political objectives were significantly different. In my opinion, the only way air power by itself could decisively win a war is if your objective is utter destruction...genocidally wiping a specific piece of territory clean of anyone who lives there through the use of air-deliverable weapons. Any other objective, then it becomes a matter of 'it depends'. FC

Now, THAT would be funny as hell... "Congratulations dumb ass! For trying to be sneaky, you are awarded a virus! Welcome to the internet!" It just keeps getting better, every time I hear it. FC

Anyone get Janes F-15 to run in High-Res?
FastCargo replied to Rodster's topic in General Flight Sim Discussion
Only thing I did for application specific override was pick the screen res that matched my aspect ratio and clicked 'Try High Res'. Oh, and I very specifically am NOT running in Compability Mode...I've noticed for Win98/95 games that it actually will restrict was Glidewrapper can do... That's pretty much it. FC -

Brand new SFI2 issues(compatability?)
FastCargo replied to Streakfalcon's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 2 Series - General Discussion
For the STOCK game: The game only activates bump mapping with Object detail set to 'Unlimited'. It uses DX10 shaders all the time though...you need to add the shader lines. It won't use DX9 unless A) Your video card can't do DX10 or B) You force DX9 in the options.ini file or C) You are on WinXP. The biggest jump I had in frame rates for DX10 was to set Shadows to 'low'. And this was with a NVidia 8600GT at 1440x900. One other thing you can do to get the bump mapping without overloading your video card memory with 3rd party aircraft, is to extract the FLIGHTENGINE.INI file and place it in your mod directory in the Flight folder. Then go into it and edit this section: This way, if you set something to Unlimited, you can still tweak it to get the results you want...for instance, the MaxTextureRes line can be adjusted to limit the size of the bitmaps for textures (I set mine to 2048). That diagram depicts the XF-103, which by that point had evolved into a test airframe only for testing the radar and AIM-47 missile to be later used in the F-108. My F-103 is to be based on the original proposed short range interceptor version, with the AIM-4s and FFARs. FC -
Gnat landing gear ?
FastCargo replied to Crusader's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
MJ, Try commenting out the ModelNodeName and InsideNodeName parameters, and set the HideGearNode parameter to FALSE. Should be located under each landing gear entry. FC -
It says right on the requirements that it runs on XP. You can't get any clearer than that. Now, you won't get the DX10 effects available in Vista or Win7 (specifically, HDR and bump mapping), but it will run in XP just fine. ThirdWire did not say it ONLY runs on Vista or Win7. What they said is that it was made to be able to be run on Vista and Win7...additive, not restrictive. It's not very responsible to post about having a problem without seeing if you have a problem first! FC
-
Have you actually TRIED it? Because plenty of folks have other SF2 based sims running on XP just fine. In fact, it says right on the requirements that it will run in XP. FC

Help on Zoom setting
FastCargo replied to ravenclaw_007's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - Mods/Skinning Discussion
Try commenting out all the MaxExtentPosition and MinExtentPosition numbers and see what happens. As an alternative, put the sim on pause, and then use the Free Camera to zoom in. FC -
Dels Korean War mod AVAILABILITY on First Gen. Series?
FastCargo replied to Kulbit80's topic in Thirdwire: Strike Fighters 1 Series - General Discussion
Before anyone gets optimistic about back porting to Gen 1, a few notes of caution: 1) We don't know how reliable back porting some of the models will be. There have already been issues with folks attempting to use the new LODs (with bump mapping) in any SF2 install not patched to at least the Feb 2010 level. Even those same models without bump mapping were causing CTDs. I cannot confirm if either of those models will work in the Gen 1 series at all. 2) In all likelihood, the Suez addon that TK is making will have been out for a bit before the KAW mod is released. With that addon, will be new FMs for prop and straight wing aircraft. I will tell you we will more than likely be cribbing from those FMs for some of the KAW mod aircraft. There is no guarantee those FMs will work with Gen 1 sims. 3) Some of the AI parameters that are used by the KAW aircraft simply do not exist in the Gen 1 series...which could cause problems for the AI in the Gen 1 series.
